Does anyone have any experience with the stock shaft in the 290?  That deep face and 7.5 head combo is very intriguing but i have no experience with that brand of shafts.

I've been told that you really need a soft tip shaft to get the 7.5 useable or hit the ball with a VERY high ascending impact angle and have a swing speed greater than tour average. At 9.0, the head is still very low spin.  If you can stand the weight of the shaft and the stiffness works for you, then you might have a winner with that combo.  The 43 has the softest tip of the C.Kuas.

That's what I heard as well.  I hit the 9.0 with stock stiff against my 8.5 razrhawk tour with a voodoo xvs7, and got the same launch and spin numbers.  I was contemplating the 7.5 but after seeing that I stuck with the 9.0 and am going to put the xvs7 in it, going to be a sick combo!!!

Sounds like a good looking setup.

Does Cleveland custom pick Driver heads like Ping if you want a specific loft or at least to make you sure you are getting the desired loft that you want?

I don't know the details but they are making mine with 2* open face angle.  I'm sure if you ordered through a good account, they could get you one.

Wonder how they do it (opening the club face).  I'd be really nice if you could post a few pics of your 290 when you get it.

They either cherry pick a head that's 2 open or they shim it that way.  I will definitely post some pics.

I am curious about something...the Cleveland drivers are always highly rated in Golf Digest Survey... other than Cleveland players, how many players are using one on the Tour?

I like the way the Cleveland drivers look and feel in the shop but I almost never see  anyone on my course or on my TV that is using one...as I posted, since they are rated so highly, why are they not being used?  Is golf digest giving a false report? Etc. Etc.

CONSPIRACY!

No, I think in many cases other companies pay guys not under contract money to play their stuff. I have to ask, who cares what anyone else is playing? If that's the standard you go by, then you should have an R11S in the bag by this weekend. You can't get any safer than a TM driver if fitting in is so key.

I have had all 3 Hibores,(My son hit the monster for a while too) the Launcher DST and liked all but the HIbore XLS. the DST is a BEAST! The new cleveland classic is a deep faced bomber according to all I have heard and read.

The Cleveland driver doesn't appeal to my eye, but that being said I've hit it and it performs quite well.  To your golf digest comment, they will put in anything that company a,b,or c pays them to put in.

Just spent some time at a local Golf Galaxy..... The driver looks awesome to me, except my eyes tell me it has a closed face.  Loved how deep the face was though...  I'll be sticking with my driver, but I can see what someone might like about the Classic Cleveland...    (reminder, get fit for whatever driver you purchase...)

Jason is from my hometown, I've known him and his father for a few years, and yes he like his father is a down to earth guy.  Really a great guy to know and talk with. When you play with him its just humilating how far he hits it past you.

I played the Cleveland classic a week ago as a demo from Edwin Watts.  I have a Taylormade R5, so i compared both drivers.  The great thing about the Cleveland was with my really awful swing, when the stars aligned ,it sent that ball out there, bonus was when the stars didn't align and my ugly swing came out it still sent the ball flying a good distance for me (i average 220-235 on my drives).

The bad thing, i still felt that i got the same performance, not as much forgiveness, but overall same trajectory and distance with my R5.  I was really hoping that this was going to become my new driver once it went on sale, but alas i'm still looking for something that gives me a sense of better performance than i already have.

One thing I will say about Cleveland is I love their Mashie Hybrid.  It performs out of every lie i put my ball in (which are many) and sends the ball high, long and it lands soft.  If anyone on this thread is in search of a new hybrid, stop looking and go buy the MASHIE!

tour guys dont play what they get paid to play.

they play the club they hit the best. why do you think they all use the TM or 910D drivers. almost all of them use one of those two.

I am sorry, but this is wrong. Those 2 companies pay the most players to play their equipment. Nearly every player on Tour feels that they can play with product from any company. It almost always boils down to who will pay the most money.

I haven't seen one that didn't look shut to my eye. I can't do anything but hook it, so I haven't really swung it more than a small handful of times. It seems like lots of people on WRX are really raving about this driver, but I haven't seen one sell at the local Golfsmith.

The 270 and 290 heads are very shut, but the tour is a bit smaller and about a degree open, plus it's CG is way higher.  It's a legit tour stock head from all everything I've heard.

It's probably the only driver I'm truly interested in trying this year, does everything for me, from looks to specs to shot shape. Love, love loveeee everything about that head, just can't find one anywhere around here to hit and don't want to order without hitting one first.

Well I hate closed face drivers or whatever head that looks closed.  (i.e : I thought the G15 looked way too close for my liking)
But the 3 290's head that I tried all seemed dead square to me.  I'd be even more interested if it was 2* open.

Seems like the 290 has something over the Tour head because most if not all of the staffers are going with it.  That thing can really kill spin.  Paired with a low spin shaft, it must be freaking long.

I have played open faced drivers for a few years, as I fight the lefts...but I agree with LObin, dead square.  And from what I've seen, the Tour model has a larger footprint.  I put the 290 next to a RazrHawk Tour, and the 290 (even though its 10 ccs bigger) looked way smaller, because it is so deep.  The Tour, even though it's a smaller head isn't as deep, and actually looks bigger than the 290, made my decision easy!

290 is 460cc's and obviously lighter, it's possible the pros are having 290's built with the 310's CG setup, etc.
