ST. ANDREW'S, Scotland (AP) -- Former British Open champion Justin Leonard withdrew from next week's championship at Royal Liverpool on Saturday because his wife is expected to give birth within the next few days.
Leonard, the 1997 Open champion at Troon, and his wife, Amanda, have two daughters.
Simon Khan of England will take his place in the British Open field, the next nonexempt player in the official world ranking.

HOYLAKE, England -- Former PGA champion David Toms withdrew from the British Open because of back problems, an injury that forced him from the U.S. Open.
His spot will be taken by fellow American Jeff Sluman, organizers said Friday. The British Open runs July 20-23 at Royal Liverpool.
Toms, who beat Phil Mickelson by a stroke to win the 2001 PGA title, was hurt in the first round of the U.S. Open in June.

Immelman withdraws from Hoylake
Trevor Immelman
Immelman recently enjoyed his first PGA Tour victory
South Africa's Trevor Immelman has pulled out of this week's Open at Hoylake to attend the birth of his first child.
The 26-year-old, whose wife is due to give birth by caesarean section in Orlando, Florida, is currently ranked 15th in the world.
He will be replaced by first alternate Andrew Buckle of Australia.
Immelman claimed his first victory on the PGA Tour at the Western Open in Illinois earlier this month.
He had considered withdrawing last week just before leaving America for The Open but the doctor said he did not see any chance that his wife would have the baby this week.
"My wife really wanted me to come over to this tournament," Immelman said on Monday. "She knows it's my favourite."
A three-times winner on the European Tour, Immelman had been paired with Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and American Davis Love III for the opening two rounds at Royal Liverpool.

In GxGolfer's original post when I replied, he simply stated that Leonard and Toms withdrew. There was no quoting of media sources at the time.
Sorry about that, I didn't know you guys would jump on it so fast...
