My fiancé is moving to North Haven CT for the next year for grad school so I will be spending most of my free time down there.  Does anyone know of any decent courses in that area...maybe within 15 mins?  Any with grass ranges?  I am going to have to find some nice tracks to play down there for this summer.  Thanks.  Also, does anyone play in the CT bags events?

Not sure of your price range but the following are good options:

Yale - pricey but outstanding since the renovation.  A true classic.
Shennecosset - a bit of a drive but a good track and value
Wintonbury Hills - possibly the top muni course in New England.  Word has it Pete Dye built it for a $1 fee as a gift to the town.
Lyman Orchards - not as good golf or value as above, but doable

Private courses are also around.  Everywhere is hurting for members and you might be able to score a deal.  Waterbury and New Haven are both good.

I live on the North Haven boarder but in Wallingford technically and work at Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford. It is a public course, has an island hole, and is a fun track. The prices are very affordable and the course is in great shape.

I used to be a member at Yale but haven't played there in 10+ years.  It is a very interesting 1926 Macdonald/Raynor course that used to suffer from a lack of quality maintenance (unions and money).  I have not played it since the renovation; I'd really like to see how it turned out.

If you are restricted to public courses, you might also want to consider Great River in Milford.

I will be limited to public courses only.  Tradition Golf Club looks pretty cool albeit a little short.  What kind of condition is the course in?  The rates look reasonable.

+1 for Great River in Milford, it's 15 min away, a very nice and challenging course.  Fox Hopyard in East Haddam is 45 min away, also a superb course.

Tradition is in pretty good shape. It has gotten better and better over the years. Not the fastest greens like Great River since it isnt a high up course but is probably one of the best courses for your money and very close distance wise. It may be short but if you play from the tips it will be a challenge. There is alot of OB and Hazards. It tests your mental game as well as your skill

I'm from Wallingford near where your fiance will be going to school (QU right ?) I teach there and work at Yale. I can get you out at the Yale GC if you don't mind my company (I break balls). I'm a member at Wallingford CC around the corner from Tradition as well.

A lot of good courses within 20 minutes and some really good 30-45 min away.

Public grass ranges are Lyman on weekends (10-15 min thru the woods) and The Fairways Range 20 minutes south.

When are you coming to town ? I'll take you out with ECSU and 1-2 other WRX'ers for an intro.

Look into Laurel View Country Club in Hamden as well. I am a student a QU, and have played there a number of times. Not a bad place to play. Timberlin Golf Club is about 20-25 minutes away in Berlin also a great place to play. Woodbridge Country Club is a challenge track with wicked fast greens but decent rates can be found on golfnow.com etc. I think my dad and I paid $27 for 18 holes with a cart per person.

Ailing Memorial is in New Haven, The Tradition at Wallingford is also a fun layout, Great River in Milford is Hella expensive maybe a one time trip wouldn't be bad.

Check out CTgolfer.com as well as they have every course in CT with address, phone numbers designer, head pro, prices for all days of the week, reviews etc.

Golow,

my fiancé will be going to QU.  I would really like to get out on Yale. I will be moving her in towards the end of May.  I will keep in touch and would love to get together for a round.

Everyone else thanks for the advise and info.  I am kind of bummed because I have a membership at a course close to where I live that I got a great deal on but won't be able to use it often this season.

I'm suprised we still haven't played yet Golow living so close. I'll be playing Wallingford CC a couple times this summer and am always at Tradition so we got to get out. To the OP you got more than enough options that are close by and affordable. Look forward to playing with everyone sometime.

I'm jealous!  My wife and I played Yale frequently (she was even women's club champion one year!).  Love the course and if it's now in good shape (and original design didn't suffer during the restoration/renovation), it would now be even more of a treat to play.

I have played with Ecsugolfer many times, frankly I would rather rub sandpaper all over my eyes. He is a nice guy and all but his swing is hiteous and contagious, The Tradition is alot of fun and much more difficult than the yardage.

I grow up in North Haven.  Oxford Greens is really nice and it is rated in top 5 public in CT (about 25-30 minutes from North Haven). Laurel View  in Hamden is good track- very close to NH.
