I got this Ping putter last week for $25. The shop owner even threw on a new Pingman grip. It is used of course, but looked absolutely brand new. I am thinking about sending it to someone for a sound slot. Any suggestions? I am wondering how old this putter is.

Not old.  The first Anser 2s first came out in the early 80s.  Those had a tumbled finish and white paintfill.  This looks more like the Guyson (blasted) finish.  Great putter.

Not quite. The later models have a colour code dot in the cavity.
The example from the OP looks to be around 1995 vintage - early models would have a plain face with no markings. Classic putter - I have one in the bag myself .
I wouldn't "beach" it though - if you want a sound slot, get that specific model.

Curious why a sound slot would be less effective in this putter as opposed to a Ping putter that came with a sound slot. Same putter. Same metal. Just no sound slot, right?

you can use the zip code on the putter, and figure out when it was made.

the Ping Company, has had different zip codes, the building hasnt moved, but Phoenix has grown and the zip codes have been realigned but the USPS during the last 50 years or so.

Thanks for the info. Interesting, but gives me a 39 year range. Sure is hard to date a putter.

Not that important, just curious for the most part.

I love the putter. Ironic a $25 putter is one of my favorites.

The Answer 2 is a great puttter as is.No way I would beach one. It putts and sounds great in stock form .The sound will change for the worse with a slot. Enjoy your great pickup as is !

I received a similar looking (Anser 4) putter and was curious on when it was made as well. BeCu finish, same face/back as yours also. :p

That's a lovely putter you have there.

I'd guess at early 2000s for it.

As George says they used to be tumbled finish with white paintfill. Then as far as I recall they went guyson finish/black paintfill (like yours) and then guyson/black but with the lie dot in the cavity. I have the guyson/black/lie dot and I got mine in 2005.

Early 2000s I'd say. Maybe Ping could look it up on their database for a deinitive answer. Er anser

Beryllium Copper is not a finish, it was the material used to cast the head.

The OP's putter is from the early 80's.
