Hardest:  Ko Olau,  I think when I played it the slope was 155.  The fairways where super wet and the rough was not cut.  I lost 14 balls 4 which were in the middle of the fairway.  The three guys I played with each lost atleast 40 each.

+1

When wind was swepting around me, I thought I was being punised by golf god!

This is one of the hardest course I ever played.

When I came back to play my home course, it felt like playing in city muni course!

The Ocean Course has the highest combination of Slope Rating (155) and Course  Rating (79.6) in America, according to the U.S. Golf Association.
as a caddy there for a few years i may be a little biased, but Golf Digest and the USGA seem to agree as well

Hardest ... ever( for me?) I play golf all over earth. But ... Tierra del Sol on Aruba beats me up every time. It is not insanely long ... (6800 or so) ... BUT ... it is on the coast ... (slope 132 or so) ... the reason? It is the easterm most island of the Netherlands Antilles ... nothing between it and the UK ... wins that built up over the cours of a couple thousands miles on nothing but ocean. There is actually a consistant 25 - 35 MPH wind (on a calm day ... with no storms ... ;) ... like ... ALWAYS.

There's a couple of holes where in order to hit the green (or have any chance to) ... it is necessary to line up so that one is hitting it straight out over the ocean ... at nearly a right angle to the green.

This one has nothing to do with distance ... it is 100% about trying to understand what a golf ball does in the wind. THAT is "hard" ... ;)

Tiger Tees at The International in Bolton MA. 8325 yds (80.0 154). Stupid long.  Shot 74 at Taconic the day before and did not break 90 at the Int'l. PS they have been named the Tiger Tees since the 1970's.

I second this one. So long you can see the curvature of the earth at times. Scariest hole par 3 16th. 270 from the tips, slightly uphill all carry over a 200 foot drop into a valley with nothing but water at the bottom. 2 tier green only 24 yards deep. Miss right, left or short your down the hill. Miss long and your up on a hill making a downhill lob out of deep rough to a fast green that runs away from you. Thin this shot and your down the hill in the water. Only safe bail out on this hole from the tips is the red tee 185 ahead of you. Brutal .........This one is an all day sucker ....

Close second - Cog Hill Dubsdread

Wow.... 3 pages into this thread and not one person has said Pinehurst #2.  Two fields of the US Open (so roughly 300 players) has played there and only one guy has finished under par. After the redesign it tips out at 7,500 and if you don't have a stellar short game it will bring you to your knees (it plays a little easier sometimes when the greens aren't running real fast but when the green speed is up ........... goodnight haha)

Oh yeah man Pete Dye Coruse down at French lick is beast of course. I heard Jeff Overton shot like 78 down there the first time he played tips and hes on tour and played Rider Cup and thats when the greens were everyday speed and rough was short. I know without a doubt that course is harder then any course anybody else mentions.

Oops forgot about ocean course that one got me every time on golden tee it probably is harder than Pete Dye since there aint a ocean in Indiana

Rich Harvest Farms 7700 yards, 78.5/153

I was really hoping someone would say this one!!!

Got to play it in an AJGA event at Rich Harvest back in 2004.  It was not only the most difficult but also the best maintained course I've ever seen.

Before we started the practice round Jerry Rich passed out a green repair tool to every kid and said "I've kicked CEOs off this course for not taking proper care of it.  Take care of the course or you will not play."

So nice, so long, so freaking difficult!  Shot a 79 in the third round, only time in the 3 rounds I broke 80 - and I was a 0 at the time.

One of my favorite courses in Utah in Thanksgiving Point. It's a bit on the longer side from the tips, which is fun because after most par 5 tee shots I'm usually left with a 6 iron or shorter, and this course leaves for some long approach shots - letting me hit more clubs in the bag.

Stowe Mountain in Vermont has a 143 slope and is only 6400yds. A lot of holes on the front are cliffside and there's water in play on the back. Also the greens are tiny, there's a couple of short par 4's where you can miss the postage stamp green by like 3 yards and be off a cliff. Lots of elevation changes too

tough course, but you could never play a tournament there, too weird a track

Pauite Wolf coure in Vegas is a BEAST!!!  Always windy, pushes 7700 yards, and some of the par 4's (498 to 515 yards)with the wind blowing, less then a handful of players on the planet can get on in regulation.  Played a 144 man tournament, and 4 holes, no one could reach and these were good players from all over the country.  Crazy!!!

If you can't reach the greens in regulation, then you are playing the wrong set of tees!

A Place called thunderhill in Madison Ohio. 78.5rating/158 slope. nearly 100 water hazards. from the tips it's 7500 yards. there are 4 par 5''s #4 is 604, #8 is 620 and 18 is a brutal 596. Played there the first time 15 years ago when i was first getting seriously into golf and shot a 67, but decided to go ahead and play the back 9 anyway.

:russian_roulette:

A good friend of mine insists that Thunder hills is by far the hardest course around, I'd love to give it a try.

Personally the hardest course I've ever played was the Pete Dye course in French Lick, IN.  I don't recall the numbers, but from the tips this was a beast made only worse by a constant 30mph wind. We got rained out on 17. It was the only time I have ever felt beaten by a course.

its 7604 (hardly pushing 7700) and they are playing the wrong tees if they cant reach the green in reg. those holes do not play as long as they are listed.

the black (tournament) tees play  7346 according to my yardage book but the course is designed for 2 prevailing winds so in order to make it that length for 2 different wind directions, the tips become extreme. if you actually were to walk back to the tips on every hole it plays just shy of 8000 (at sea level obviously). cant wait to see the pros struggle to shoot par at the pga champ this year.

this is how this course used to make me feel :russian_roulette:
good luck shadow. get yourself a good caddie

Firestone South from the tips 2 weeks before the WCG event, it was very humbling...BB

I can 2nd Firestone South Course from the Tips.  I played there in 2010 about 3wks after Mahan won there.  The rough was still long, although I'm sure not as long as for the event.  You could see all the browned our areas where the bleachers and stands were at.  I played about as well as I did all year long and still shot 80 (+10) with 3 doubles. We started on #10 and after about 4-5 holes, I stopped looking at the scorecard to see the yardage on the par-4's.  I just knew they were all long as F' so why try to put a number into my head of how far I thought I needed to hit it.  So many holes were 470-485, two par-4's were 495. My face still hurts from the perma grin I had on my face that day.

Druids Heath golf club in Ireland, 74xx on the card there were 6 tee boxes that are not that are much longer and in ireland well the wind does you no favors. Absolute GEM of a course. Pro said that we (dad and I) were the only two guys since Poulter, clark and herrington had teed it up from the tips and played the course. He was shocked we finished haha. Great track. here is the link.
http://www.druidsgle...ath-golf-course

Druids Glen is no push over either but more of a parkland layout.

Yes druids Heath has a rating of 77.

As for the toughest course, I'll go with The Ranch in San Jose, CA.  Wouldn't want to play there too often!  From just over 6600 yards it manages a 152 slope.  WOW!  Not too long but very difficult, really have to be on top of you game there.  But actually, a really good design with variety and fun to test your game there every once in a while.

I have to agree. The ranch front 9 is pretty brutal! a crazy hilly course with tight fairways.

Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Playing from the tips in the wind can be brutal. I played with gusts of 40 mph left to right and my 2 iron came in handy. I hit my driver and I swear that the ball moved backwards in the wind (LOL). I hit knockdowns all day, kept the driver in the bag and shot 81. The rest of my foursome were pissed - they kept trying to hit drivers into the wind...
