Just a little info about my Dad and I. My Dad is 51 and plays to a +25 hcp (happy when he breaks 100), and I am 16 and play to a 18 hcp.
This review mat be coming from a 16 year old, but I have played 47 golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area
After the 7 and 1/2 hour car ride we went to the Legands for our 2pm tee time at Heathland. I liked heathland, but it was the type of course that needed to be played in prime season to really be appreciated. In prime season im sure it is VERY nice, but in mid summer it was a little above a mid level course in M.B. It was wide open, meaning plenty of room for shots. If you pushed or pulled a drive or almost any other shot you were fine. It was a good warm-up course, however the greens were recently punched and were pretty sandy.
Overall Grade: B- due to condition of greens
Day 2 we had a 9am tee time at Mooreland (Legands)
Mooreland I liked a good bit better then Heathland. Still an open course despite being designed by PB Dye. Greens were much better then Heathland and course is very playable for a high capper (My Dad is over a 25hcp and didnt have any trouble other then normal). Again though I would love to see this course in prime season. My highlight for Mooreland was sticking the small 265 yrd Par 4 green surrounded by trouble. Hole #18 is also a nice finishing hole.
Overall Grade: Solid B
Day 3 we had a 9am tee time at The Heritage Club.
I was very impressed by the Heritage Club. Heritage was MUCH tighter then the previous 2. Not much room off the fairway and not a forgiving course. The greens were a good bit faster then either Legands course. The front 9 is similar to a country club style with tree lined fairways, while the back 9 is completely different and much tougher. Heritage has a great finishing hole. A good amount of forced carries over swampy lakes and wetlands. I would not recommend this course to someone with a hcp of 20 or above, i dont think they would enjoy it due to the shot accuracy needed. However I did really really like it, and would probably put it in my top 5. I would love to play this course again.(Despite shooting my vacation high 96 for the round) We also saw at least 5 gators and a couple snakes. Lowlight: My Dad's 62 on the back 9.
Overall Grade: A+ very scenic and great conditions
Day 4 we had a 9am tee time (maybe a theme showing??) at Oyster Bay
I thought this course was very similar to The Heritage Club, but more playable for the higher capper. Greens were great. Just a solid course and another one in my top 15. It is definitely worth the drive if you are staying in Myrtle or south of M.B. Great island green #17 and lots of marsh views.
Overall Grade: A
After Oyster Bay we used a 9 hole rain check we had at Wicked Stick. Nothing special here, just your average mid level course in M.B. IMO there are better deals for golf in M.B. bang for the buck wise. Very relaxing afternoon round though. By far the finest view of a Walmart on the strand!!
Overall Grade: C
Day 5 we had a 8:44am tee time at TPC of M.B.
When we checked in we were informed that the greens were punched a week or 2 ago, BUT we were given a rain check to come back and play it again when the greens were better. So we get to play TPC twice for the price of once, I would consider that going above and beyond in customer service. Except for the greens the course was VERY nice. Conditions were second to none (except greens). The course is tree lined for the most part and has a few very nice holes. I would put it a shade behind Heritage (but above Oyster) due to not knowing what the greens are like usually. Another one in my top 5. This course is outstandingly well maintained, I cant say enough how great the conditions were except for greens. We had one issue with TPC though. We called up a week earlier when setting the trip up to see what their junior policy was and we were told kids (16 & under) were free with a paying adult, however when we checked in we were told juniors were $50 but due to the greens they were only going to charge $25 for me.
Overall Grade: C+/B- would of been a B (because of greens) but the junior policy issue knocked it down.
Day 6 we had a 9am tee time at Barefoot for the Love course.
I really liked this course and would put it as my #1 (without counting any courses below) Conditions were excellent and the course was beautiful! A high capper would enjoy this course IMO, although it can be made very difficult. I also broke 90 while with my Dad for the first time. (have done it once before but my Dad wasnt there)
Overall Grade: A+ just an excellent course all around!
After we played Love my Dad suggested I see what they would charge me (16yr old) to replay another barefoot course (he is 51 and was too tired). I went in and was told that if i played with my Dad it would be $25 for me and $60 for him, but just myself it would cost $60. I told my Dad and he decided we would play somewhere else and use a rain check we had, but I decided to go in and see if they would let me play for $40. I went in and must of spoke with someone who had decent authority because when I asked if they would do $40 and explained the situation he told me $25 and asked me which course I wanted to play. I was a very happy camper!! Great Customer service.
The course I decided on was Fazio (suggested by one of the cart attendants) and I couldn't of made a better choice. Fazio knocked Love off as the #1 and was amazing. This course is beautiful, I just cant describe it on here. If you are looking to play the best courses in Myrtle Beach, you would be crazy to leave Barefoot Fazio and Love off your list. I was +7 after 4 and thought "Why did I do another 18". But then I caught fire and for the next 12 holes i played even par. Only a 10 on 17 prevented me from breaking 80 (Legit too no mulligans or anything else like that). Back to Barefoot, if you are able to play Fazio and Love!
Overall Grade: A+ even nicer then Love IMO and excellent customer service.
Day 7 we had a 9am tee time at King's North.
This course was much nicer then I remembered it. Conditions were great and a very solid course. However personally I would put both Barefoot courses, heritage, and TPC above it. (My opinion, its still a very nice course) My highlight was a Birdie on "The Gambler"
Overall Grade: A Kings North has Great finishing hole (unless you need a par to break 40 for the back 9) The 47 sandtraps give a new meaning to "A day at the beach"
After Kings North I played River Hills and my sister joined me. She didnt golf, but she rode around and read her book. I would't really recommend this course, it was okay but conditions were lower then expected and way too much housing. Greens were below average condition and fairways weren't any better. But I didn't play it because i thought it was a nice course, but to spend time with my sister and I was able to get on around 5pm for $30 (finished 18 at 8pm)
Overall Grade: C
Finally Day 8 (get out of town day)
We had an 8am tee time at Glen Dornoch
I have now played this course 5 times and LOVE it. However today the greens were sandy due to being punched a few weeks ago so that was disappointing. It is not in my top 10 but it is definitely one of the best courses for the $$. Beautiful views of the intercoastal and an amazing finishing 3 holes. I would recommend this course on any golf trip, it is affordable and one of the best courses you can play for under $80. And this brings me to my current spot of in the car next to my Dad driving back up to MD.
Overall Grade: B Very Solid course with some very nice views, however the greens were just too sandy today.
Trip Highlights: 9 straight rounds with a birdie (only round without was Glen Dornoch), a total of 12 birdies in 10 1/2 rounds, ending the trip on 5 straight rounds under 90, and shooting even par for 12 straight holes a Barefoot Fazio, Best golf courses we have ever played on one trip, We got Heathland, Mooreland, Heritage Club, and TPC in a package for $308 total (Myrtle Beach golf desk was more then helpful in setting up that package).
Thank yous: Thank you to the Myrtle Beach golf desk for setting up the 5 round package for $308, The person at Barefoot who let me replay Fazio for $25, and last but probably most important all the courses who support the Kids play free policy which has allowed my Dad to take me to Myrtle Beach since I was 6 (I have now played 47 golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area)
