Played the Long Tom Raw again today.  No reason not to keep it in the bag.  I hit just as many fairways. 12 of 14

It is more than just an extended shaft driver at 48".  It has a great weight ratio, forgiving face, flatter lie angle and it really is much better than I expected.

The Cobra guys came to my range today, which was really awesome. With regards to the Long Tom, it looks fantastic. For me, the best looking driver out there at the moment. I stepped up to the tee with that long shaft and small grip thinking I was going to slice the hell out of it because I just couldn't understand how I would be able to control a 48 inch shaft. Well it went straight, and long. Far more consistent then the NL Encore I also hit. The head just feels really forgiving, and soft for a driver. I know there are skeptics out there who would consider this club a gimmick, but just head down to a demo day and give it a shot, I'm sure you'll be very surprised at the results. On a side note, the Trusty Rusty's are so freakin' awesome! Can't wait for November....

The Long Tom sounds very nice.  I've had a bunch of different golfers use mine and really they have all been impressed by how good it looks, sounds, feels and plays.  I personally was really surprised too.  Much better than expected.

I put it in play for 18 yesterday.

It performed as expected.  Long off the tee.  Picked up about 10 to 15 yards.  Fairly high launch but long carry.  And felt very solid. I also thought the sound was good for a cobra driver.  Similar to the S3, not ear piercing.  The raw look is awesome.  The shorty grip is interesting.  Feel is on the soft side, but performed nicely.  It is just strange looking down at your hands as you grab the grip with no grip past your hands.

What was unexpected was that it was fairly consistent.  I expected to hit 2 or 3 bombs out of 14 and the rest to be wild, but the head is pretty forgiving, and I hit 9 bombs out of 12. (2 holes holes require 3 wood tee shots)  The misses weren't too bad either, 2 soft high fades that were still in play and 1 pull into the trees.  (but that happens with a regular driver.)  I was happy with the blackbird shaft.  The texture paint is cool.  It is a higher launching shaft with good feel.

If you are really wild with the driver, this probably won't be your club, but if you hit fairly consistent, you will pick up some yard with this driver.

RL,
What flex shaft have you been hitting in the raw long Tom?   What is your swing speed?  I normally play stiff flex but wondered if a flex adjustment might be needed and doubt I can get a demo to try.

I had the chance to demo Mr. Long Tom today. And all I can say is WOW!  Very high launch but the ball is in the air forever. I thought I would spray the ball all over because of the length but I was bombing it fairly straight. This club is going in the bag for sure.

I normally play a stiff flex and this plays perfect.  no need to switch flexes.   I swing around 102mph and this works great.  I just haven't found a reason to take it out of the bag.  Sure I hit a wild drive here and there, but I did that with a 45" driver too.  But still hit mostly good drives that are long.

Was it the raw version?  Any performance differences between the painted and raw?

ZERO DIFFERENCE

The raw was released (in limited #s) because COBRA wanted the public to know quickly how good the driver really is. and it is ....

Easssy is one of only 1 of 50 people ON EARTH who got the early release ... Shows ya what COBRA thinks of him & Wrx ;)

Love that they've gone back to a raw look with no busy markings- and even the repair tool is sharp and multifunctional. At least with that length and an E2 swingweight, one could cut it down do a more manageable swingweight for most (myself included). I do know for a fact that the e9 face technology works in the S2 I've played this year. It would take one heck of a driver to earn the spot. Maybe the Long Tom will...

I think it looks great! Can't wait to try one and haven't said that for a long time. At that the stock length, maybe I can hit a 9° driver again  :)

Well done Cobra/Puma! :clapping:

If the heads are the same, what accounts for the 269 gram vs. 275 gram difference between the two?  Grip?  Shaft?

Prediction: in 10 years, lots of players will be playing 48" drivers.  Heck, Walter Travis was playing 50" back in 1920.

With the advances in shaft technology, and with large titanium heads, 48" becomes increasingly easy for a lot of players to handle.  Especially for older guys who have played a lot, find the sweet spot a lot of the time, and are now suffering from shorter swings, 48" will become the norm.

An older swinger can handle 48".  A young hitter - not so much.

I don't know... 45.5" is about as long as I can go- controllably. The benefit of todays technology and designs with low and rearward CoG locatations, the spin can still be kept in check for a higher and yet straighter ballflight.

I'll try one at the stock length just to see  :)

I only have the raw, but understand that the painted is exactly the same except for the grip.  That might account for weight difference.

I was as skeptical as anyone.  I figured the 48" shaft would be a mess and only bomb once and while, but much more consistent than I expected.  Really a very good club, e9 face works and so does the BlackBird Shaft.

Even if you don't think it will work for you, give it a demo somewhere, I think you might be surprised.

The unfinished face is so you easily buff out all the errant ball marks! :cheesy:

I guess I love the unique marketing aspect. We'll see if the club perform as advertised.

I doubt any dealers will have a raw driver to demo since most aren't getting that many of the 500 made.  The finish is funny like the old DeLorean stainless steel cars.  Everytime you touch the top of the driver you see your greasy fingerprints.  Or if you get the top a little wet the wet area stays darker even after it dries, so you have to wash the whole club to get the same finish.  Or you could leave the plastic on the club head....  If 50 of these were sent out to various people, I wonder if they had numbers on them.  The one I got has a low number (low single digit).  Doesn't make sense unless the previews they sent out weren't in the run of 500.

OK I am going to real. The long tom is just an OK driver. I think it is a total gimick. I like d the new zl drivers much more than the Tommy.

The 48 inch shaft is way to long fir any real long lasting accuracy past day one. I am a cobra fan and have been playing cobra gear since the early 90s. But I am going to pass on this one.
