Hey guys I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good public grass driving range in the Portland Metro Area? I'll give you a rundown of what ranges I go to when I want to hit off grass and why I have a beef with each one.

Heron Lakes  - am tired of hard sand fill that lies beneath the centimeter of grass.

Langdon Farms - Great grass range it's just way out of the way, do they close down the grass tees in the winter?

The Reserve - Frustrated because they won't let you hit balls unless you have a tee time, at least in my experience.

Pumpkin ridge - again way out of the way and I'm sure they close their grass in the winter

OGA - Great grass range but way out of the way

Arrowhead - Way out of the way

Camas Meadows - Kind of like heron lakes, your basically hitting out of a fairway bunker

The Cedars - I'm not sure if they close their grass range in the winter?

Gresham Golf Course - Probably one of my favorite grass ranges but it's way out of the way

Three RIvers - Awesome grass range for the winter time just way out of the way

Lewis River - You can't hit more then a 6 iron.

Quail Valley - Again awesome grass range but way out of the way

Anybody else have any other suggestions? I wish I could work out a deal with Columbia Edgewater to just hit range balls since it's so centrally located.

not from porland, but it might be worth it to call Columbia Edgewater about maybe getting a special pass or range membership. Lots of courses are struggling right now and they may be willing to work with you. Worth a shot if its close

I doubt Columbia Edgewater would that that.

Edgewater has their mason membership which consists of unlimited use to their short game areas and par 3 course but only limited access to the driving range. $142 a month plus $1500 initiation. I'd have to call up and see what limited access to the driving range is but for that price and initiation I wouldn't do it.

Stone creek, still kinda out of the way but it's a good range with  short game area. I think it's mats only for the winter tho.

Trails End In Oregon City has a Grass area dont know how long it is open with the rain and pending weather.  they have a large practice green, gets a little swampy around the chipping green.
But its a place i like to go the Owner is a Master clubmaker and is a pretty funny guy.

Played at Langdon Farms this weekend and the range was on the grass.  When asked how often?, the reply was "when ever possible"........................
what it's worth.............

My experience with Langdon is that they'll be on grass until it freezes a few times.  I'd expect from the first major freeze until March will be off the mats.

I've been using Trails End for the last month or so. Right now the grass area is closed - bummer. But at least some of the covered bays have heaters!

Mallard Creek has a grass one but it is closed during the winter. On the plus side they have a covered driving range. Probably out of the way for most. They also recently just purchased some new mats but they really need to replace the rest of the hard rubber ones that must have been installed when the course was built. I was out yesterday and the cold weather has taken it's toll on the greens.

Stone creek but I'd call before you head out to see if they are on the mats or grass

Stone Creek's driving range uses mats during the winter. I believe Charbonaue has a grass driving range.

Sad to hear about the greens at Mallard Creek. I thought that was a really good track.

Yeah they just haven't gotten a chance to thaw out. I was trying to fix ball marks on the green and was running into solid ground just below the surface. I am sure it will bounce back.

The only decent public grass ranges in the area are Langdon and Pumpkin Ridge.  Both of these have very good sand based surface that is like hitting off of a mowed fairway.  Both use good balls as well.  Both are on mats in the winter and even on weekdays during "the season" sometimes.  Best to call and ask.

IMO, Quail Valley's grass range is not that good and their yellow (durability) balls suck.  BTW, they are on mats until at least middle of March.

The grass range that I didn't see mentioned here is Tualatin Island Greens.  It's not the level of Langdon but better than Heron Lakes.  They also have putting green, chipping green, bunker and a pitching area.
