hey guys this is my first post!!!!!!!!   first I want to apologize if i posted this in the wrong section but i don't know where to put it.

I am a scratch golfer, with an average driver swing speed of 114 mph. I can also bump it up over 120 if i try but thats not my average, I also hit the ball consistently over 290 yards so its not really a difference in yardage but sounds. I was at bay hill and noticed all of the pga tour pros that are hitting the R11 driver that is the same as mine, made a lower pitch sound. When I hit the ball of the tee it makes a loud *PING* and when they hit it it almost sounds like a lower pitched smash sound. I have the same swing speed as the pro's, and hit the sweet spot in the center of the club 95% of the time.

Is it something different that they are doing or is it just the fact that I'm 20 feet away from them hitting so the initial sound doesn't sound the same to me.

My equipment:

Taylor made R11
adila rip bate 65gram extra stiff shaft
proV1 golf ball.

Hot melt?

Yep. Hot melt dampens the sound making the usual higher pitched sound lower pitched. You can also you cotton balls to get the same effect if I'm not mistaken. I would imagine that would also be pretty easy to do with an r11.

Wow I have never heard of that but just watched a youtube video about it. I am looking to turn pro this year and go for the NGA tour, so I am getting all my equipment fit properly this week, I was just wondering why theres sounded so different even though it was the same swing speed and same head.

and if anyone knows anywhere in orlando that is the best for club fitting shoot me a PM with it. wouldn't mind some hot melt too but if it doesn't actually matter I can live without it.

Yeah hot melt. Its amazing how different they sound.  Even at a much higher swingspeed.

Would love to know what kind of glue/gun they use. I've experimented before with cotton balls and found it didnt work that great at least in the older clubs I tried it in. Not sure why it was such a big secret.

It's rat glue.

Cotton balls work fine.  I have about 10 in my 910D3 and it changed the sound a good bit.

Really average swing speed if 114!?!?  I am not short by any means but if you are not a tour player I think average is 95 if that if you pool all the rec golfers (AMs).

Are they actually drilling holes into the heads or is there a spot on the R11 that you can get access?

Then leads to my next question if there is a hole in the R11 how would they HM say the new Cleveland Classic? Hosel?

He's not saying he has an "average" swing speed compared to the rest of golfers. He's saying 114 is HIS average SS.

Cottonballs don't weigh much by themselves but 10 of them will add a swing weight point or two. I'm sure if you search the clubmaker thread you will see how many makes up what.

You can also use yarn. Yarn can be easier to remove with a small enough tool to grab it.

There's a clip on Secret in the Dirt  where Steve Elkington has his TM driver hot-melted as he can't stand the sound, he actually indicated it would make a go a little bit crazy if he had to play a un-hot-melted one . I'd wish OEM's would mute more drivers but I know they've done studies were the average consumers believes 'the louder, the longer.'

I had a driver years ago, it was so loud my sinuses vibrated when I hit the darn thing. It actually made me feel ill. Give me a thwack any day over that tinny ding!

This was my experience with the FT5. Loved Callaway drivers - still do. But I took about three hits with that thing and actually noticed a ringing in my ears.

RBZ isnt terrible but if it were a little quieter I wouldnt complain.

I love the sound of a loud piercing smashed drive nutted......but hey, different strokes I guess.(I hate it when I have to rat glue or add lead tape then deal with the low thump, I digress!)

You should re-read what he wrote. He is talking about HIS swing speed.

Never heard a Honma driver but the Nike/Callaway square drivers are terrible too.

I thought I heard you remove the toe/heel weights and put them through those holes..

Where can you get hotmelting done at? I assume Joe Kwok does it.

You just tear off a little piece at time and stuff it through the weight ports with something thin that will go through.  Takes a couple hours though..

I added yarn to my 910 and it dampened the sound.  Much better in my opinion.

What about the rubber O-rings on the weights method?  I think it was Joe Kwok that introduced the idea to dampen the sound a bit.  I have them on my R11S and for me, it made a bit of difference on the sound upon impact.

Any reputable club maker should be able to do it. There are places on every head. Either a weight port or the hosel.

Hot melt, cotton balls.
Not to mention none of them play the R11.  Most of them play the R11 DOT which is a prototype head that is very different than your retail R11.

Probably using one of those Bel Radar measurement toys.  Never seen one read anywhere near the actual SS.  Usually 10-15% high---they have never made one that reads low---helps sales...

I don't know where he gets 114 mph is pros swing speed----some yes but not the big hitters..
