When everyting is working great all the way till the flatstick comes out and I get a case of the three putts....Happened to me today..Very frustrating to consistantly hit good shots from tee to green and then not be able to roll a good putt....To add insult to it I drained a nice 15 footer on 18 to end my round.
I was 1 over after 13 today. I missed a 3 footer for par on 14. I bogeyed the next 4 holes and fell apart from there.
When my putter confidence is shattered, I have NO Chance.
On the other hand, I have so much confidence with the driver it's scarry. Today I played Draw, Straight, Cut, Baby Fade, .... Seems almost automatic now.
Of course 1 fade turned into a huge slice and 1 draw turned into a snap hook (Hit a tree and stayed in thank god) but the ball is doing what I want off the tee.
Answer to your question though is missing a short putt for sure.
Like the OP said, hitting a good drive and coming up short (or just off the green). For me, I think it's when I miss the green just enough to have to chip. Sh*nk city!
Last time out it was when I made my fourth birdie in the first six holes and my brother said "your two under." hooked the next three drives and ended up six over for 18. Started thinking again! darn it.
Hitting a provisional OB . Even if I find the original ball, it's a tough blow to the ol' confidence.
And then of course there is: feeling your ill-timed morning deuce start to come to fruition, right after passing the only facilities on the front 9 -- pretty distracting until you can resolve it!
The first tee shot...solid, and I'm usually good to go.
First few putts. Same as driver...if I'm solid early, I'm usually okay. If I miss a short one or three putt early, bad things can happen.
Confidence is hugely important in golf...probably even more so for me than the general population. I tend to peak and fall dramatically with confidence.
My head is the worst thing for my confidence in a tournament round. I don't think when I'm out playing practice rounds, but come tournament time I do all sorts of thinking instead of just playing.
You ever stand on the first tee right before you're about to tee off and think about how unatural the entire concept of golf is? Yeah, not a good idea
hitting a fat shot. putting your power into something, then getting jerked back and watching the ball go 30 yards. Most frustrating thing I can experience.
When somebody I haven't played with since I started getting serious about the game makes a comment about how much better my swing looks...I immediately start thinking technically about the swing changes I have made or am making, and my hole ability to confidently focus on the target goes in the tank.
1 - racing a birdie attempt by then missing the return/missing 3 footers in general
2 - making bogey from 150 yards in
3 - getting ahead of myself after a good front 9 (3 over or less) then taking double on the 10th, screws the rest of the round up (i do this far too often)
I have a son that has had some problems. So for me in the past it has been, a call from school that I dreaded, telling me to come get him. He is suspended from school. But in the past year or two, its been. This is the xxxxxx police dept, do u want to come bail your son out of jail.
Try taking that to the golf course, and having confidence over a putt. Waiting on a phone call.
Going to 2 over after 3, getting it back to level a few holes later, knocking it close on the next, thinking 'good chance to get to -1' and then 3 putting.
Hitting a great drive on the first tee, and then sticking it to about 25 feet past the hole, and 3 putting the first hole . Or worse, missing the green and a horrible chip/pitch, and the 3 putt, double bogey the first hole.
Our first hole where I play is about as easy as its going to get. Its a straight away, kinda narrow, and 325 yards. There was a period of time where I would make no worse than par, and usually birdie it about 45% of the time. Cool nice start -1. Head to the next tee, a narrow dogleg right (I only draw the ball). Step up feeling confident, and then hit it OB, and then hit the provisional OB, 5 off the tee, 6 on, 2 putt 8. %&^# ME!!!!!!! Then finish finish w/ a 40 .
For me the drive off the first tee seems to set the tone for the whole round. If its not in the fairway, mentally it puts doubt in my swing and the rest of the round swing mechanics creep into my mind on allmost every shot. Its a hard habit to get over, happened to me today and the drive was only just off the fairway, i was even telling myself to stop thinking about swing mechanics because im aware of the problem but i could not do it.
The shank, takes just one then I am dead for the rest of the round.
