The golf of my dreams in Afghanistan

By Josh Knight

GolfWRX Contributor

I am lucky enough to live in a state, South Carolina, where golf can usually be played year round. Although February, the temperature has been surprisingly warm and perfect for a few rounds of golf. Unfortunately, while my buddies are out playing golf weekly, I am sitting in Afghanistan counting the days until my next round can be played.

For the past couple months I have been in Afghanistan deployed as a member of the United States Air Force. At first I didn't really miss all the golf I had played leading up to my departure, but the clock has since seemed to stop moving. A few months of flying in and out of the same places and the mind starts to roam. Of course, I have the internet to check scores and get on GolfWRX, but it doesn't completely fill the void. My wife is nice enough to send me my golf subscriptions when they show up in our mailbox, but they are usually read cover to cover in a day or so. Multiple golf books have arrived, been conquered and stashed away (I finished "Paper Tiger" in less than 2 days). I've got Tiger Woods video game, but you can only drive the ball 400+ yards so many times before it gets old.One thing I do have an abundance of over here is time to think. So, to pass the time I resort to the only golf I remember and play rounds in my head. I am one of those golfers that thinks he can hit all the shots, I just can't put it together on the golf course. I always end up confused on how that "should-of-been-an-80" turned into a 100. Sometimes I replay the good rounds I've shot or maybe just a few holes. I have a few of the local courses memorized enough that I can play a round or two while trying to fall asleep. The game seems so easy at this point, hitting fairways and greens, how difficult could it be and why I am not always playing this good? I even card a bogey from time to time just to keep it realistic. Perhaps an incoming mortar attack disturbs my swing on a par 5, or my roommate starts snoring right as I am about to putt, not the normal golf course distractions but they do get my attention. I'm not going for the course record, just trying to shoot even par for the millionth time in my head.

While I'm playing imaginary golf or reading equipment reviews thinking about all the new clubs I want to buy, I wonder how does everyone else pass the time between the golf seasons? Come next winter I will not have this problem again, but what does everyone else do? How do you not go crazy?

I really hope that all this mental visualization will pay off when I get home next month. I've hit that first tee shot so many times, how can I not find that fairway next month? Usually I am asleep way before No. 18, but with all birdies I card on the front nine who needs to practice the last few. Honestly, I'll probably write down triple digits on that first scorecard, but at least I will be on a golf course.

First off Josh, thank you very much for serving to protect those of us back in the US!  I for one am damned proud of all our men and women who serve in the Armed Forces.  Secondly, nice write-up.  Third, keep you head down and hurry back home to your family.

Stay safe!

Josh, keep your head up and stay safe.  Im in the AF as well and have spent many months over there.  Running through golf shots in my head and replaying previous rounds definitely made the time go by a little easier.

I hope you are home with your family and on a golf course (with grass) before you know it.

Thank you for all that you do.

I'm going to say it again, like those before me, because it isn't said enough.  Thank you for serving our country.  You do more for us than most people know.

I'm sure your first round will go (mostly?) the way you saw it in your dreams.

Thank you for your post, and your service.

Josh, thanks for the write up as it's always great to get some insight from our country's heroes. I hope you have the opportunity to keep us informed the more time continues.
And just sayin', I hope you're not wasting your great imaginary shots on the imaginary practice tee. Keep safe!

Thank you for your service and nice write up .  That's a picture and story worthy of being put in a golf magazine .  I've always wondered what I would do if I was far away from a golf course with out being able to run down to hit a few balls here or there.   Stay safe and before you know it you will be back home and out on the course .

First off Josh thanks for putting your A$ on the line for us. I did 4 tours in "The Sand" with Blackwater. I too use to day dream about my good and bad rounds. Don't worry brother you'll be hitting in the 100's soon enough.

STAY SAFE BROTHER!!

Josh, count me as one of those guys who has spent time in Afghanistan thinking about golf.  I actually shipped a brand new PVD Byron to myself along with a putting green to pass the time between the golf magazines and sites like this.  I was lucky enough to stumble upon a spot between two B huts that had The Golf Mat and camo netting for cover.  I'd spend as much time as possible just hitting balls into the net with an old Ben Hogan Apex iron.  It was a great thing to have a little sense of normalcy.  It'll be over before you know it!

Great read!  Here's to a safe end to your "Tour" and flight home.:drinks: I pulled three tours enforcing Southern Watch and know how you feel about missing the golf course.  Finished out my enlistment at the AF Academy and LOVED playing both the Silver and Blue courses there.  If you get through the St. Louis area with or without your clubs shoot me a PM.  I'll pick up the tab for the golf and beer.

Wow ... just wow.

Dude ... you MUST let us know when you are back at home, and safe.

First ... I love NC ... I own a corporation that does a lot of biz in NC (in fact, have a corporate apartment in Charlotte) ... when you get back ... yeah ... your first round, greens fees (and 19th hole drinks) are on me.

Second ... really, thank you for your service.

Third ... I know things are REALLY getting weird there the past few days (due to the Koran burning thing ... ). Damn man ... keep your head down. Come home safely. You are part of our community here ...

Thanks for the write-up, Josh.  After a flying tour in OEF that took my 2005 golf season and a trip to the CAOC and Iraq that took my 2010 season, I can assure you that standing on the first tee of your first round back will make for an awesome victory lap.  The smell of fairways and greens after months in that God-forsaken sand trap is too good to describe.  In that moment, you'll know for sure that you're finally home and all is good.

It may sound trite coming from a fellow USAF bubba, but thanks for what you're doing!   Stay low, and this too shall pass.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great replies. I play on doing a follow-up story when I finally get back on a golf course, which I hope will be about a month from today!

@bobfoster, I live in Rock Hill so I might have to take you up on that offer.

My dad will be returning there next month for yet his third tour. Kills me everytime he leaves, but we make do. As a military "brat" with a mother who's is a General in the Army, step father who is a retired IG, and father who was Air Force and is now Civil Service, I want to yet again, thank you for your services and what you give up for our freedoms.  I know it's a rough thing for not only you, but your family. When I talk to me Dad, he said that the best thing he brought with him for golf was the medicis 5 iron swing trainer. He said it wast the best, but it did keep his swing in relitively good shape for his return home. He said that, and planning his golf trips when he got home helped keep his mind running! He leaves next month and will miss this summer golf, which is when I usually go down for a week and we play everyday. It will be hard not making that trip as we both look forward to it so much. Keep reading, keep visualizing, and come home safe. God bless.

Let me know if theres anything you need golfwise. I have a living room full of clubs, practice equipment, used golf balls etc that I've been trying to sell but this surely seems like a better use of it - be more than happy to ship it over to you guys.

Having done the crime and the time in the sandbox, that first round back is one of the sweetest days of your life, regardless of how cold, wet and windy it may be.  Enjoy it!  Thanks for your service!  Have a Rip-It on me now. If we run into each other later, it'll be a beer on me then.
