I have a 1977 MacGreggor VIP 4 iron that I carry in my bag for the fun of it.  I have the 2010 Golfsmith version of the VIPs. So I thought it would be cool to carry a club that is as old as me and matches my set.

I love hitting it on the range.  I tend to over draw it compared to my other irons but its barely shorter than my modern VIP 4 iron.

Identical to this 5 iron

Updated my bag this year to 714 ap2s but until then I had been playing DCI golds 2-pw for the past 10 years. Clubs are as old as I am.

20 year old ISI coppers here with S300 shafts. Purchased them two years ago. The only relatively newer irons that I would consider gaming would be a set of Callaway 2013 X-forged.

Bladehunter, those ISIs are looking very sharp. I've always liked the wavy/lumpy back of the sole on those. Looks like it was made out of second generation Terminator metal - live liquid steel. I digress. Playing (I've never 'gamed' anything in my life. Sorry, gamers.) Cleveland TA5s for thirteen years allowed me to appreciate great forgiveness in a club that looked like a stretched-out Eye 2. Which is basically what it was. The only thing I didn't like about them was I thought the long irons looked too long for their height. Pretty much any Ping G series club until the 25s looks that way too, at least to me.

Hit 'em hard, they'll land somewhere.

Just played my 1200 GE's again today after using Ping S56. Honestly, I play better with the GE's. the blade must be half the size of the S56!!!!  They just are easy to hit, feel light, and I rip through the ball with them. They have a reg flex shaft so they're whippy. I really may throw DGS300's that I use w Pings on the GE's. I burn a few of my friends who use updated clubs with the GE's.

Ah, the good old days.

Never owned 845s but hit several played by friends (I played Hogan Edge GS in the 845s day) they were true innovation.

Had VHLs, those were sweet...just another set I shouldn't have traded (but if kept everything I'd need a storage place, closets are full).

I've replaced everything in my bag accept the Cleveland Quad Pro irons I got from my dad. Besides sentimental reasons since he passed away a few years ago, I've always liked the distance and accuracy I've gotten from them since he gave them to me.

Golf Digest? Paid shills OEM marketing. Their downfall in the article is showing what 'old' clubs are worth. If you have old Hogans, Wilsons, Pings etc. why would you 'trade' them for peanuts. Other point they TOTALLY miss is some folks, like many of you above, love their clubs, play well with them and are well, simply happy. I have I20 Pings but the old Hogans 'Apex 99 and Eye2s still get a fair amount of time. I'd NEVER let those clubs go for a lot of reasons.
Very interesting to see who has what and why they like them. Enjoyed.

Recently bought back a set of taylormade 320's on the cheap from friend.....didn't think much of it.

Being a lefty but also wrx'er, I'm ALWAYS in the market for that perfect set of irons to re-invigorate my poor play as of late...gotta be the clubs right?

Well after considering several sets, I've come to realize that these irons make sense for my game AND wallet. The constant weight Flighted rifle shaft is in my preferred class (110g) slightly bigger head size than my vr pro combos and more forgiveness in short irons with a consistent flow and feel.

Now being a golf snob, I'll have to get over the non-forged aspect.....reason I got rid of before......now ,I'm after pure performance without going to a chunky GI club....these look eerily similar to rsi tp in size and while not forged feel as good while being 1149.00 cheaper!

I just shot my best sim round ever of -2 with a set of mid 90's Spading Tour Edition CB's that I put in the bag in place of my 712 CB's, I may leave them in there for a bit now lol. I should also mention, I got them off of Kijiji(craigs list of canada) for $40 :)

Same situation as you. Have i20's as my "modern" irons and '99 Apexs (and Wilson Staffs, GR Tour Grind Axials, and even a set MT Colokroms) in the "classic bag(s).  Hit the Apex's seemingly as well as the Pings even though there are those you think it's foolish because I do not have the necessary swing speed (whatever that's suppose to mean).   I'm just thankful that there are those who DO trade their old(er) clubs in or list them for sale.  Allows me to pickup and try various golf clubs at significantly reduced expense or stupid cheap.  The GR's were purchased for > $10, the Colokroms > $6.

I suppose there are many avenues to find enjoyment of the game. Shooting the lowest possible round, with the newest and most technologically advanced set of clubs, in a tournament or competitive situation is one.  One that seemingly (with this being the operative term) many here at the WRX persue.  There those that wouldn't be caught dead with anything less than the latest and greatest around the clubhouse.  Ego?  We all know them. Or those like myself and others who have discovered, particularly with irons, that there really isn't a hell of a lot of difference in irons from 20+ years ago and those current. Furthermore, it's all about the swing anyways, or so I've been told.  The Classic Pings, Hogans, Macs, etc. have stood the test of time for a reason. Superior design and execution.

How did the greats of the game ever manage to play with those clanky old sticks?  Proud to say I'm an OEM's worst nightmare (thanks to a number of folks over in the Classic forum).  I've figured out their ruse.

Still have a set of Ping Zing 2's that I take out now and then, plus the matching BeCu wedges (S2, S3, and L). Sweet clubs, and they're just over 20 years old. If my game is really on, then I appreciate the extra precision my MP-64's offer, but on an average day I don't think it would make any difference to my score which set I used.

I couldn't put my TA 845's in the basement, so I brought them to Florida last fall and they have become my southern set. When we go back up north in the spring, I'll be playing my new Mizzy's 850's.

How about a Ping Eye 2 wooden 4-wood?  I used it in high school, most accurate club I've ever hit, shot mid-70's in state tourneys back then, now I shoot in the 70's just a few times a year now w/ the long bomber drivers :-(
