I'm home from college for the summer which is basically the only time of year where I get to play golf whenever I want and for some reason I don't even feel like playing golf. Maybe it's the dreadful Florida heat or the fact that I work 5 days a week at the golf course and on my only days off I don't feel like going back to play, but do any of you WRX'ers ever lose the motivation to play golf? And how do you get out of this funk?

I do, easily. Golf is expensive and when I go away to school I just can't afford to play as much so I get a little annoyed and demotivated. I still go on GolfWRX all the time and toy around with my clubs, but I guess that counts.

My solution is just coming home. Ever since my dad moved out our one bonding time is golf so we go a lot and he pays for me. I guess I'll make up for that when I'm working full time and he's an old man and I pay.

I used to get that from time to time when I was playing and working as a golf professional.  It was hard to get motivated sometimes after a long week at work to go back to the course to play and/or pratice, especially if there were no tournaments to practice and get ready for.

When ever that would happen I would put the sticks away for a few weeks and do some other things that I enjoyed such as: going fishing, going to the beach, or head home after work and play some video games or whatever it was that was not golf.  I figured that half hearted practice is worthless and usually yields no benefit.

It usually worked and I had the itch to play and/or practice again within a few weeks time.

It is a hard balance between working at a golf course and playing.  If you can find the happy medium I think you will get that motivation back.  It might take longer, but if you love the game and love to play...it will resurface at some point.  Just get away for a bit.

i had been playing on and off for 10 years and after two rounds of shooting a 45 on the front and shanking the heck out of the ball on the back.  i was finished. bought a boat and fished

played a tournament for work 8 months later and got back into it, same thing happened after a few more rounds and i took a lesson instead of quitting. now things are coming together

Never work in golf if you want to play golf.  You don't want to play because you feel like your going back to work rather than playing.  If you have another course that's convenient try going there.  Or just give up playing a lot for the summer, work, and then when you leave and aren't around a golf course 24/7 it will probably come back.

Also, the heat really doesn't help.  I live in Atlanta and it disgusting outside between heat, humidity and smog.  I don't know what time of day you play, but trying going out at like 5 or 6 pm to play.  The course will be less crowded and it should be cooler out which will help you relax.  Finally try just playing 9 holes rather than 18.  Sometimes 18 can feel like it drags on if you are not in the mood for golf, but 9 is never to much.

I used to work at a golf course in the summers, and I can totally understand losing the desire to play.  When you just put in 6-8 hours there, sometimes the last place you want to be is your office...even if it is a golf course.

I also lose my drive to play/practice if I dont have any goals or a consistant game.  I do not belong to a course and dont have a regular game, I go in spurts where I will play a good bit with some players on the same skill level as me and them sprinkle in a qualifier or two in there....but then it fades.

I agree with JcO, its tough to load up and get out there when it's 95 outside.

Everyone encounters moments like that; least I have.  I always work my way through them however, because I know I will be better for doing so.  The obvious difference, those of us that make commitments and see a positive future, and those that tend to start this or that, and then quit; they can't see forward, opting to wallow in...

It's not all that different from building a serious long-term career and marriage.  There's good and bad times to growth, and every long term commitment.

I can relate - and I call that time "winter"

Seriously, even though I live in NC and could technically play year round, I do get burnt out. This usually means packing up the clubs from October through February. In October I'm burnt out, and I don't feel like playing golf. So why bother. By February the weather is warming up a bit, and then I see Pebble Beach on TV and the fire's burning again.

Sorry for the thread jack, but where are you in Walnut Creek? I live there, too! Do you play Boundary Oaks often? The course has gotten so much better with little bumpiness on the greens, new cups and new flags with prisms (for laser rangefinders). It is in very good condition right now!

No worries.  I actually used to live right by the Bart Station then we moved over off of David.  I have played Boundary Oaks a few times.  Nice track, usually in decent shape.

Glad to hear that the condition is sweet.  That is awesome.  I used to go there and hit balls up on top of the range (where the grass is).  Was my little spot to get away and hit some shots.

I am actually in Singapore right now for a little while.  In fact I am going to Update my profile right now...thanks for reminding me... :drinks:

In Illinois you only get about 5-6 months of golf weather and I count the winter as my down time :) but seriously, when you string a couple of bad rounds together, it's sometimes good to take a break and let the bad swing thoughts go for a bit. Also second that golf is expensive. It costs me anywhere between $25-50 a round depending on how well I do in the betting games. Play once a week and that's $200 in a bad month. Playing too much for me isnt an option, I have a great paying job and even I can't afford to blow that much a month. Not to mention work getting in the way 5-6 days a week!

Goodness yes.  I've entirely lost my drive to play before.  I took almost a year off.  From June 2010 to April 2011.  I was utterly burned out.  Trying to play state am stuff and just missing qualifying almost every time.  A shot here or a shot there given away and it was another long drive home with disappointment as my partner.  The game was not much fun anymore.   I had taken a few weeks off before, but never this long.  I really thought I was done forever.

I couldn't stay away forever.  I thought I could...but it dragged me back.

I'm going through it right now. I'm in the middle of lessons and my on course play has gotten way worse even though I am playing more rounds. I hate the driving range and I have to drive a half hour each way to practice my short game (which I refuse to do).

All this coupled with the most embarrassing front 9 I've had in about 3 years yesterday makes me want to just put the clubs away for a while. But I know I will be playing again this friday because there is a slim chance everything will click and I'll actually play well

I lose the desire from time to time.

I have my own business and it takes up alot of my time and energy.  Though the desire to play golf is still there, I'm pretty wiped out and just don't have the energy to play as much as I want sometimes.

i haven't lost it yet.  i played crappy today and all i want to do is go back out and play better....even though it's 110deg right now. i started playing in march when it was around 35-40deg and have been going solid every since.  i FEEL like i'm better this year, but my handicapp hasn't moved off of the 8 - 9 that i started the year with.

if i have a couple bad rounds i don't pack it in for a while....i go work on it at the range until it's fixed.
