I was wondering who you think are the most overrated players on the PGA Tour?  I have three that come to mind.  All three have won on tour but I do not see them living up to expectations.

1. Jason Day
2. Dustin Johnson
3. Hunter Mahan

Rickie Fowler:  Can't see him living up to the hype.  His swing just seems like it has little margin for any timing error.
Dustin Johnson:  I don't get the impression that's he's got the mental toughness to succeed.

All three will probably get better when they're older......  you've got to remember that golfers don't generally peak until sometime in their low to mid 30s.  Hunter turns 30 this year and the other guys have a while.

Also, what expectations are you placing on them?  Winning trumps all or consistent golf rules?

I don't get why Dustin Johnson's name keeps being brought up.  The guy has won every year he has been on tour since he turned pro in 2007 including two wins last year (5 wins in 4 years).  Sure he should have won a major, but he has at least been in the running and I believe he will win more than 1.

I would agree with Rickie Fowler though, but it is kind of hard to say he is overrated since he is still pretty much a rookie and has won once (albeit not on the PGA tour).

geez why not throw Patrick Cantlay onto the list? He's played in a few events and hasn't won yet. I'm pretty sure there's a highly touted fetus somewhere in the US that we could throw on there aswell. Talk about what have you done for me lately.

Jason Day is 24 and has finished second in 2 majors. Dustin Johnson has 5 PGA wins and has held Sunday leads in 2 different majors. Hunter Mahan is a solid pro but i haven't heard too many people touting him as a hall of famer. So not sure i'd call him overrated.

The 3 best players (other then Tiger) of our generation are undoubtedly Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh. And both Johnson and Day are ahead of where Singh and Els were at this stage of their careers. With the only argument being that at 27 Ernie had 3 wins while DJ has 5....however Ernie had a major

I think Dustin Johnson will continue to win, and I don't see him as overrated. I see him as not living up to his potential. I've watched him at the range a few times and around the short game area. And he just seems lazy, as though he is just living off of natural ability. That natural ability will get him a bunch of wins, and maybe some majors, but he won't be breaking records. It happens in other sports all of the time, athletes with a ton of potential as passed by people who work harder.

I agree. He may not be the most consistent but he finds his way to the top of the leader board enough.

I see Jason Day, DJ and Rickie Fowler as sublime prospects who, over the next decade or so will be massive threats in (just about) every major

Keegan Bradley - yeah, he's had a few great tournaments but also a bunch of awful ones. Until he becomes consistently good, I think he's overrated.
Bill Haas - he seems like a great guy and I like him, but as far as golf talent goes, I don't think he's quite as good as people act like he is.
Dustin Johnson - has a lot of flaws in his game. Lots of potential, but he's got to get better. I'm not saying he won't, but right now he's a little overrated.
Jason Day - looked great until he went back home, and he played awful in Australia as well as at the Chevron World Challenge. I honestly don't know what to expect in 2012.

wow, couldnt disagree with you more except for DJ..maybe. When you win a major you are now officially not overated. Sergio would be overated.
Westwood might be one, and Kuchar is another

Probably expectations - isn't that what being overrated is about?

Rickie Fowler (no contest imho) hasn't won anything and I can't seem to remember him contentending in any major... CHIII has been way below expectations thus far.  Go back a bit further and consider DLIII or Justin Leonard (both are major champs, but the bar was presumed to be much higher given their talent).  Remember Ty Tryon?

Prior to this year I would have said Rory McIlroy... whoops.  Same with Matt Kutchar until recently.  Whoops again.

I like him but I would have to say at this point in time it's Fowler. For being 32nd in the OWGR and his only professional win being the Korean Open he gets a lot of attention and hype.

I'm not sure what is meant by "overrated."

Overrated by who?  Have I missed something?  Is Dustin Johnson rated anywhere, apart from his OWGR?

Some people think the world of these guys, while others don't.  I think their on-course accomplishments speak for themselves.

But I will say this:  I have never seen a winless (PGA TOUR) player more hyped and talked about than Rickie Fowler.

Rory has been pro since 2007, he has 5 wins, which is very good. However, the way people talk about him you would think he has 10 wins and 3 majors. I think he's one of the best ball strikers on tour, but definitely overrated. When he gets going with the putter he's great, but he's also very streaky.

Agreed, that was first name that came to my mind when I saw the topic. He's got so much talent but still can't do that well. I know he's won a tourney or two but with his talent, he should've won 10-20 tournaments by now.

I have to agree, overrated is all relative and Rory, in spite of his US Open win and obvious talent, is so far up on a pedestal, he may never achieve the press's expectations.
