What is the most money you would pay for a round of golf? It would be a fair assumption this is a once in a lifetime chance to play this course. (I won't give name so please don't ask) and yes its a top 10 in the world......

Once in a lifetime...? I could give up a couple hundred bucks, but there better be a LOT amenities to it and the location.

+1. if the course is Top 10 in the world and you say it is truly once in a lifetime then $$$ is well worth it. As for the wife, remind her how much you guys spent on "her" once in a lifetime wedding.

As much as I Could really afford, probably around $150, might have to miss a few meals but I think it would be worth it

I would put it at $250. I guess this means I will never play Pebble Beach since it's like $500 unless I can qualify for some big tournament. I'm so jealous of all the junior golfers who get to play these expensive courses across the country for almost nothing!

between club/cart rental and greens fees I just dropped 300+ to play Torrey Pines so I would go way more to play a "once in a life time" joint. And to think the locals at Torrey were complaining because the greens fees were going up to 40 bucks in July for a local. I would play there everyday if I were local.

If I had the chance to play Augusta the Monday after the Masters, I'd consider this almost priceless, maybe a few thousand dollars. But realistically speaking, I'd pay the going rate Pebble Beach was asking (is that $400-$500?), that may be the threshold.

So far, my highest greens fees paid would be the Plantation course at Kapalua ($295 plus tax).

Given the "once in a lifetime" qualifier I voted for the max amount.

I'd rather take the $400-500 and play like 3 or 4 tournaments honestly. But if I could Play St. Andrews after an open I would, I've wanted to play there since I was like 5 or 6 yrs old.

Up until April of 2008, I had never paid more than $75 of my own money for a round of golf. Then I went to Maui and played the Plantation course ($295). That busted my cherry so to speak. Since then, it sure has seemed a lot easier to pay $100 or $125 for a round of golf.

As for how much to play the mystery course that the OP refers... Don't know. Your idea of a worthy course may differ considerably from my own.

$300 is the most I would pay for any golf course, even once in a lifetime. I am cheap.

I am also willing to pay for hundreds if the place is worth the pay. Nice amenities and fun golf courses.

Since I am a golf lover and I like to find new golf courses an expensive but beautiful golf course would be worth it.

I can't wait for the weekends where I can play golf with family and friends. :yahoo:

If its the Green Monkey, Augusta National or the Sanctuary which is the one of the most exclusive golf course around that I know of I would give just about any thing but my soul, wife and family.

I've paid over $300 several times in the past at places like The Ocean Course and Sawgrass. I only played Sawgrass once but I have played The Ocean Course several times. I would also be willing to pay a few thousand dollars to play the Augusta National.

Poll doesn't work for me - I wouldn't pay $100 -

On a normal course (private or public) $65 tops - now if I were to play Augusta National, the National Golf Links, Pecan Valley, now that's a one-time chance, of course I would pay more.

I should have read the post better - yes I would lay out $300 for a super course with a long standing history in golf.

The most I would pay is probably $125 or so, for some place really special The most I have actually paid is $90. I usually play a private (low cost per round because I play so much), but of the 250 or so public rounds I've probably played in my golfing career, I'd say that about 220 of those were for $50 or less.

Pebble Beach, etc. are great and all but I can't rationalize spending that much $$ for a round. I'd play like crap because all I would think about is how much I spent. "That skulled wedge shot just cost me $5!"

Well next time you're in that situation, think about it this way. That skulled wedge just made every shot you took cheaper. The more shots you take (i.e. the worse you play) the less money you paid for each shot. Might as well get your money's worth!

I would pay upwards of $5000.00 if it was MY dream "once in a lifetime" course... Fortunately, I have been able to play most of the courses I want to play and the one's I haven't don't have green fee's in excess of $500.00, therefore I don't foresee myself having to pony up for that kind of course.

Only course I dream to play has free green fees if you play your cards right. I would pay anything to walk the fairways of heaven with my grandfather.

