I like the post and also find it strange like the OP.  I saw one of Tom Lehman's putters years ago - similar or same as the one he used yesterday to win the Schwab Cup.  Anyway, the putter I saw was beat to hell - dents and ding everywhere on a $4k+ putter (Cameron GSS Circa62 No2 Circle T).  I just think Tom Lehman is his own man who does things his own way.  He's more about results than appearances.  I respect that, but while I completely respect Tom, I just couldn't play a bag like that or treat a putter that way.

Although when I was a kid, I did scuff up my new shoes before going to school just to not get teased for having new ones.  Maybe that's it - heck I don't know.  I just couldn't play a bag like his.

Back in the day, and even occasionally nowadays, you'll find professional golfers who are more concerned with the performance of a club than they are with the freshness of the same club. It used to be very common to see players bagging old irons and wedges (ie, Betsy King's WITB link on this very site).  I'm guessing that today's aggressive marketing techniques, employed by the big OEMs, have a lot to do with that.  Going back to Tom's bag, he's played a mixed set of everything for a very long time.  And while it is unusual to me, I have yet to experience multiple wins on the PGA tour and the Champions tour...  And delving into the groove rule, I'm sure his clubs conform as many of the OEMs were making old clubs with conforming grooves for respective staffers.  Martin Kaymer is still playing a full set of TM MB TP (06' or 07' vintage I believe).  The grooves on the retail sets are not conforming but the grooves on his clubs did conform.

Ultimately it is about confidence in your equipment.  Obviously Tom Lehman has compiled a set of clubs he can trust and the fact that they are different models or from different manufacturers it immaterial. Definitely not a WRX'er.

Back in the hickory era it was quite common for golfers to have a bag full of irons from different makers; irons were hand made and even from a single maker, they could be different with regard to feel and peformance. There were no equipment contracts as we see them today and the pros would play whatever worked for them, regardless the maker. (could you imagine GolfWRX back then? "Help me choose a Mashie"or "Are tour hickory shafts superior?")

Very interesting club layout.  As you mentioned, going blades for a 4 iron and cavity for the higher clubs seems counter intuitive but who am I to argue.

Pure speculation, but I'm going to guess that for Tom there is more of a chance he will need some forgiveness and mass on the short irons because those are the clubs he's more likely to use out of the rough.  He's also probably more confident working the ball with blades, and less likely to try and work the ball with the shorter irons.

he goes with the equipment that gets him results, not the flavor of the day. plus he was taught how to "play" the game by mr flick,....... not hit x,y,z position by a typical swing coach. unique swing, but it was his and he knew how to make it work.

Damn, that's a mix bag. He needs to come in here to check with you guys about what he should be playing. People in here know what's better for Tom than he would know. How he got on tour without the guidance of GolfWRXers keyboard golf pros is stunning.
