I go to a small private school who doesn't offer many sports including golf. My school just joined with another very expensive private school. They used to have the #1 golf team in the state. I shoot in the low to mid 80s sometimes a 79. I have never played highschool golf before so i was wondering what it is like.

Usually nine holes stroke play 6 would play and low 4 scores count. They match you up with the same seed. #1 from your school will play with #1 from the other and so on. Good Luck.

Do any of you think I could even make the varsity team with those scores. I will tell you about my game. I hit my driver 270 but some times I can blast it around 300 to 320. My iron game is not that good with the 5 and 6 iron. But with the rest of the irons i am money with them. The wedge is where my strength is. Anything 105 and in is good. Putting could use some work (but who doesnt need to work on putting). Thanks a lot guys.

Honestly 79-80 isn't going to be good enough to make a state's #1 team most of the time. If you want to golf go learn to get around what you've got problems with... maybe get a 5 hybrid if you want, 6 iron shouldn't be hard to hit so just work on that. Go spend time on a practice green.

This is incorrect.

6 play, low 5 count. High school matches are only 9 holes. The coach matches you up however he/she feels like.

Your coach might decide to play a few high school tournaments. In this case, those are usually 36 holes or 54 holes, depending on the tournament.

At the end of the season there is usually a tournament for all the teams in a certain geographic area.

High School golf is a lot of fun. Take it seriously, but at the same time enjoy it.

It varies by state, in Colorado we play 5 count 4 in 18 hole rounds. Regionals and state are play 4 count 3. High school golf is awesome! You miss school and you play golf, what more could you ask for?

Yea, in Kentucky, we play 6 count 4 for 9 hole matches. I was the 6 man this year as varsity. Sometimes it fluctuated so that i became 5 or 4 man. In INvitational's we played 5 count 4, and those were 18 hole. Regionals and are 5 count 4 18 hole and State is 36 Hole, and the only teams that goe are the top 2 from the region. also, the top 2 individuals go regardless of how their teams do. And if the matches or invitationals are far away, we get to miss school.

As Sam said it depends on where you live.

My son has played for the last three years on his HS golf team. The vast majority of his matches are played using the Stableford system (you get so many points for a birdie, par, and bogey). He has a lot of fun, gets to play a variety of courses, some of which are private. Usually they take the top eight scores.

It doesn't matter how far you hit the ball, but how you score. My son hits the ball a long way but at some of the shorter courses he'll just tee off with a 5-iron to get it into play, especially on courses he has never played before.

He has found he plays better golf when he is competing than during casual rounds. He like the competition and the pressure.

Why not try out and see what happens? My only suggestion is work on your short game, but that's what most anyone would suggest. :-)

Good luck!

In PA, 8 are on varsity, the #7 and #8 seed go out as alternates and there score is not going to count, the rest of the top 6 play for score and the top 5 of those 6 count.

In Texas we played 5 and counted four in 18 hole or 36 hole tournaments.... as far as the scores that you shoot making a # 1 ranked state team.... not this year bro.... I went to a 2aa school here and I was the number one player on the team and I held a 71 average in tournaments and a +4 handicap at my home course. I just happened to be the only player on my team that could break 80. In Texas the number one team in the state averages a four man total of around 298... that is a 74 average....Shooting those scores, you might want to consider going to public school and trying to play. Private schools tend to recruit players and do not waver from their choices very often(politics suck). Work on your putting and get better with those long irons, too.....
