Think he might win again this year, especially if his short game continues to improve. Stick with fade...hope he has a great season.

Per Mike Johnson's Twitter this morning:

Mike Johnson ‏@EMichaelGW
Just spoke with Gary Woodland. Said a key w/ new Callaway clubs was having Butch Harmon there during testing. "He knew what I needed."

Mike Johnson ‏@EMichaelGW
Another point from Woodland: With clubs going a few yards farther has spent the last week with his caddie getting used to the new distances.

So I sent a Tweet to Mike to ask for more details on the WITB, here was his response, lol:

Mike Johnson ‏@EMichaelGW
@Puppetmaster76 @CallawayGolf @GaryWoodland XHot Pro driver, X Forged irons. Titleist FW still in bag for now. Said X Hot "went too far."

Interesting, 710mbs to the xforged

Looks like they are putting a STEEL shaft into his XHot FW. LOL.

Nothing wrong with steel if it works for him. That's everyone was playing with not too long ago.

I wonder why  they didn't just get him a 4 wood to go as far as he expected the 3 wood to go.  I love that he hit it too far that is classic.  Yes OEM my clubs go too far. Lol.

I'm guessing height and spin were a factor with how hard he hits it. Lower lofted FW with shorter, heavier shaft to keep things down. Damn, it must suck to have those problems.... LOL.

Oh yeah, Chad Tweeted me a response and he thinks its an X100 tipped 3". Yes, 3".

There are lots of players that don't like the way metal woods look with more loft...  Not to downplay the steel shaft but raw X100 shafts are weak unless tipped so that amount of tipping isn't that crazy.  When I played X100 in my fairway wood about 6-8 years ago I tipped them 2.5" and I am nowhere near Gary's speed.

The Cally wood fw head is a really nice color gray.

Correct me if I am wrong, but tiger won the masters in 1997 with a 9* Cobra steel shafted driver @ 43.5" length.  Steel doesn't suck

Sorry I don't have the data till current

Tigers driving data - went graphite in 2004

YEAR…………………FWY %

1997…………………….68.6%
1998…………………….67.9%
1999…………………….71.3%
2000…………………….71.2%
2001…………………….65.5%
2002…………………….67.5%
2003…………………….62.7%
2004…………………….56.1%
2005…………………….54.6%
2006…………………….60.7%
2007…………………….59.8%
2008…………………….57.9%

Let’s also look at Tiger’s driving distance during these years.

1997…………………....294.8
1998……………………296.3
1999……………………293.1
2000……………………298.0
2001……………………297.6
2002……………………293.3
2003……………………299.5
2004……………………301.9
2005……………………316.1
2006……………………306.4
2007……………………302.4
2008……………………294.3

Woodland might be trying to get a little more accuracy

not saying steel is bad, but wouldn't the club have a completely different feel from graphite? but anyhow i still think thats crazy that he's hitting it so far!

17* hitting too far with a steel shaft????

No he was hitting it too far with a graphite shaft.  They switched him to steel to try and get him to a certain distance.  Funny that those with higher swing speeds (Woodland & Bubba for example) only need the loft of a 4 metal to fit their gaps.  I didn't know that he was working with a 17 degree head before but still funny that was going too far with graphite.  Any numbers of how far it was going??? I would love to know how far is too far for these guys.

+1

You'll notice it in the driver, but not so much in a FW.  My FW is still steel and distance loss is negligible.
