This, for me at least. I was so pissed when my wife threw out last year's issue after like a week. It's a reference, something to read, well, you know where. Central location showing lots of new clubs that I'll be looking to pick up used for a fraction of the new price 6-12 months from now.
As for the wife throwing out the mag! Two words: Divorce Lawyer!
Just kidding! My wife plays and looks at it from time to time and we play a lot together during the summer!

So many different skill levels in golf. For a dedicated player the stock shafts don't mean anything anyway.

I would much rather buy a year-old club at a big discount and see how it performs over several rounds on the course than pay full retail and make a decision based on a simulator. I can always unload it and not lose much. The Hot List is one of the best references to help me make decisions for my online purchases. I am much more interested in hearing what real golfers have to say as opposed to robotic testing.
My only complaint is that they didn't list all the products they tested like Consumer Reports would have. I want to know how a product tested even if it tested poorly.

It's nice reading during these cold ohio winters but you have to go hit it to see for sure.

That's incredible! I would love to hear that.
My take - I still like the Hot List, but indeed do take it with a grain of salt. I'm almost always focused on the driver and Players' irons, and then wedges. It's good reading, but it still takes personal preference (or bias) to determine the final decision.

Ever? Do you mean companies like Scor, Rife, Seemore, Scratch, Fourteen, Bettinardi, and Heavy? Because they've all made the list in the last two years alone?

Did you look at the list? Not only the big boys.
...and the smaller brands were treated like Jagdish, Flounder and Mustang at the Omega rush party in Animal House.

Missed Muhammad....."We've already met. SUPER!!!!"
It is important to get this correct. The four gentleman are Mohammet, Jugdish, Sidney and Clayton.

It looks like that was a 1 off
This list loses credibility without those companies. But we all know who they are marketing for anyway.
How is the Trusty Rusty wedge on that list? They should put the Ping Eye 2's on there since you can still get replacements.

great point Golfjunki71 -- as a lifelong journalist, that was truly hilarious...almost like a planned "let's give all our biggest potential advertisers a nice plug right at the FRONT of the article and let's give them EACH an attaboy so there are no ruffled feathers"

It was Golf Mag, at least two years ago I think. The dimension information was particularly useful (included topline thickness) in comparing "players" irons.

For some its a "Hot List", for others its a "Not List"
For some its a "Go List" for others just a "Ho List"
For me its simply the latest list of new equipment for the purpose of selling magazines and new/renewal subscriptions. It would be unrealistic to conclude there is not "some" degree of bias towards the largest OEMs responsible for huge adversting revenues for the magazine. That is not to say the information is untruthful, and not worth reading. I personally fine it very entertaining to read.
We all know it is best to test clubs yourself whenever possible, but testing all the new clubs is simply not possible. Given that reality, the greatest value of Magazine "Hot Lists" is to help you narrow down your personal list of the clubs you hope to test. For that, I give some credit to Golf Digest.
Unfortunately there are plenty of brands/clubs that would work great for you that will never appear in the "gold" section of the hot list. Those with a smaller market share, and a very small or non-existnet revnue contribuion to the magazine are obviously at a disadvantage.
It a very tough industry and it takes money to get attention and market share. Smaller equipment companies in the golf industry have been failing at an accelerating rate over the past decade, while companies like TaylorMade and Callaway have the R&D bucks and the advertising budgets to stay ahead of the curve. That trend would likely continue even in years when their latest clubs were not any better than those of much smaller OEMs.
