Any Maui Jims with their HT (High Transmission) lenses.  Much higher clarity because of the polarization, enough light reduction on bright days, enough transmission on overcast days.  They never leave my eyes (OK, maybe at twilight!).

Could you please tell us what sunglasses you were using before?  I have typically used a 10% lens (very dark) blue Costa Del Mars; OR Gray Maui Jims which are a little brighter.  I recently realized that I need more light transmission.  I see the HT's are about 30% and wondering if they are too bright (too much light) compared to a 10% lens?

Thank you.

I've used a bunch of different pairs (Ray Bans, Smith Optics, Native Eyewear), including another pair of Maui Jims with their Neutral Gray lens, which also has 10% light transmission.  I actually prefer the HTs to the Neutral Grays, even when it's extremely bright.  I suppose if I had to contend with high reflected light (ie desert, ocean reflections), I might want the darker lenses, but for the vast majority of the time, the HTs are just fine.

Excellent....and do they help to highlight the contours of the green better than the gray MJ lenses?   have you tried the bronze or rose lenses?

Thanks for your help.

I've tried neither the Bronze nor the Rose lenses, so I can't comment.  I tend to prefer lenses that don't make my surroundings look too weird!

The HTs are close to neutral but definitely have a slight tint.  To be honest, I'm not sure I've found a significant change in greens perception; I do know that they don't detract from my recognition of contouring (unlike the 10% Neutral Grays, which significantly reduce contrast except in the very brightest of conditions).  Then again, I play more than half of my rounds at my home course and know the putts before I even get to the green....

I have been told by more than one optomotrist that Maui Jim's are the best you can buy as far as clarity, protection, and lack of distortion.  I love mine, I can't play golf without them anymore.

Nanowire 2.0 with Polarized VR28 iridium lenses.

I work at an eyeglass shop, and have tried everything Maui has to offer, and I still like these the best.

I really like the G30 on the putting green, but for a hot summer day there is too much light transmission for me.

The drivewear lenses that someone mentioned earlier are really cool if you can get a shop put them in for you. They are yellowish in lower light, but are transition lenses so they go a dark brownish color out in the sun, and they are polarized.

Have you used them for putting?   The website testimonials and the research on the web - people rave about them.  There are a few that talk specifically about how much better you can read a green.....was that your experience too?

Thanks.

I have had my Drivewears for a year and a half. The raves are not understated... this is the best outdoor lens I have had, and I have tried a lot (Rudy Proj, Oakley, Maui Jim, Ray Ban, etc.). They get light enough for indoors so when I leave the house it is the only pair I need.

As for polarized, there are different types, and different levels of quality. I have had polarized Oakleys and frankly there is no comparison. I used to occasionally loose the ball in the sky, especially when it was overcast. Not any more. Contrast is very good, reminds me of my old Ray Ban Ambermatics in low contrast light, but color is more accurate. On the greens, I see grain better with my non-polarized Oakleys, but I see slope better with the Drivewears. Plus you can easily just tilt your head 45° and you will see the grain 'pop'.

I will absolutely do these again when it is time and I have never done that with a sun lens before.

Oakleys seem to be the clear standout - are people wearing polarized lenses with these? Is there a benefit/downfall to polarized?

Sundog for the versatility of use on and off the course.  I find wearing the oakley XLJ's off the course odd for me.  The Sundogs at rockbottom depending on style were great ..the lens variations for low light or hazy overcast skies were great in their Smoke lens.  Off the course without glancing too long maybe as good looking as a pair of cool Spy eyewear.  I recall buying all 3 colors available from rockbottom at a great price.

Just got Maui Jim Banyans -- tortoise with HCL bronze lens and am loving them!

Would have considered the new HT lens, but wanted the tortoise frame versus the black frame...wish you could get all their lenses in all their frame colors.  Rose wasn't bad, but I'm going to use these for everyday as well and did not want to look at the world through rose colored glasses...Posted Image

I also just got the HCL Bronze lenses in the MJ Kapalua's.  A little brighter for my eyes and better ability to see the putting line than the same glasses in gray.