In previous years I've paid close to $300 to play Whistling Straits, Pinehurst #2 and TPC Sawgrass. I enjoyed each and every round and felt it was worth it. However, in these current times I'd have a hard time paying more than $150 for anywhere other than Augusta National. If that opportunity came availaable, I'd try and come up with whatever was required.

I paid $200 to play the Torrey Pines South Course after the US Open. Was it worth it? Yes, only because I played with my son who showed me and basically narrated the US Open while we were playing. "This is where Tiger was in this hole, Rocco missed it here, etc."

I don't think you can put a price on a "once in a lifetime" opportunity. It would depend a lot on the course and if it was the right course and I could afford it it could be a lot. Someday I will play Sawgrass, Id love to play the Blue course at Doral also and I know what those cost. You only live once and its only money :). I can find many worse things IMO to spend 300+ on. I played the PGA Dye course in PSL, FL last year for 40 dollars, off season, but the course was fantastic. Easily the best and nicest course Ive ever played on and I would have no problem paying the full in season price of over $100. I still think about playing that course and no price can be put on that memory. I can only imagine what it would be like playing on a top 10 course. It would truly be a price is not a factor situation for me.

Paid $250 a few years ago to play Pebble Beach, it was worth every penny. My buddy was a caddy there and knew the system. I didn't have a tee time so when we arrived he slipped the starter a few bucks, the starter told me to go up to the range and hit a few balls, at 0745 he called me down and I teed off at 0800 with my friend on the bag. One of the funnest rounds I have ever played and shot an 80 from the tips with three double bogies. I would pay to go back and play again. Played Sawgrass with the same friend last summer and nearly died in lighting storm, another great time and worth every cent.

Unless I win the lottery the most I can see paying right now would be 500 for the once in a life time thing. Honestly I would only pay that much to play Augusta National. Anything other than A. National then 150 is my limit. (Pebble, Sawgrass, etc.) Guess Im screwed.

I started this post a few days back and have gotten some great responses. Unfortunately, its not Augusta (god knows I would spend a couple thousand to pay there as many of you would). I wonder if you would still pay 500 to play a top 10 course..even if it wasn't Augusta..

Most anyone I know who is serious about golf would pay serious money to play Augusta National, that is sort of a "given."

In the >$500 club for me are the following courses:

The Sanctuary @ Kiawah Island
Muirfield
Shinnecock Hills
Pine Valley
Sand Hills Golf Club
Cypress Point

Not sure I'd pay over $500 for the following, but it would be close:

The Ocean Course @ Kiawah Island
Whistling Straits
Brandon Dunes
Merion
Winged Foot
Pebble Beach
Oakmont
Seminole
The Old Course - St. Andrews
Carnoustie
Wentworth
The Olympic Club
Riviera CC
Turnberry
Royal County Down
The Country Club
Ballybunion

The majority of these I'll probably never get the chance to play so the point is moot, but in my lifetime I do want to play all of the public courses on this list.

I am actually really surprised by this thread, maybe it's just the posters who happen to be commenting but it seems like there are a ton of posters on this board who are more than willing to "throw" away their money on different equipment that won't make a big difference to their game or on collector gear that I figured most would be willing to pay 500-1000. (Don't get me wrong how someone spends there money is their business and if it makes you happy who am I to judge and money is always relative). But my list of the $500-$1000 would be extensive and I'm glad that I will never be in the position of being put to a decision of how much to pay to play augusta because lets just put it this way I think I would even scare myself with how far I would be willing to go. My problem isn't green fees (well yes it is since I'm by no means rich) but is traveling going to St. Andrews, pebble, etc would cost me more than the green fees. That being said if I had a choice of a top ten course or upgrading my irons to the newest and best I would take the top ten course.

I don't want to hijack this thread but I think (considering money is always relative) the question of how much of your relative bi-weekly pay check would you be willing to spend would put some context on this. I am in the 50% or one weeks worth of work category for sure.

On a side note Diesel I just read your signature- very belated congratulations on the hole in one on a par four that is one of my recurring dreams and you have lived it very jealous.
