Just bought a set of Ap2s with PX 5.5 shafts from my regular second hand golf shop. According to them, this set was used by a pro and was custom fitted by titleist for him(thus, no serial number on them). I was given a good deal as the condition was not at its best, so i took it without hesitating.
Happily, i brought this set to my custom fitter(CF), as I wanted to change it's grips and adjust the lie for these clubs. Everything was fine until I asked my CF if this set is original. "He took out his magnifying glass and started to examine the clubs" After doing so, he told me that there is a chance that this could be fake, as the "forged" word is not milled perfectly. Unlucky for me, there was not a single set of AP2 at his place for me to do a comparsion. He advised me to try get my money back from the seller. Reluctantly, i took the clubs back and started to google "AP2 Fakes" and was directed here.
Spent 1 hr looking through all the links with "AP2 fakes/ counterfeits/ suspect" and concluded that my set could be original.
These are the reasons why I feel that this is original:
1. The numbers on the sole seems to match those that are original, especially the 6, 8 and 9 irons.
2. Used a magnet to test if the club is made of two pieces of metal, ie. tunsten and steel, by sliding a magnet from the sole to the face of the club. When i place the magnet near the sole, the magnetic strength is quite weak, however, when i slide it near the face, the magnet got sucked to the face immediately.
3. The titleist wording on the back of the club is painted on the top and not on the sides.
4. As this set was used by a pro, thus, justifying why this set does not have a serial number.
Appreciate if you guys can help to assess if my deduction is correct and of course, my clubs are authentic.
Attached are the photos of my clubs.
