I'm saying that I think there's a chance that he was play a one off version that started life as a forged flatback and that looked just like that. That's how the Miurfields and 20ths were born, and I bet all of the Mac blades. The photos, etc. wouldn't address that. He was definitely playing a club that looked like that one in '78 including at St Andrews.
There's also the ad that says Jack won 20 majors with MacGregor forgings, but I don't put much stock in the ads.

Jack played cast irons designed by David Graham with Jack's tweaking. Graham said he defied anyone to tell the difference
CHARLEY PENNA
Charley, as usual you've provided the definitive answer. Thanks!
Re: that ad about Jack winning all of his majors with MacGregor forgings, truth is he only won one major in that 1976-79 stretch, the 1978 British Open. Didn't he have a deal with Slazenger to play their clubs in the British Open in the 1960s and at least early 1970s? He doesn't mention Slazenger specifically, but on Page 52 of Golf My Way (published in 1973) he does mention having contracts to use clubs other than what he normally used in Europe and Australia. Don't know if this was still going on in 1978 or not.
Regardless, I just knew Jack wouldn't say he used something when he didn't.