+1 i've never had one in a round and then recovered. Total card wrecker
Yesterday in a tournament, I had a shot I had to hit a cut under a tree, sounds much more difficult then it was, well i shanked it, hits a small cactus bush on the edge of the ob stays out, mind u this is the 2nd hole and i was ready to cry haha! end up making a triple and fought hard and recovered!!!! shot 76 (+4) and was proud after the ole shank appeared... only time thus far, hoping to not worry about more shanks in the future..
having to hit 40+ yard 3rd shot on par 4 constantly because i have to punch out into the fairway.... the fact that i hafta punch out means my swing is not working well that day hence losing confidence. i was gonna say 3 putts but now i am just used to them.
Missing a short putt kills me. I'm usually a good putter and have good skills around the greens.
I've worked really hard at the mental side of the game and focusing on the task at hand, not worrying bout bad shots.
So when I really give away a stroke, or two , it screws my round up.
The tournament that a lot of the guys around here look forward to is a 3-man best-ball, we draw the teams randomly the night before and have a good calcutta. Just enough money to put some pressure on. 2 years ago, we played in the final group and coughed up the lead in the last 3 holes, which included me 3-whacking from 4o feet on the 2nd lasy hole when both of the other guys on my team were out of the hole. Tied for 3rd and lost in a play-off so we went from thinking how we were gonna spend the money to getting nothing.
I used that as motivation all year to double down on my practice and dropped 4 shots off my index, shot a new personal best and in general felt I'd really improved. Many of the better players here have told me my game is sure getting better!
This year, I ended up on a team with one of the best players in town, but we had a poor first round so dropped out and went in the "B" side, which still has good money up for grabs. The 2nd round was windy, but we went deep on the front 9, which was the 4th thru 13th holes of our round, so we knew we were going to be in contention to win the "B" side. I made a bomb for a net eagle and we were on a roll with 4 to play. Then I 3-putted from 25 feet, stuffed a 7 wood in tight on the next hole, missed that putt, hit an awesome hybrid out of the tall rough onto the green the next hole, 3-putted, then missed an 8 footer for par on our final hole. We tied for first and won in a playoff, but I could just feel it slipping away after the first 3-putt. I had no more than 6 feet for my birdie putt after the sweet 7 wood shot into the wind, and even after all 3 of us read it. I KNEW I was going to miss it. After 30plus holes playing some of my best golf ever in tournament conditions, the stupid 3-putt and thoughts of "same as last year", I could barely draw the putter back to hit the putt.
I know I have nothing to be ashamed of, after all, it came down to my shots to carry the team, even tho I'm the mid range handicap on the team.
Until I finish strong and win something outright, those 3-putts will haunt me. I could go shoot 77 a dozen times and drop my index to single digits for the first time, but the doubt is always gonna be there.
Hi Newb here and I thought the opportunity to explain my lousy scores was too good to pass up. I played a quick 9 with my young son today. Now I'm in NE Ohio, we don't get too many chances to drive to the course as the neighbors hang Christmas lights. Per usual the first few holes I am more concerned about his quivering lip and slumped shoulders after he fats shot after shot (kids don't listen) and i even straight shanked a SW from like 87 yards. I mean this was SQUARE on the center of the hosel.
I got it together on holes 5-9. On in Reg on every hole with nothing more than 15 feet left. I made one of them and I 3 jacked it twice from 11 feet. my 11 year old son was telling me how much I suck as he pulled his 16 foot 2 putt from the jar. (Not really saying it, but i know what he was thinking!)
So like many others here, It's all always about the flat stick. One bad hole on the green and it just sticks with you "Oh, this putt looks remarkably similar to the one you missed so badly on the last hole". VERY hard to stop that avalanche. Good topic!
It has to be the Chinese laterals. I start out each season progressing up to the point of really solid ball striking with the irons, really going down after the ball. Then BOOM there it is the unexpected hosel rocket. It then takes me about a month to get over it, although the thought lingers longer.
