It depends on the school. Although I have heard of school's giving them to athletes because they were athletes, most schools completely separate the decision to give academic scholarships as to avoid any potential conflicts. At many schools, they are completely merit based and require a certain GPA and SAT cutoff.

Rule of thumb would be to look at your athletics as with any other HS extracurricular. Some schools just go with a gpa /sat formula, others factor in the 'soft' qualifications like art, music, sports, etc. typically, d3 schools give academic money in rough proportion to relative endowment. The general stats published by the school is a fair place to start. Not unusual to see 40% or higher awards with decent scores and grades, depending on the school.

I went to a Division III school that is highly focused on academics. You are correct in that no Division III college will give you an athletic scholarship. I am not sure about your financial aid situation but it is more than likely that you will not qualify for much (but I dunno your situation). Your best bets are to find academic scholarships that are available within the state, but these are more likely to be seriously competitive. I also don't know your GPA and AP credits/course load but to be competitive in most academic scholarships you will need to be in the minimum of the top 10% of your class.

This is also a great reality check. It is called a 'Class Profile' and lists all of the averages for the incoming freshman class (i.e. SAT and GPA). If your within the average then you have a great chance to get accepted to the school but not necessarily a scholarship.

Find some D3 schools you would to attend as a student and as a golfer. Send the coach and email describing you interest in the school and the golf , and give some basic info about you...tournament avg, GPA, SAT/ACT scores, Many factors go into the aid package offered--Test Scores, GPA, Class Rank, family income/assets, etc...

just for some background information: i am from ontario canada and i have an 85% average in school in my junior year of highschool. my average scores this year in tournaments were from 74-80ish (i know its a large average but dont have all the scores this year on hand at the moment). i have not written my SAT's yet either. I want to know how much i could possibly be given scholarship wise because if it isnt that much than there is no point to me trying to go to the US for golf if it would be cheaper just to remain in Canada. thanks for all the answers so far and keep them coming if you have any input!

D 3 schools with large endowments will help you get to school if they want you. I received a leadership scholarship back in the day. While the cost of many of these private schools has gone way up, the money they give out to students has also risen. If you would be interested in looking at schools in VA pm me and I'll point you at some quality schools with great academic and athletic programs.

I played at a small DIII school and had an academic-based scholarship--it was around 40% I think based on pretty solid grades/SAT. It does depend on the particular school; if you can't find the info on their websites, the folks in admissions will know.

I'm going to Transylvania next year to play golf. i got looks at some mid range d2 schools and not so good d1 schools. but i felt more comfortable at a smaller school with a better golf team. Currently their rank is 9th, and have been conference champs the past 5 years. Transy is a great academic institution, my GPA is 3.5 and i scored a 23 on my ACT. My score average is 75.4

I was looking into playing DIII golf but ended up going to a smaller DII school to play and I was offered around the same amount at both schools (about 40%). Obviously the DIII school came in the form of academic scholarship. The DII school I attended gave me about 40% of my scholarship in athletics and 60% in academics. Hopefully this helps a little.

I played Division 3 Golf and Football, scholarships are not given.  There is a lot of free money out via grants and academic scholarships.  If there is money out there and your good enough they will find it.  Most likely Financial Aid is based upon your EFC or Expected Family Contribution. Also, Division 3 great, you get to play a lot of exclusive course, practice is free, and you can get some great equipment through manufacture programs at a significant discount.  Leveraging Division 3 schools against each other, you may be able to find more aid (free money) for schooling.  Good Luck in your search, it's a great experience, one of the best of my life!!! My aid before loans was about 70% grants and scholarships.  There are a lot of good schools in PA if your looking.  PM me if you have any questions and more importantly good luck!!!

Most D3 schools have a scholarship calculator on their admissions page.  It will ask for your ACT/SAT scores and GPA.

this is true, my school had this. also when you make your visits make sure you ask the admissions counselor any questions you may have money wise. they should know the answers.

Not all D3 the same...Oglethorpe U in ATL plays high level golf. Has a fair amount of $$ for solid GPA/SAT.
Berry College in Rome GA pretty good.

I respectively disagree...actually I disagree with most of what you said, if not all of what you said. Apart from you poor grammar, what I got from your post was this. D3 sucks...get a tour striker and magically you'll be playing top D1...what a closed minded response. Like I said in my above posts I'm committing to a top 10 D3 school that has fun on the course, and is very good. IN FACT our number one player Justin Teresko played in the Patriot All-American Tournament in Arizona and came in T20 out of the top D1/D2/D3 players. He was also in the top 5 for college golfers in Kentucky...

Just because your "friend" had a horrid time at his college, didn't compete whatsoever and had no fun doesn't mean all D3 colleges are the same...sorry for the heated post but I took great offense to your response.

I didn't know how to respond to that drivel, good job.

Good Luck as well, I played D3- it was a lot of fun and less pressure, we even had some good players, one guy won in a playoff in near darkness, he beat out players from 40 some schools, in VA and NC including all the d-1 guys from UVA, Carolina etc.

Michael Breed is also from my alma matter, not a waste of time at all.

Thank you sir, nothing angers me more than poor grammar, and bigoted response. I wanted to get a great education, from a small school. But continue my dream of playing College golf. My good friend did the PGM at Methodist; wasn't even on the team, and is now on the Hooters Tour and working an "Exclusive" club in South Beach. It's not about the size of the Dog in the Fight, but the size of Fight in the Dog.

Consider an NAIA school. You can get both academic and athletic scholarships.

D3 sports can be extremely competitive.
i went to a D3 school.  it was a small state college but had a top 3 football team (in the nation.  we actually had a few players drafted to NFL), top 5 basketball and top 5 track & fiend program.  our track & field team often competed against D1 & D2 schools.
i competed in triple jump and high jump, and they gave me a scholarship.  it was some sort of academic scholarship which i did not really deserve because my grades were "not so great"
luckily, i was sorta recruited and received the scholarship without asking/applying for it.
however, i did some of my teammates asking the coach about it, and a few of them managed to receive the scholarships in different names and amounts.
just go ask the coaches and the counselors.

Moe, you gotta watch it son.  You corrected my spelling in a post last week, in which your correction had a misspelling.  Now, you say nothing angers you more than poor grammar, while an editor would have a field day with your above post.   I'm only mentioning it becasue you are so quick to criticize others.

Remember glass houses!!

In regards to his post, I think you may have missed the fact that it seemed full of sarcasm to me.

just for some background information: i am from ontario canada and i have an 85% average in school in my junior year of highschool. my average scores this year in tournaments were from 74-80ish (i know its a large average but dont have all the scores this year on hand at the moment). i have not written my SAT's yet either. I want to know how much i could possibly be given scholarship wise because if it isnt that much than there is no point to me trying to go to the US for golf if it would be cheaper just to remain in Canada. thanks for all the answers so far and keep them coming if you have any input!

While it's still frozen in Canada I would spend this semester hitting the books and pulling up your GPA. Also, get your hands on an SAT study guide. As a second semester junior time is running out for the SAT's as you now have less than a year to get your college applications completed. Good Luck with your studies and your Golf!

LOL!!! Thanks for having a sense of humor :)   Not too shabby for a Moeller Grad.  BTW, I went to Beavercreek...way back in the day when they weren't too bad.    if you look for that little blip on your map about 50 miles north of Cincinnati you might see it :)
