I would like to take the finish off and remove the paint fill on my irons, hopefully in one step.  Like I listed, I have Callaway X Prototype and X Forged irons.  I am interested in doing it myself, but need a place to start.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

You're going to have to have a shop remove the chrome finish on them.  It's a major process with some nasty chemicals.

Yeah the plating will have to be stripped off with a mix of certain acids so they wont attack the steel. I own a chrome plating and metal finishing factory in cincinnati that specializes in refinishing hydralic rods and cylinders. I started to do some work on clubs for my buddy for fun. I have stripped a few putters and they come out just fine.  All you have to do is tape off the shaft with plastic self adhering tape and only put the head of the club. Depending on chrome thickness it will take probably less than an hour to take off a half thousands of chrome.  They paint can be taken out by using industrial solvent and a firm bristle paint brush.

Thanks fellas.  I honestly thought that this could be a DIY project.  But, it seems as tho I might be over my head.  I guess I will start with just taking off the paint fill and see if I like it from there.  Thanks again.

Check online or in the yellow pages in your area for plating or chrome shops.  They will be able to dip your iron heads and remove the finish.  It's a very quick process for the platers to preform.  The heads will have to be removed from the shafts which is the only part of the process that's a hassle.

Thanks Jimbud.  That is helpful.  I might as well see if I can get my irons spine aligned when I get the heads put back on after all of this huh?  I am trying to knock out as much of this stuff in one shot over the Winter.

This is interesting. I've been looking at buying some raw irons but they are expensive.

Maybe I could get some old Hogan heads and just get them dipped?

Couldn't one remove chrome using some emery cloth and a lot of elbow grease? Not sure how much weight you'd lose but it seems like some coarse stuff would do the trick.

:cheesy:

No.  Not really.

I suppose you could do it, but you'd be at it for a very long time.

As always you could do a search that would get you some very detailed information on this two year old subject.

The problem would be corners, nooks, etc.  you would be best served finding a local stripper and having them suck the chrome off your head.

Yes on 2nd thought I like his suggestion much more. Always better to have someone else handle this sort of thing for you.
