One thing annoys me on the course - the combination of cargo shorts and an untucked shirt!  However, I would never criticize anyone for what they wear on the course.  I would never want to risk running someone off who is new to the game - especially a young person.

And no... I'm not a snob.  I just don't like untucked shirts and cargo shorts.  Our club doesn't allow denim and it drives me nuts.  When it's 30 degrees outside, I would love to be able to toss on a pair of jeans.

Depends who and where I am playing. Prefer untucked, but will do tucked when necessary.

I thought this poll was a bit of a joke too. Tucked or untucked? Really? I didn't know this was Milan at fashion week, I was under the misguided belief it was a game, a game called golf. It appears I've tripped and wandered into the middle of a discussion about the merits of a tucked or untucked shirt. I play golf to have fun. I play golf to shoot a score. I must be forgiven for not keeping constant track of whether my shirt is in or out.  If a club, regardless of name, ever tells me that I can't play with an untucked shirt, they can stuff it. I've played many fine courses around this great country of ours and never once has a remark been made about my untucked shirt. The first time that comment is uttered will be the last time I darken the door of that particular establishment. I simply don't like the way golf feels all tucked in. It's not comfortable and I don't feel free.

So you wouldn't play at ~95% of Private country clubs in America, including Augusta National, because of your shirt?

Golf shirts are designed to be tucked in.  Yes golf is a game but it's a gentleman's game.  Gentlemen tuck their shirts in.

This is my first post on this forum. I am fairly new to the game; started lessons/playing in July.

I start out tucked and usually try to keep it that way. Sometimes the shirt comes out after a few holes, so I just pull out the rest.

Ha ha, some of the comments on this thread! I shouldn't laugh really but "judging" someone by how he wears his shirt for a game of using sticks to hit a ball into a hole.

What about the ladies?

Tucked in ~80% of the time, the rest, untucked.

I play 10 rounds a month, 7-8 of those at private clubs that require you to have your shirt tucked in... I have no problem with this at all (even though I'm a bit on the "chunky", I'm equally comfortable tucked in / untucked). The other 2-3 rounds, I play at Muni's that do have a dress code but don't enforce it at all, so untucked is not frowned upon and I go either way depending on how I'm feeling that day and what the playing conditions (if it's windy or too hot, etc.).

Tucked, 100% of the time. I work at a course, so it needs to be tucked and i need to look neat and proper. I don't want to look like a hobo. How many guys on the PGA Tour are untucked? None. Not even John Daly!

Tucked with a belt!  Part of the game, but I know who pays the bills so wear what you want as long as you aren't making a mockery out of the course and game I love.

If I'm wearing pants, then it's always tucked.  If I'm wearing shorts, it depends on the club and the 4 some.

The rules at my club state men must tuck in their shirts on the course, women can go un-tucked. Honestly it is one of the least snobbish clubs I have ever been too.  A big feature of the the club is the pool, with a lot of families and kids, so there is an endless stream of people in bathing attire running around, they strictly enforce the dress code on the course to keep a separation between the pool and the golf.  Personally I like it that way, but if I am on a public course...I could care less as long as you are wearing some sort of shirt.

Now that would be a sight!  Playing golf in flip flops and Speedos!

Untucked if wearing shorts which is most of the time.

Tucked if wearing pants.

Can someone explain which shirts look better untucked? I don't think I've ever seen a golf shirt that looks better when it's untucked.

When you show up at a club to play golf, you are supposed to wear a collared shirt and tuck it in.

There is never a time that untucked is appropriate.

For those of you who say it has no impact on me. Well it does. If I bring a client to a nice course and the group behind us pulls up to the tee looking like crap, it makes me look bad as I'm the one who invited my client to what is supposed to be a nice course.

But this isn't just a golf problem. I see it at nicer restaurants. People no longer put on nice shirts (asking them to wear a jacket is out of the question apparently). I've been to many nice places only to have the table next to us on t shirts and shorts.

Right on.There is literally one guy at my club that always walks around with his shirt untucked. He sticks out like a sore thumb and just looks like a Di#K.

I confess, that at age 66 my shirt is usually untucked, but I always wear long pants!  The only thing that offends my sensibilities on the golf course, is grown men in shorts!!  I played competitive tennis for 40 years, and I never wear shorts in public, unless I am playing tennis!!!!!!

I'm always tucked in to start the round, but circumstances could change if it's extremely hot or I've made a mockery of the first few holes.

To me, the tucked looked is much more polished - unless you wear a pullover or half zip.  Those fare well untucked.  Also, Golf wear for me, tends to be a size to big and overly long in length so I almost always have to tuck.  The times I don't tuck is if the shirt is shorter and has the tendency to come out during play.  I don't like the look of, it's been tucked for 9 holes and now out and wrinkly...that doesn't sound very good.

I have advised more than one member of our club to have their guests tuck in his shirt.  Untucked for women is one thing, for men it is completely unacceptable and should be grounds for dismissal from any self-respecting course/club.  This is akin to wearing a hat backwards, or askew, or wearing jeans on the course.

And, on that note, do we really need polls for questions that don't need to be asked?  Tucked v. untucked?  Jeans?  Really?  How about, are white socks good with black pants?  Or, cargo shorts v. sweat pants. v. man capris.  Oh the insanity of it all!!!

Better question: what about sweaters?  Tuck them in?  Leave them out?  Depends on the sweater?  (I'm in the third camp.)
