Just curious to hear your opinions on what you think is the best ALL AROUND set of irons produced.  Mainly in terms of the balance between forgiveness and playability and not necessarily based on looks, offset.

My vote goes to the Ping i5s.  I mistakenly sold the first two sets I had and recently got my third.  They just plain work for me and are as forgiving as the G5s in my experience.  My GIR have instantly shot up and I have been consistently scoring below my handicap.  If I could only get rid of the dreaded one or blow ups holes and I'd be in the 70s consistently.

As far as forged, I think the MX200 are near the top.

Ping G400 Max 9*, Tour 65 stiff
Ping G400 5 and 7 woods, Alta CB stiff
Mizuno JPX 919 Forged, 4-GW, Nippon Modus 105 stiff
Mizuno S18 54/58, Nippon Modus wedge
Ping 1959 Craz-E

titleist CB 695
stronger lofts to start with
good cg position to avoid too hihg ballflight
nice sole for steeper hitters going after the ball
very good feel and sound
good workability with room for a little bit more playability

all in all my alltime favorites so far for all around
I can kick myself that I have sold my set but I have kept the 2 iron which is still in play see sig.

Wilson Staff Ci7's
A club pro i know real well here swears by them and says they blend forgivness and playability like nothing else he has ever played . I have hit his many times and i havent hit many different irons to compare by but , these are really sweet . He has been trying to talk me into getting these since i am upgrading my sticks soon but , i really want the Di11's or the Ci9's . I guess i should listen to him (after all he has been playing this game for 30 years while i have only been at it 1 year LOL) but , my inner club HO really wants a new set .

My vote would go to the Callaway X-14 Pro Series.

I think the last great Callaway "mix" set.  By mix I mean can be played by a 30 handicap or +3 handicap.

Strong enough lofts for the high handicap and enough ability to shape shots for the low capper.

It's hard to argue with the Ping "i" line as well...

i3, i5, i10, i15 all fit the mold perfectly as well.

Pretty simple - Ping Eye2. All round playability, forgiveness, durabilty and not the ugliest iron in their range either. Add to that an option of 1 & 2 irons plus pretty usuable wedges too, then you have the ultimate in "all round" irons - nothing else comes even close to compete for that title. If there has ever been an iron equally at home in the hands of a pro or the casual golfer, then the Eye 2 is pretty close to it. Game over.

Tough to argue with the eye2, but part of it's success was that it was so innovative, and not necessarily the best iron ever, just different at the time

my vote for "best" actual set would be the I5's. Though the G2's were very good too and didn't get as much attention despite being very similar in size and playability, they weren't as nice looking maybe

ping i-series irons are a great all-around line:  midsize clubheads, slight progressive offset, medium topline, and moderate forgiveness.  eye2eye2+ (my first set of irons) - i3/i3+ (blade versions are great - my current gamers) - i5 (still gets love although not my personal favorite on this list of pings...) - i10 (played by the current world #1) - i15 (won on the pga tour this year and is popular among all handicap levels).

if i had 2 votes i'd put titleist 962s in there, too:  same qualities of the i-series and great sole grind with tileist looks/feel.

IMO, I believe the Eye2+ fits the bill.  Plenty of forgiveness with enough playability.  A huge plus is given to them for durability and classic looks...

Yeah, has to be the Eye2...  Very few sets are playable from 2-lw, but those are. Outside of the wholy grail of ping...   I would have to make a case for MOST of the blended combo sets of irons.   Nike pro combo as mentioned above, Bridgestone J33's,  Mac 1025CM...   Easy long irons and blade like  short irons are tough to beat.

FOR ME, my J33C's are the best that I've played yet.  Previous sets were Cleveland TA6, Wishon 550C, Wishon 560MC and Z101s.  Good balance all around (asthetics, feel, forgiveness, etc.).  I thought the 560s would be the holy grail, but it appears that the J33 profile fits my swing better.

Right on!  Forged combo sets are where it's at.  My Mac 1025CM's will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands--amazing soft feel, equal to the legendary Hogan and Mizuno forgings, and ample forgiveness along with workability.  Still hunting for a set of Wilson Staff Progressive irons, reputed to have been deadly in the hands of Payne Stewart and Vijay Singh.

If you're into cast clubs, it doesn't get better than the Eye2 or the 845.  Not many irons are still relevant 20 years or more after their release.

Nothing like the feel of the Miura's, but they are surprisingly forgiving.
