Has anyone here taken a GI club and had it bent strong to a 2 iron loft? Similar to what Tiger has done with the VR_S Forged 3 iron bent to 18*?

I was thinking of doing this myself with possible 3-iron candidates being: TM R11, Titleist AP1, Nike VR_S Forged, Callaway Razr X Tour,......... something GI, but without a ton of offset. Please feel free to offer up other suggestions as well.

I'm doing that right now.  I put together a Nike VR Pro Combo 2 iron with a Project X 6.5 to give me a little more launch and forgiveness than my VR Pro Blades.  I've always been a long iron hitter.  In high school, I played a 12.5 degree driving iron, then 1-pw.  I went away from the 2 iron for a while to try several 5 woods and hybrids.  I just never hit them consistently.  I do put a hybrid in the bag some days, but mostly I play the 2 iron.  I'm left handed so I won't be able to hit the VR_S, but it's hard to imagine a long iron being any more forgiving than the VR PC 2 iron with the channel back without being too bulky and having a lot of offset.

I recently picked up a 2-iron that matches the Titleist DCI 990 set I've used for ten years. Honestly, I can't see how it's any less "forgiving" than any other low-lofted club. Compared to a hybrid you'll be a little more limited in what lies you want to use it from and compared to a cavity-back 3-iron or 4-iron it goes a lot, lot lower. But the four times I've actually used it on a shot in a stipulated round of golf I've hit three good shots and one not very good one, which is about my same ratio as any other iron in my bag.

The really good shots in each case were hitting into the wind on wide-open long Par 5 (once) or long Par 4's (twice). Just as you'd think the ball stayed about 10 feet off the ground, bored through the wind and rolled out 20, 30 yards after it got on the ground. Compared to just swinging away with a 5-iron or launching a fairway wood or hybrid way up into the wind and hoping you judge the windage correctly it was a very safe shot.

The one really bad shot was thinned. It just didn't get off the ground and rolled forward 80-90 yards so no harm done, I just had to hit another mid-iron shot to reach the green.

But I only use it as a specialty club, once every few rounds maybe. I carry an 18-degree fairway and 24-degree hybrid that I'd just as soon use when wind isn't a factor. But it fun having a club that you absolutely know will stay really low and go pretty straight even in a stiff crosswind or headwind. Makes a good 13th or 14th club for those of use who normally don't carry a full set anyway.

There were some applicable suggestions in this thread from yesterday:

http://www.golfwrx.c...ron-need-ideas/

I'd say any Callaway X-Series 3-iron would be a good candidate, or one of those Mizuno Hi Fli or B'Stone Airmuscle iron-type hybrids with 18 degs of loft.

Titleist 712 AP2 3-iron, bent to 19*

I hate hybrids.

Wow.

The 990s are great...but there are irons out there now that have MUCH more forgiving long irons than the 990s.

Even in the "player's iron" category.

Yeah, those 990s were some of the most unforgiving irons I've ever hit.  My VR Pro blades are much easier to hit.  Actually, when I got rid of the 990s, I switched to the 690mbs and they were easier to hit.

I dunno. Those DCI 990's seem pretty darned forgiving since my recent switch to 1951 Macgregor "Jimmy Demaret" blades!

But my point was, the 990's are not exactly SGI models yet I find their 2-iron works about as well any the other long irons in the set. So given that, I'd think the OP's idea of doing it with a Razr X Tour or something ought to work out just fine. Although I guess those modern irons don't have 2-irons and you'd have to just bend down a 3-iron.

Just don't ask me to try to carry 150 yards of water off a downslope with a DCI 990 long iron...that's what they make hybrids for.

I have a Ping i5 2 iron that I put in when the Texas wind really picks up. Considering it's a 2 iron, it's pretty forgiving without being too bulky.

A friend of mine has carried for years a Ping Eye 2 1-iron and that thing is money off a tee. He never hits it from the fairway, as far as I can recall, but anywhere he doesn't want or need to tee off with driver he drops all the way down to that 1-iron and just stripes it dead straight and about 200 yards.

The Mizuno MP Fli Hi is a great choice. You could check out the RBZ line and it's "3 iron" which is stronger than some 2 irons @ 17.5*. One iron that I found pretty good that I picked up pretty cheap was the Nike VR Forged Split Cavity 2 iron. Felt good, easy to hit, and I got mine cheap on ebay.

I called Ping today trying to get a I-20 in a 2 iron with no luck at all.
I may try to find a I-5 in a 2 iron.
The problem I have with the hybrids is always direction not distance.
The 2 iron offers less distance forgiveness but I can always hit it straight. The crooked hybrid has killed a many of good rounds for me but a mishit 2 iron hardley ever kills my rounds.

The Callaway X-20 Tour series offered a 2 iron.  I was checking on a 2 for the X-22 series and was told that series did not have a 2 iron.

I guess the Bridgestone Airmuscle and Mizuno Fli-Hi would fit the category.

This past weekend I removed a 19 deg hybrid and added a Ping Eye 2-2iron.  Best decision i've ever made.  I believe it's 18 or 18.5 deg.

Forgiving? Hmmmmmm, Ping. As said all you need to know. Especially Eye2s and I5s. I carry an I 5. Wouldn't leave home without it. If you want new ask Ping to make a 3 iron 19.5 or 20 degrees. That comes close. The Eye2s, I think, and the I 5 for sure are 18.5. Good luck

I play MP-62 3-P. One day I was putzing around in the PGA Store and noticed a near mint MP-60 2 iron on the clearance rack. $12 plus a quick reshaft, and I had a near perfect match to my set. I couldn't love another club more off the tee on windy days. Keep an eye out, every once in a while you can find a hidden gem for cheap.

I dont think any 2 iron is really forgiving, thats why i game a cavity back that suits my eye, being a Ping S56
Soft as forged when you flush her, terrible feel on mishits IMO but thats really with any club. SW at D1 is waaaay too light, throw on some lead tape and your good to go

The Ping Eye 2 is probably the most forgiving long iron you're going to find.  I typically carry an Eye 2 3i or 2i depending on the course and conditions.

Another option is the Bridgestone AirMuscle.  Also have one of those in 2i, great club.

I've got an Eye 2+ 2 iron that I hit fairly well.  I was considering getting some hybrid for it and my 3 iron but after reading this thread, I may stick with my Eye 2s. Hmmm

I have a Ping Zing2 2-iron (18.5°), which I love. I have it in the bag about ten times or so per year. It must be the second ugliest club ever made, right behind the Cleveland VAS irons, but it is very easy to hit.

Older Nike Pro Combo OS Forged work well.  I sometimes bag the 2i and 3i when course and course conditions dictate so.  PING Eye2 long irons are also a great option to achieve that low piercing ball flight.

I've got a Ping Zing 2  2 iron too. With the ZZ lite shaft. 210 to 215 yards, right down the middle. Haven't had it in my bag since Hybrids hit the scene but I might re-grip it and get it back out there. I know I used to love it.
