Fellow board members,

Planning on making a trip down to visit a friend in charlotte in either mid-late oct or mid nov. want to play 1 or 2 rounds down there (friday & sunday, or just friday). i'd say we'd be willing to drive up to an hour to play and willing to spend up to 150$ to play. any suggestions as to where to play?

You can't beat Tanglewood Park's Championship course in Clemmons NC (about an hr from northern Charlotte). It hosted a PGA Championship in the 70's and a Senior Tour event til '03. Its hard as hell though. :)

In Charlotte, some of my favorites are Skybrook, Ballantyne, Verdict Ridge, hmmm... those are the main ones that are publicly accessible. :)

I believe you can get to Tot Hill Farm in an hour. Very unique and challenging course. Well worth the drive.

Forgot to mention, Tanglewood will probably only run you about 50-60 bucks.

verdict ridge is your best bet. You can do a complete tour of the course online and it is 30 mins from charlotte.

looks like all the above are good solid recommendations .........however..... if your willing to pay up to a buck and half......most of the courses recommended are a step above muni's

Granted, Tot Hill Farm is one of those course you have to play just once.....as it is rated in the top 10 of America's hardest courses....but it has many blind type of shots and elephants beneath the greens!!!!

if your visiting from out of town....my recommendation would be to head toward Pinehurst.....2 1/2 hours from charlotte......and make a day of it and play 2 Donald Ross courses the same day....Play Pine Needles Resort and then eat lunch there and head across the street to Mid Pines Resort......both of these courses are OUTSTANDING.....with the nod going to Pine Needles.....

and if you just have to play one of America's top 10 hardest courses......play Tobacco Road, same architect as Tot Hill Farm, but in my opinion not as "trumped" up......however, in my opinion, you would have a much more enjoyable, memorable, and traditional golf round at Pine Needles.....

Played Tanglewood (championship course) on the 10th.

In great shape and only 32 bucks with a cart aand range balls. Tee'd off at 2 pm
Solid course, and fairly long. Great challenge and obviously a huge bargain for that price.
I will definately be back.

Within an hour of Charlotte opens so many possibilities. If you want to stay in town, a great track is the Ballantyne resort course.
