My winter project is a set of Maxfli Revo Black Dot's.  I was hoping to 'pretty them up' a bit and wanted to check in to refinishing options.  However I'm not sure what metal they are made out of.  I did a little searching and it seemed like they may be a combo of chrome and nickle plating, which makes me thing my options are limited.

Anyone know if it's possible to caswell or torch these heads?

Updated with pics of the first finished club.  Still might change the paintfill to a blue/white combo.  Thinking white letters and a blue dot.  Can't wait to try hitting a 1 iron again :)

Due to the Nickel plating I don't believe you can do any Caswelling at all..you could have them unplated,( deplated) and leave them steel then torch them if they are a carbon steel..won't help much if they are stainless under there.  Heck I am thinking about having my 2009 Tour Preferred made devoid of chrome and then have them nickel plated.  Had a set of the Revo Black dots...SO SOFT!! loved them.

Good luck..I think my information on the head construction is correct.

I believe they were composed of a high nickel content then double plated. Great irons just as they are in my opinion. One of the best low offset mid sized irons ever and most certainly on "The List".

And yes I'm referring the Black and not the Red which were an oversized head, not a "mid" to my eyes. The Red dots were awful and not even in the same league.

Agree with how good these were(are), only thing that kicked them out of the bag was the Maxfli A10 Tourney progressive set...and IF I see another set of those cheap, I will have myself a second set of irons!!  Same nickel finish and feel.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  Guess I'll just be doing paint fill and ferrules on these.  I have 1i - GW, might have to play a couple 'iron only' rounds next summer.

Also for all the nostalgia comments...I got these from a guy on this board.  His name is Mr. Maxfli and he found a connection to buy new, old stock of a bunch of Maxfli stuff.  I heard he is going back to the sale again in a week or two so if you really want another set he can probably get you one.  His prices were great and quick shipping.

Just confirming, nickel alloy with chrome plating. Very soft. Have a gash in my 6 iron sole from a hidden rock chipping out of a forest.

Black ferrules with chrome trim rings look awesome with these irons.

Ha ha...they are beautiful irons.  I just thought they would look amazing blacked out, but I have no complaints against leaving them as is.  I just wish I could've played them this year instead of having them taunt me all winter with their gorgeousness

I believe those Rev irons are made of 304/18-8 stainless steel (or similar), which is then nickle/chrome plated.  That grade of stainless is soft, and will have forged like characteristics: soft impact feel, but they will gather bag chatter pretty quickly.

Good stuff.

Whatever they are made out of they are soft as heck, they used the same material when they did the Australian Blades also...about the only good set of CAST blades I can think of...not that forgiving 3-6 irons, but very nice 7 iron down if you want a progressive set.

Okay, I'm going to backpedal.  Read something recently that they are cast with some "nickel" alloy of some sort.  Regardless of what they are made from, they are soft to be sure.:)

I used to play the Revolution Blacks and they were very soft and solid.  They also have low constant offset through the long irons.  Whatever the nickel alloy is that these are made from, reminds me alot of 304 stainless.  They feel softer than most forgings and combined with how the COG was positioned on these, they are one of the best feeling irons I have ever hit.  Be careful with them, they ding very easy. For a "players iron", they're very playable and not overly "demanding" at all.  Absolutely one of the modern classics.

Last week a guy at my club brought out his Australian Blade 1 iron, from the set that was made at the same time as the Revolutions.  That baby has zero offset.

Thanks to Mr. Maxfli I was introduced to the Maxfli Revolutions Black dots. I shafted them with X200's that were essentially SSX1. I was able to play 18 holes with them last week and they feel softer than my 2011 Tour Preferred MC/MB's. I had to tweak a couple of the lofts and lies and I will say they were some of the easiest clubs to bend that I have done to date. I sold my back up 2009 Tour Preferreds because the Revolutions feel so much better and performed just as well and I really like the minimal constant offset.

To the origianl OP, I'd keep them just the way they are.

Another buyer of Mr. Maxfli's "stash". Great guy to deal with! My heads are currently unshafted, but bought a set of KBS .370 to put in them as a winter project. Was also wondering what kind of ferrules to put in them...

When I got them in the mail, I swear, I had never seen an iron head as beautiful as the Revo's... NO offset, perfect PW shape... Cannot wait to hit them.

I know cell parts is a popular choice amongst wrxers, but is there another option?

I just ordered shafts for mine as well.  Decided to go cheap and I'm trying out the Apollo Stepless shafts.  Only $35 shipped for 11 shafts, so if I don't like them it's no big deal.

For ferrules I'm probably going to order from Cell Parts.  I've seen a bunch of stuff on ebay, but pricing isn't much different and I know the Cell Parts products are top notch.  I'm going to end up with white Lamkin 3gen grips, the apollo shafts, and then white ferrules with 2 blue rings.  I plan on repainting the dot in the cavity of the irons to match the rings on the ferrules.

Cool, let us know who this works out. I have 3gens on my other set wich I like, but I'll be going back to NDMCs.

Just my opinion, but I think black ferrules with a chrome ring look really good with this iron. It maintains the simplicity and looks classy.

Timely...I just started a thread over in the equipment forum and it got moved here and I found this thread. My black dots are worn to the nub and I have demoed j40's s56's, 09 x-forged, mp-53's and none feel as nice as the Rev's IMO so I was considering a complete refurb on mine but if there is NOS floating around I would be very interested. Is there a link or contact info for "Mr. Maxfli"?

Just got my shafts from Golfsmith so I can now finish shafting the 1,2 and 3 iron. I'm going to put S400's in the 1 and 2 iron to go with the X200's which are tipped 3/4" less than standard in the 3-pw. I've now played these for 6 rounds and what a great set of older irons. Feel is great and they set up so nice. They really make a nice second set and I won't have $175 into a brand new set of 1-sw irons.

Updated this with some pics of the first finished club.  I'm still going to mess with the paintfill, but I think they turned out pretty well.  Lamkin light blue crosslines, Apollo stepless shafts and ferrules from cell parts.

Looks good.Posted Image

Ferrule looks wider than the hosel.  Is it just the photo, pre clean-up, or ?

In case you didn't know, you can sand down the ferrule until it matches the hosel diameter, and then bring the shine back with acetone or plastic polish.

Yeah, I hadn't turned down the ferrule yet before taking these pictures.  I've since turned it down and polished it out with acetone, just too lazy to re-do the pictures :)

So excited to see folks still showing love for these.

Been in my bag for almost 4 years now

I could have SWORE there was 2 layers of copper plating under the chrome.

Im trying to track down the 2 iron, but being left handed I doubt they made a 1 iron in lefty.

As far as paint fill, they look great with no paint but black still in the "dot"

Those do look good.  My set of heads from Mr Maxfli is still in the box waiting for shafts. Looking at those reminds me what a good looking club they are, guess I'd better get some shafts rounded up. I've never done any paintfill expierments and I thought this might be a good set to try it out on, but they really do look go just the way they came.

They are simply the best clubs I have ever looked down upon at address. My set has no offset, thin topline, compact head. Makes me think I am playing some blades :D

Mr Maxfli, can you confirm there are two layers of copper in the plating process?