I have the Kaenon Kabin with Copper lenses. They are the best lenses I have ever had for golf. Kaenons can be hard to find, but are well worth the effort. Once you try them you will be hooked.

I bought a Tifosi Logic set with their three recommended "golf" tints for about $35 on ebay and gave them a test out on the course.  Dark "typical" tint is very good for clear bright sunny days.  On overcast days the other two tints are very good at brightening up the view and provide increased contrast in grass colors.  If you play on Bermuda grass the light tint lenses bring out the browns more and provide a helpful contrast.  Great to have quick and easy interchange on lens.

No miracle cures with golf sunglasses just a matter of personal choice and on reading greens in seems for me to be most helpful to use the sun-glass view and then take a look without sunglasses.  I think everyone is different and if there were and Consumer Reports type of tests for golf sunglasses I doubt the results would apply to everyone.

Coming from boating I do know that polarized lenses and glasses I have for boating do not work as well on the course as the Tifosi set up. Wear the Costa Del Mars on the water.

Any real sources of info out there where lense color has been tested? The thread is full of recommendations but only a few comparsions.

In general - I personally tested and found what worked for me.  Amber, Gray, Green, Pink - were my orders of preference from best to worst.   However you personally need to tweak the amount of light transmission (brightness) and polarization - to fit your own needs....at least I think so.  :)

I tried to find definitive sources to tell me what lenses are "best" - and frankly I couldn't find any.  I went by my own eyes simply b/c my eyes disagreed with a lot of what was printed.  I tried many of the non-polarized/polarized gray/rose/amber/green lenses - and bought/sold/returned several different pairs of glasses.  Interestingly - glasses that I would NOT have recommended about 5 years ago - I would recommend now....not b/c the glasses are better, but b/c my vision/eyes have changed.  My eyes used to prefer a very dark gray tinted polarized lens.  I am used to a 9% gray polarized blue coated "fishing" lens.  Many people don't like these for golf - specifically b/c they are too dark.  But I liked them for all-around use and golf.   For golf I evaluated them for 1) ability to see the contours on greens and "see the putting line" enhancement; 2) ability to track the ball in flight and find it in the rough; 3) overall comfort.

My goal was to replace them with a slightly brighter lens that I could wear all-around.  I tried gray, amber, green and "golf specific" lenses.  Polarized Maui Jim/Costa Del Mar; Oakley +Red; G30; G20; Gold Iridium; Blue Ice; Bolle EaglevisionII (amber/brownish); and Callaway Neox and Neox II (greenish/yellow).   AGain I liked in order - Amber, Gray, Green, Pink.    Amber lenses across the brands always seemed to make putting easier than gray.  I am willing to give up some color trueness, for enhanced vision of contours.    I prefer polarized to non-polarized.    The green lenses are nice - but a bit too bright.  Polarization is not needed with the green lenses as they seem to cut glare differently. I did not like the Rose colored - it looked odd to me, particularly needed time to readjust my eyes after taking them off...no better visibility playing golf or putting; and I wouldn't wear them all-around.

In order of my preference for both golf and all-around use:

1. Amber/brownish polarized (MJ; Oakley and Bolle)
2. Gray polarized (Bolle, Oakley, MJ)

3. Green yellow non-polarized (Callaway Neox; MJ's HT lens)
4. Rose/Pink (MJ, Oakley)

In the end - I went from a 9% gray lens to a 15% amber lens.   Amber made putting easier even among different brands; vs Gray different brands.  Green/yellow and Pink let in too much light through the lens; and/or the pink hue was distracting to me so I didn't think I could use them except on a golf course, and only in low light conditions.     I did a head to head test of MJ Bronze vs MJ Gray - and played over several rounds and several days.  Bronze wins by a nose b/c the putting was easier.

Final thought:  I still say the Costa Del Mar Cinnamon colored lens is the best lens I've tried FOR PUTTING and seeing the line.  If you're a person who ONLY uses the glasses for putting then those are the ones to try - but they are crap in terms of seeing ball flight, or finding the ball in the rough! :)

Good luck and hope this helps.
