I don't dislike Dustin Johnson but it was ironic how a 54-Hole Golfer won a 54 hole event. Whether it's bad luck or blocked/shanked 4 irons, the man who can't close a tourney found himself in a situation where be didn't need to.  And he's laughing all the way home with a Fed Ex victory and a fat paycheck.

It's not like he can control the weather.....and he's not the first golfer to ever win a rain shortened 54 hole event..maybe they should just play it out in hurricane conditions...what a great idea.... not

No I don't advocate that at all. And I give him credit for a fantastic front 9. But it just played out nicely for a guy who has a rocky history on Sundays

Ok well Dustin happens to be a friend of mine, and let's see how well you would do in these tournaments. Do you know how hard it is to win on Tour, let alone a major? Yes, US Open last year was a choke, but the PGA was an accident. No one knew he was in a bunker. It doesnt matter if someone wins in 72 or 54 holes as long as they are on top at the end of the tournament then they win, end of story.

Not to question his accomplishments at all.  I followed him today on the course at plainfield for a few holes, and he was all over it.  Just killing it in everyway.

Someone above wrote that he isn't the first to win a 54 hole event. Does anyone know if he is the first to win two 54 hole events?  He won a shortened Pebble Beach a few years ago didn't he?

well all the players knew today was the final round...so basically he did close...5 wins in 4 years on tour, ya i'd say he has trouble winning tourneys...edit: "sarcasm"

Dustin Johnson can't close a tournament? Really? Interesting...

Seems to me that he is quite capable as he has won FOUR times prior to today.
Did he choke away a lead at the 2010 US Open....certainly
But to brand him a 54 hole player....you are streching like Stretch Armstrong!

Don't forget that the 2 shot penalty that he took on 18 at last year's PGA Championship cost him a shot at the playoff. However, he did enter the final round 3 shots behind Watney and tied with Rory McIlroy at -10.

How many players on tour have held 54 hole leads and been unable to hold the trophy after 72?

They went into today knowing it was the final round.  I'm not sure why there would be less pressure just because of which day of the week the tournament finishes on.

Apparently, he joins Phil Mickelson as the only guys to win two 54-hole events. Phil did it twice at the same event...the ol' Atlanta Golf Classic, or the BellSouth Classic, as it was officially known.

I know what you mean, but I saw today as the final round more than just 54 holes. Dustin knew it was the last round and he didn't blow it this time. A job well done by him.

Every player knew when the tournament started Thursday that there was a good chance the tournament would be 54 holes.  It's not like it was sunny and 80s Thursday and Friday and then Friday night they told everyone the tournament would be 54 holes.  Players knew way beforehand

Again with the "spoiler" blah blah...don't go on a golf site and not expect to see something about a tourney that is completed. Sometimes its on the front page of golfwrx.com, results are on the yahoo main page, msn home page, sometimes, etc...

If you're that worried about it, leave the computer and tv off. There is nothing on this site so important that you can't wait until later, especially in the freakin' tour talk section.

You know this may have been a good thing for DJ, if he wins the cup it could be great for him and golf.  As for him not being able to close on Sunday, I think he's doing a better job than all of us are, he's one leg up actually playing the tourny's every week!  Just saying

Today was the final round and every player knew it yesterday, so your entire premise immediately falls flat on its face.  Had DJ led after 36 and they couldn't complete today's final round due to weather, then your idea would have legs. As it is, this is an apples and oranges situation.

I feel DJ did pretty good. He won not to mention a cool $1,440,000 and has won $4,126,265 this year., what's not to like, you got something against winning or money. And PS, there where other golfers in this event that could have won if they would have played a little better.

If the OP has any issues with winning, maybe he should take up professional golf and show us how it's really done.

Totally agree. This is trolling at it's finest (or worst).

DJ is easily the most fun player to watch on tour for me. He's out there smashing the thing around (the 3 wood on 18 was ridiculous) and looking like he couldn't care any less, it's hilarious to see and hugely entertaining. The guy was 17 under par on the front nine... on 27 holes, that's insane.

To say he choked, knowing full well today was the final round and going out in 29 is a flat out dumb thing to say. Kuchar shot one over on the back, and missed numerous putts, why no threads about him choking?

Agree with the others, OP didn't really think this one through.  If he were the 54-hole leader and they called it before the final round THEN you may have a point.

I agree with the spoiler alert thing.  It's nice to not put info like that in your title, but if you're gonna take your chances on the site then don't venture into the Tour Talk  forum.  DUH!  I keep it to the Classifieds and Deal or No Deal and feel that's risky enough.

if i play 6 under on the front 9 of a round where i know its the final one, then i would love to have the thing that you call "problem with closing"

What's it with taking away from victories here; Rory at the US - course played to easy, Luke Donald (not so much a victory but still) - shouldn't be number one because of no majors, Scott Stalling "overcelebrating", and now DJ 'cause this event played 54 holes. In each of these examples the competition had the exact same circumstances to deal with and these guys came out on top.

Give credit where credit is due..
