A few months ago I picked up this MacGregor Tourney Toney Penna 693 driver. I have had and refinished many Tommy Armour 693, and seen 1 or 2 Hogans, but never before have seen a Penna 693. Plus, it had its original finish on it, which was black. (Armours were done stained)
The face was pretty beat up at the heel, and I thought about just filling with epoxy, but I decided to do a graft of persimmon, shape it, cut new lines etc. When I did the heel, I then had to do the toe area of the face as well, so the color would match. I used wood from an old destroyed George Bayer DX 300 driver I had lying around.
Just a small little pocket near the toe on the crown, other than that, I think it came out great IMHO.. You really cant tell it had been worked on so heavily
I used a semi gloss lacquer, which is closer to the original finish than the usual high gloss you see. The lacquer wont yellow over time either.
For whipping, I used some thin linen whipping off a roll of old stck from MacGregor I picked up a few years ago.. I use that stuff sparingly.
Original shaft, with band and grip.

Here are the crown and sole in orig. condition

The removed wood from the toe, with a few drilled indentations to give the epoxy more to grab. This is the same method I used on the heel.

Here is the face after some blending and smoothing of the grafts (I did a little more at the top line near the neck) If you look closely you can see the shank of a screw in one of the holes.. It broke while removing. I had to cut the shank of a new screw off the head with a hack saw, then sand it down so I just had the head left, then epoxy it in. Would probably pop out if hit, but this ones a wall hanger!

The crown.. I love this Penna stamp.

There were a few dings I did not sand out on the plate; didnt want to lose the stamps

I have never gotten that great at cutting face lines.. This is one of the better ones I have done. Marked them out in pencil first then went sloooooow

Amazing club John. Truly one of a kind and an awesome refinish! Man, evertime I see one of there great ones, I truly would love to know the history of that one. Can you imagine who the 1st owner of that was? You never really know who hit that, perhaps Jimmy Demerit, or Penna himself. You never know.

Great job. I have several old clubs in the basement but have yet to undertake trying to refinish them. If they would turn out half as good as yours I would be a very happy man.
