I think maybe I could have made a good comparison back in 2002.
IIRC the Steelhead III was a really wide, shallow fairway wood. I tried it but I strongly preferred the Steelhead+.
(I just remembered what happened to my Steelhead+... I eventually had Callaway reshaft them with Gems shafts and my wife still has them in her golf bag.)

They played quite similarly. I found the Steelhead III to be slightly more forgiving but distance wise, both were bombers. With the Steelhead IIIs I actally played a 4 and 7 wood as I hit them as long as other manufacturers 3 and 5 woods that were available back then. Still have a Steelhead 4 and 7 wood kicking around. Might have to pull them out one of these days as I am having some issues with my current fairway wood. They are really good solid clubs. In fact, I was recently looking at the tour players bag setups on the Callaway website, and both clubs are still being played by some of Cally's current staffers (sorry don't recall who). Also, Mark Calc, who has been a Ping guy forever, won recently with Steelhead III 3 and 5 woods in the bag.
