Hi there,

A few days ago I picked up a set of these on ebay comprising 1,3,4,5 woods. They have X-100 shafts and the grips are the green 80s style victory type. On the top where it says victory, it also says "Dunlop". A couple of pics of the driver here.

They are currently residing with another very kind WRX member as the seller couldn't/wouldn't ship overseas. But they will be making there way to the UK with a few other persimmons and a couple of old blade sets shortly. I think these must be the Dunlop Seve Ballesteros Limited edition persimmon set that was mentioned briefly in one of the other persimmon threads but more than that I don't know. Anyone recognise these at all and have any idea when these were released or have any other info?

Cheers,

BG

I just found these on ebay which look like they may be the companion iron set:

Sadly I won't be paying $1,499 for them though!

Very nice.

From what I remember, the woods date back to sometime in the late 1980s or very early 90s. The driver is a nice bit of kit, clearly inspired by a Joe Powell driver that the great man played for much of the mid/late 1980s with the jigsaw sole plate and the insert design that mimics the aluminium firing pin of that particular club.

Those irons are certainly a very nice set, but a grand when the seven-iron's misssing is a bit rich, pristine nick or not.

One of our local shops had a complete set on display, still in the wood display case, brand new. It was his pride and joy and have been on display as long as I've been going to his shop.

The Maltby book has information on the entire set. I believe 1-SW with 4 persimmon woods. I'll have to look it up later. I think 999 or 1000 sets were made total.

Thanks guys - the info is much appreciated. Actually it was the Joe Powell factor that originally caught my eye as I have the driver, smoker and 5 wood with that firing pin and jigsaw sole plate as Mat describes.

Snap.

Mine's even black with a black insert for the full Seve/Sandy Lyle groupie effect and is a treasured posession that my father bought for me when I was 14. I still have an occasional knock with it now just for the fun of it.

Off topic a little but the JP's came with a bonus freebie thrown in of a PBG with a fiberglass type insert that I hadn't seen before - plays nicely though I am not fond of the look.

Another nice bit of timber there. I've never hit one of those but it looks nice enough at address. Similar to my own JP. When those Dunlops arrive your persimmon collection will be well into cap doffing territory.

I keep toying with the idea of getting my hands on few really desireable persimmons myself. A nice Harry Busson would be a nice thing to have, a Wood Brothers Texan is another on my list, and I'd like to get my mitts on a nice M85W too as a bit of a Faldo curio. One day I'll set aside some funds and make a proper effort to track them down.

Are those the infamous Dave Ballister woods you mentioned on another forum brok? They look great!

As for the Seve irons, I think I've seen the Slazenger version of the Seve blades on ebay.co.uk a couple of months ago for < GBP 200. My guess is you'll have more of a chance finding them on ebay.co.uk then on ebay.com

I caught a small snippet of the item on Seve on the BBC last week, where they were in Seve's bag room and they were admiring his Tony Penna (3-wood?) and his collection of gold Ping putters. Excellent stuff!

Hi Mat,

Thats what I did with the help of some WRX members here based here in the US who may wish to unmask themselves at this point :clapping: . Its been trememdous fun - here are some pics of various clubs I have picked up along the way.

Some of which I havn't seen in person yet, like the Seve's, but hope to be able to soon.

Cheers, BG

Hi J,

Yes these are the famous Dave Ballester woods! For those who havn't a clue what we are on about the original listing could have been, um...more accurate!

http://cgi.ebay.co.u...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Karma prevents me from laughing to much about this as that will probably result in them being crushed in transit!

Yes I saw the Seve program as well, loved the bit with the Penna 3 wood that was used out of the fairway bunker in the Ryder Cup. Have put it on DVD with some other goodies - sadly postal strike means I will have to wait until next week before sending.

Cheers, BG

There was a Slazenger Seve iron available in the late 80s, around the time of his Lytham win, I think. I had a set then. They were a real blade.

Came with True Temper stiff shafts, might have been Dynamic rather than Dynamic Gold.

Is there anyone out there with a Set of Slazenger Seve Blades, circa 1990-1995. I sold my set a few years back and I have not played in that time. I'm interested in getting a set again. I enjoyed their form and feel.

They were quite rounded in form and high chrome finish. I'm unable to find any photo's of them to identify the set I'm looking for (the link below shows a Dunlop branded set, not dissimilar to the ones I'm seeking) I'm looking for gently used, not such a set...

Regards

"loved the bit with the Penna 3 wood that was used out of the fairway bunker in the Ryder Cup."

I have never been able to find video of that shot, which sounds like it may well have been the greatest golf shot ever struck. Does anyone know if the video exists?

Luckily you dont have to pay such a ridiculous price! Check out this auction, for the same irons, 1-SW. I know the seller, and he is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.. (I have no interest in this sale and am just posting for informational purposes!)

Would he ship these to the UK? Could knock the 681s out the bag :)

I saw that $1499 Set of Ballesteros Irons/Woods on eBay. Crazy price....don't pay it.

I bought a set of Dunlop Seve Ballesteros Sig. Irons/Woods late in '09. Numbered. On eBay from a seller in HAWAI'I. I paid $500 for the NEW set ! Still in plastic.

This is a nice set of irons. Irons actually have the "Pins in the Hosels" that you typically find in the HOGAN clubs. Great set of clubs, but don't pay more than $500 for a set.
