I find it funny that there is never really much buzz around the putter he uses considering he has been at the top of putting stats for a couple of years. I imagine if he used a "sexier" putter like a Scotty people would be all over it.

How about the fact that both Donald and Furyk were gaming the White Hot XG #7 and both were in the playoff at the last tournament! Pretty crazy.

I believe Luke has a White Hot XG head with extra weight(XG #7H) and a White Ice insert. I wish I could get that putter. Gonna have to wait for the Metal-X or somehow increase the headweight 15 grams on an XG #7...

Funny enough best putter around gets it done with a $100 putter and the vocal majority on here seem top need multiple $300 + flatsticks with twisted plumbers necks and garden shed welding. Go figure

I must admit I want a Scotty, but really when I look at something like this it makes me realise you probably aren't going to putt any better with one. I now want a #7.

.... don't forget to add crooked stamping, girly colored blue paintfill, more cosmetic enhancements than a cast member from Baywatch.

You just kinda feel like Luke could putt with the oldest bullseye putter to be found at Bobby and Benny's Mini-golf and dairy bar and still be lights out. Golf must be just a whole lot more fun when you know you are just gonna make everything from 8 feet in.

The #7 is great. I picked it up for this season, and everything about it has made me a better putter. The alignment on it is better than any putter I've tried, and my putting changes have been a journey of epic proportions :)

The #7 is a great design!  I have a #7 iBlack (which is more compact) and a White Ice version, which is larger but doesn't pick up golf balls with the fangs like the smaller one does.  I don't know which I like better overall.  I like the firmer insert on both of my putters better than the softer insert on the XG.

The only other putters that are tempting me right now are the Metal-X #7 and the Ping Nome.

I think the #7 is one of the best face-balanced putters of all time.  I used to play with a guy that was lights out with his.  If I were a face-balanced putter user, I would definitely consider one.

yeah, i dont think he's using the XG insert, it really sounds like  the firmer, newer white ice insert, which is the same insert as the tour odyssey uses -- if my info is remotely accurate...ha!

I'd love to try the Metal-X #7. Sounds like a nice putter. But... they only make it face-balanced. I wish they would offer a model with some toe hang.

Are all the Metal-X line face balanced?

Only the mallets, not the blades. I have an arc stroke, but putt fine with face balanced putters too. Try one and see how it works for you before reading too much into the whole "toe-hang has to match the stroke" thing.

Luke uses a White Hot XG tour model which is different than the ones in retail.  His insert is white with a black logo unlike the original XG with red logo (softer).

Luke's #7 is bronze finish but it's not the TOUR RETAIL version either.

For the record XG #7's can be had on used racks for $39.  Best putter I've ever used (still got mine in the bag).  I own 2 Scotty Cameron's which are nowhere as good as this Odyssey.  Cameron's never leave my garage.  I honestly don't know why I own them.

There is something about the insert in Odyssey putter that allow the ball to sit on the face a nanosecond longer delivering more time to judge distance control.  I definitely putt better with a polymer insert.  It "slows down" the green.

At the Bay Hill this weekend Poulter is using a #7 and McDowell has an Odyssey with insert as well.  Stricker (best putter currently on tour) playing an old "used rack" Odyssey too.

(but this goes without saying.  Typically 50% of the field have Odyssey's)

^^^ agree.  I prefer a (mostly) straight stroke path - but I can put with a hang style or mallet.  The more important variable is whether or not I can aim it with my eye.

Donald's putter says White Hot XG #7h on the sole, but it's a bronze looking finish like the white hot tour, and the insert doesn't look like the XG's insert, although i have no idea what insert he has in his.  As far as i know, you can't buy his putter, i've looked, not sure it was ever offered at retail.  i am using the White Ice #7, which i really like, and i agree there is a reason why so many non-Callaway/odyssey staffers use odyssey putters, they just work.

You two have putter envy, or just jealous that you don't have a $300+ custom flatstick?

Its an ugly putter but it works great. I liked the feel of the white ice. Aligning putts is easy with this putter.

I understand what you are trying to say (even though I own a few Scottys), but you can't honestly think Luke Donald's special White Ice only cost $100?

I bought a TP Mills Klassic for a hefty price.  Played it for a few years and putted pretty well with it.  Then last year I was watching Luke Donald with his Odyssey and I had an epiphany to change my bag to more forgiveness in anyway I could.  I replaced my Superdeep with a Wishon 919 at 44.5 inches.  Made plans for the switch from Bridgestone J38cb's to Ping I20's.  The final move was dropping the Klassic for an Odyssey backstryke.  I wish I had tried the exact putter Donald uses, but I went with the backstryke.  Let me say at first I absolutely hated it.  It was very difficult for me to aim.  I was pushing everything right.  I was about to switch back to the Klassic when I decided to shorten it to 33 inches from the stock 35.  I adjusted my stance and next thing you know I am in putter heaven.

So, I would say that Luke Donald's putter choice had a tremendous effect on my entire golf game.

He actually uses a White Hot, and they are that cheap.

I am almost positive that Luke could make anything with any putter, his stroke is sooo smooth.

Yeah I understand. I have seen closeups of it. It looks like a well used regular old White Hot. Ian Poulter also uses one.

Luke's putter has had some work. It is not an off the rack putter. The finish is not retail, it is slightly heavier than standard, possible a different insert, black series grip. Not a standard putter.

Maybe - BUT  - this is the most popular Odyssey putter just behind or tied with the two-ball series.  I remember a few years ago the Nationwide tour was (and may still be) littered with the Odyssey #7.  Luke's putter may be heavier per his spec (you can buy a 355gram bronze model), but maybe not.  Luke is famous for using "off the rack" gear.  You can buy his irons at golfsmith - same loft/length/lie with S300 shafts.

There is no magic to the reason this putter is popular - it just is easy to align.  Something special about the shape and the human eye.  That black and white photo a few posts earlier nails how square it sits.

yeah when I am really struggling I will stand behind the putter and line it up. The long lines makes it so easy.
