Steady as a Rock: Robert Rock outlasts Tiger and others to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship

By Pete Pappas (The Greek Grind)

GolfWRX Staff Writer

Woods in Rock Rearview Mirror.jpg

Robert Rock won't soon forget this one.

He went to head-to-head against his idol and 14-time major champion Tiger Woods in the final group Sunday in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and won, tapping in on the 18th hole to finish 13-under par for a climactic one-shot victory.

"I can't believe I've done that," Rock said. "Today is such an amazing feeling."

Birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 looked to seal the victory for Rock, pushing his lead to two strokes with two holes to play. But a nervous tee shot on No. 18 added some very real drama to the finish, forcing Rock to take a penalty drop.

"On the 18th the wind blew it, and it was a weak strike," Rock said. "I didn't see it land, so I didn't know if it was in rough or sand."

As he did all day, Rock regained his composure and salvaged bogey to claim the almost $460,000 first-place check.

Woods was by some accounts the favorite to win the tournament, his first appearance in 2012, but failed to hold his 54-hole lead for just the ninth time in his career and only the third time in European Tour competition.

Rock and Woods traded shots early on, and were tied for the lead at 12-under and 13-under. They both carded par, birdie, birdie on their first three holes. On the second hole Woods drained an amazing 45-foot right-to-left downhill birdie putt after scrambling from beneath a tree the shot before, but he was unable to keep up his early pace. Woods started the back nine with a bogey on a par 5 and finished with eight-consecutive pars. He struggled with his ball striking on the back nine as well, hitting only two fairways and four greens.

Still, Tiger remained encouraged with his play overall.

"I was right there with a chance to win the golf tournament but didn't do it," Woods said. "I was just a touch off."

En route to the most important and significant win in his 14-year career, Rock battled a bona fide powerhouse field, which featured six of the world's top-10 players. He held off late charges from U.S. Open winners Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, as well as three-time 2011 European Tour winner Thomas Bjorn.

McIlroy quietly carded 22 birdies on the week to finish runner up, and was seen watching the scoreboard throughout the day. But the young Ulsterman was never able to make a run that would vault him into the lead.

McDowell finished tied for third with Woods and Bjorn, and recorded an ace on the par 3 12th hole, earning him the prize of a three night stay at the seven-star Emirates Palace, once a year for life (Spaniard Sergio Garcia also recorded a hole in one on No. 12 on opening day, earning the same prize).

With the win Rock moves to second in the Race to Dubai, and also into the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking (the top 50 on the World Ranking list prior to the start of the Masters earn invitations to the tournament).

Who'd be stupid enough to go on a golf forum if they didn't want to know the result?

Apparently a lot of people because everyone on here bitches about spoilers non stop.  Figured I would try and head off the inevitable storm lol.

Oh and Robert Rock played great against El Tigre.  Nice to see someone step up and get it done, and I think he handled the pressure better than tiger... 2 fairways?? tiger hit like 80% of them up until the last round, what happened???

It's a common courtesy to put a spoiler alert on such threads. Not a big deal to do so and thread titles show up even outside of the specific part of the forum that they are posted in.

Aside from that though, what is the point of having a 'staff writer' put a media style article on here when it is already being discussed? Is this simply part of a marketing push?

I was taking notes while watching this, and what struck me most was Tiger didn't look comfortable, didn't look relaxed, didn't look confident.  He looked tentative, unsure, and worried.

Robert Rock was the one who looked steady, certain, confident, and with purpose.

It was clear watching them both walk, watching both their facial expressions, and even in both their swings.

I mentioned to a friend before the last round began, that I didn't expect Tiger to pull this one out, and nothing against Tiger, but he's battling more than the field.  In my opinion he's battling something imaginary, something impossible.  He's chasing something that can't be reached.

His effort was not a bad effort for a tour player.  But by Tiger standards, it was a pedestrian effort.  No Tiger magic. Nothing resembling  the bold invincibile aura of yesterday.  He's simply not ready to dominate yet.  And he isn't even close to approaching his masterful best.

I'm sure he will win again.  Win majors.  And he will be masterful, and dominate.  But he'll NEVER dominate the way he once did.  NEVER be as masterful as he once was.

It is impossible.  And he needs to accept it is impossible.

Take that monkey of impossibility off his shoulders, and he will start winning again.  Winning regularly.

But never like before.  And that's OK.  Because his best will still be better than most everyone else's best more times than not.

Great write up by the way!

You were right when you said before the round that Tiger would choke. If he shoots 68 just like I said he would he would have won it. The Rock played great and I do give him credit for that. I was really expecting somebody to go real low and jump up and win it though. I guess the course was playing a little tougher than I thought it would. But you are right about Tiger not looking comfortable. I think sometimes he tries to be too technical, he needs to just go out and play golf and have fun!  But if he can get himself in contention he is going to win his share of tournaments, that's for sure!

How can a player be a tour pro for 10+ years and only win 1time ...before this win?
Where has he been?

He's been playing on tour. What do you mean where has he been? :blind:

He was tied for 8th through 2 rounds of the US Open last year and came 7th in the 2010 Open Championship, it's not like he has suddenly appeared from completely nowhere.

Unforgivable.

I think it actually makes his composure under pressure even more impressive. Very pleased to see him win again against such a strong field. Watched him on the range a couple of years ago hitting drivers off the deck. He came across as a nice chap and he seems to have really put in more effort over the last few years. Let's hope he is able to build on this - a few more good results and he should make the top 50, with all the opportunities that provides.

Fair enough.

A quick history lesson.  Rob has worked for a while at "Swingers driving range " in staffs in the midlands.  Doing all the things that golf shop workers do, selling mars bars and drinks, listening to the guy telling you shot by shot about his last round (all 110 shots of it).  Used to play in lots of the MIdland PGA events which was where i first met him.  Through good performances in these events he got into the Volvo PGA at Wentworth where he performed well and qualified for the tour in 2002 or 2003 (cant remember exactly).

Through the next few years he performed decently but probably spent a bit more time on the drink than on the range so was fighting to keep his card most of the time.  He is very much a MORAD player and still works with Matt Belsham in the UK and more recently Tony Johnstone on short game.  Every player matures at different rates and i hope he keeps working hard and becomes a more consistent winner.

He is also the perfect WRX'er.  He still uses his Ben Hogan blades a lot when playing at home.  We regripped them last year and they are pretty well worn but beautiful to look at.  He also is one of the very few tour players who could coach effectively.  He is a swing nerd and knows his own swing inside out.

And surely a Loreal endorsement cant be far away !

My issue is your lack of understanding about how difficult it is to win on tour.  A lot of guys spend half their lives out there and never do win.  Makes it all the more amazing when guys like Sam (Snead) Jack (Nicklaus) and Tiger win 60 or 70 times.

Very few guys have won as much as Tiger, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nick although you wouldn't know it to see some of the comments around here lately.

Mayhaps you should try to educate yourself to the golf world outside of TW.

Just a thought...
