The bag I bought from a local junk shop had some clubs in it, They are George Nicoll "autograph" blades (8 iron is missing) with autograph 1,3,5 woods. Anyone know anything about them? I read that nicoll stopped making clubs in the 80s. thge putter is a "marksman" by dunlop.

Hi mate,
I suppose you have googled George Nicoll? I can't find much about this model but there seems to be a good amount about the club maker. From looking at the clubs I would guess they are 60's.

Christian,
I "G"'ed Mr Nicoll and it appears that he made some good clubs early on. The Irons are tiny and look really thin, will give them a polish and see how they come up. I would imagine they are forged Stainless steel so should be pretty soft, grips are golf pride "pro only" and in good nick. I hopefully have a game on sunday so might take the 6 iron along.

guys the George Nicoll Company is now otherwise known as www.standrewsgolfco.com. I bought a set of Henry Cotton Nicolls a while back and contacted them for some info regarding them. Excellent response from them, if you send a photo of the iron i'm sure they will help!

Great pick up for a tenner btw! they look 1940's into 50's to me at a guess!

I emailed the guys at St Andrews and here is their reply:

The irons you have bought are from the late 1950’s, around 1958.

George Nicoll used the Autograph name on a number of different sets from the 40’s onwards including some with Henry Cotton’s name.

So, a bit older than first thought, well worth keeping and repairing the Woods (to the best of my ability). I just need some plastic to make some new inserts, anyone have any ideas?
I took the iron to the range yesterday, Boy those old school lofts make a difference, 6 iron popping up like a modern 9 iron!!!
