I have been saying for decades that I would leave Louisiana on Memorial Day and come back mid September. I hate the hot, humid summers. And I'm still here. But, I'm in a position to change that for next year, at the latest. Anyone got an opinion as to where I could go for cooler weather that is not more than 1000 miles from Louisiana? I figure with that limitation, a higher elevation is the only hope. Thus...
New Mexico
Colorado
Maggie Valley, NC
Is there anything in Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky or Tennessee with appreciably cooler temps than sweltering?
I prefer that it's in the south or the Rockies. And of course, a town with a decent golf course is mandatory.
1,000 miles is a long way That includes a big swath of the country. Chicago is only about 900 miles from New Orleans. It is generally not 'sweltering' here in the summer ( we'll hit 90 about a dozen days a year, half of which will be windy ). We are obviously not at altitude, but there's a ton of great courses here ( literally hundreds to choose from, 207 courses between my county, and one next-door ).
There's so much area covered in your request though, that this thread could get really long. You can reach the entire East Coast south of DC, the entire southern midwest and even into Wisconsin, or out west to most of New Mexico. You have many choices
It's ironic you mention Maggie since it's such a small place and most all of my extended family lives there. I go up there around 5 or 6 times a year, and I love the location. As far as a place to live, it's a great place to be, and a lot of people retire there for the climate and laid back life style.
If you're willing to drive a little bit there are some decent courses, but in the vicinity of Maggie, I can think of two decent tracks worth playing. However, less than an hour away is Asheville with some great tracks and the new Tiger course, so it's not too bad. There is also some decent golf in East Tenn too.
PM me if plan on visiting before making decisions and you want any specific recommendations! I've played most of the tracks up there with my grandpa, so I know the area pretty well golf-wise.
I lived in Santa Fe NM from spring 2005 until last fall. It was great in the summer time. Low humidity, highs mid 70s to up to 90, but it never felt that hot, morings were 50s to 60s. A fair amount of wind tho deal with though in the spring. Fall golf was real nice. Winter, not so much, at 7000 feet it got cold, and we got snow. But highly recomemded if you want to get away form heat and humidity for the summer. A lot of nice courses in the area too, asl long as you like desert courses....
Albuquerque was different, it was hotter, and more humid due to the fact it sits in a valley, but I'm sure its better than the gulf coast. But their winters are better too.
I could imagine Colorado being great, depending on where you are....I loved to visit Denver, but it too can get pretty hot....
Even though I live in NC, now I can't comment on Maggie Valley, NC, I haven't been to the mountains yet....
It is more than 1000 miles away but the weather is perfect in the summer, days are long, golf is cheap and there are some fine courses in Spokane, Washington. Most rounds walking on the city and county courses will be under $40. Plus, the floating green is 25 miles east of Spokane in Coeur d'Alene...if golfing is your objective this would be a great place for it...36 holes a day is well within reason with 4 hours in between rounds and the weather is down right nice (it is very different from Seattle).
the mountains of nc are great in the summer, with banner elk being the coolest temp. . .banner elk has several very nice courses, unfortunately they are all private.
Whatever you do, do not come to Missouri. Missouri is awful. It routinely gets close to 100 degrees and the humidity is awful. The humidity is the real kicker. It is humid all the time. I would leave here in a heartbeat. I just don't want you to make the mistake of coming to the most god awful state in existence. I am just kidding, but not by much.
Minnesota has some great golf courses around Brainerd, check them out at exploreminnesota.com, and if you wanna go a little further north check out giants ridge golf resort.
I live in the NC mountains and the summers here are great! I live at almost 4500 feet and I don't even have A/C in my house. It rarely makes it to 80 degrees and the nights and morning are always cool. The bad thing is the lack of public golf. Most good golf courses are private and pretty exclusive. If you can afford to join one then you would love it here. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the area.
I actually live in San Diego where the average summer temp is only about 80*. Despite the ideal temps here Denver, Colorado is my favorite golf destination in the Summer.
In the Denver metro area it will average in the mid 80 temps and of course some days in the 90 temps but there is very low humidity. On the hot days you can also take a short drive (1-2 hrs) and play some of the courses at higher elevation to to avoid the heat. Denver has an abundance of great courses at very reasonable prices. They include Fossil Trace, Saddlerock, Murphy's Creek, Bear Dance, Buffalo Run, Fox Hollow, Green Valley Ranch just to name a few. There are also many great courses up and down the Front Range only about an hour or so from Denver. In addition to great golf, Denver has friendly people and so many other things to do.
