6* driver and just launches the thing.  I know it's been said in previous seasons but he looks like he's got himself headed for a big year, another 3-5 W's and maybe that first U.S. Open.

I would enjoy seeing all of that.

I thought they said something about a 59 gram shaft in the driver.  Anybody know anything about that?

Phil Mickelson cracked the crown of his Callaway FT-9 Tour Authentic driver at the Shell Houston Open. (A nearly identical driver, the FT Tour, is now available to the public.) Like a patient in critical need of an organ transplant, the club was flown to San Diego on Easter Sunday, where it was met at the airport by the head of Callaway's R&D team, Dr. Alan Hocknell.

According to Callaway, the company, "performed an 'unprecedented repair,' removing the body from the clubface while never taking off the shaft in order to ensure that the loft and lie remained secure."

Hocknell said, "We decided to remove the carbon composite body from the face, and we've never done that before, so everyone was a bit nervous. But through a lot of teamwork, we had a new body and weights installed by 1:30 p.m. on Monday."

Meanwhile, back in Augusta, Mickelson texted Hocknell: "How bad is it, Doc? Is she gonna make it?"

Needless to say, the patient made a full recovery, was flown back cross-country, and helped Mickelson win his third green jacket. For the week, Phil hit 60% of the fairways and averaged 297 yards per drive.

A masterful job by the Callaway PR machine to turn 'Our drivers are crap and fall to bits. Even the ones we build for tour players fall apart in ten minutes' into an Apollo 13-esque, triumph over adversity in which the tireless and masterful efforts of Callaway's technicians turned potential disaster into a tear drenched triumph for their favourite son come Sunday night.

Those drivers will be flying off the shelves. Even if they do have to include a warranty claim form with every purchase.

As cool as it sounds, I find it hard to believe this "mircale" the Callaway team performed.  Why on earth would they not have spare heads or even completely identical backups for any of their staffers, let alone Phil.

I've heard a similar thing today at a demo day where the callaway rep said phil was gaming a 55g fubuki during augusta...i told him that he was mistaken but its weird that you bring it up as well

Some players, including myself, believe that no two clubs are alike.  Once you find a something that feels good, it's very difficult to replace it.  It's more of a mental thing than anything else.  You trust that piece of equipment and it bulids confidence.  What Callaway did was simply help Phil feel good about what he was swinging.
Phil has at least 2 back ups with the same exact specs...  but the copy is never as good as the original!

I've been hearing Phil's been using a 6.2* driver, can anyone confirm?

I have heard that too...I wonder if he has his 7.5* bent to that...I read on this same topic that he hits up on the ball a lot which would definetly make sense

Yea, I heard Faldo during a tournament on tv say that his driver has 6.2 or 6.3 deg of loft.

yes, it's in that range.  He hits up and hard on his driver so much he has to have loft that low.  His launch angle is still around 15-17*.

Im building my way into having my own Phil bag, minus the 7.5 TA Ft-9. Callaway told me it wasnt made in Lefty, and I said oh really thats exactly what Phil is hitting. I want the hybrids more than the driver though!

Per Golf.com  Phil pulled his hybrid outt and put in a 2010 X-Forged 2 iron for the Colonial.  For the record, he missed the cut.

I was watching the golf channel yesterday during their coverage of the colonial and they were saying that Phil is using the "distance" version of his equipment companies golf ball.  I assume he's playing the tour i(z) then.

Phil was playing the Tour iX at the Masters.  Does anyone know if he changed to the iZ?

On the skins game Phil hit 3 wood and 2 iron to setup an eagle put.  He told Billy Andre (who does a great job imo) it was a special 3 wood he had made for the U.S. Open.  Have any more info?
