i dont know, i'm not seeing that. i think dealing with the fairway bunkers, going short or long off the tee, is more dramatic than all these non-birdies that are happening on 18. all the leaders are pitching it 30 feet past the pin. not an easy shot, but not a dramatic shot either.
Congrats to glover. Shooting +3 on the day and winning by two.
Awful and embarrassing. Lame finish to an awful tourney.
The crowds sure were quiet. The bare minimum of applause for the winner. I thought this was a pretty bad tournament too. Splitting all the rounds up just made it too confusing and unfair for the players and fans. I know I hardly watched any of it until this morning. Some exciting moments today but in the end, a pretty poor tournament.
Congrats Lucas Glover!!!
Welcome back Double D!!!
God bless Phil and Amy!!!
Great Day!! I love this game!!
well said, finally someone w/ perspective.
the only criticism i take is how 18 was setup. if they're going to make it driveable, then so be it ... make it play 305, not 340. and also the pin placement tucked up front penalized hitting a good drive and leaving a 50 yard pitch. that hole was a downer. easy par for the leader, very difficult birdie for pursuer ... yuck

And so is being a fan of pro golf. Watching this, we all have a story we want to see play out, but in the end it is about making putts.
Phil gets a pass because of his home situation, but to be honest, Phil could have won the Masters and this tournament if he would have just hit a few more putts.
Tiger was just in a twilight zone all week. I really think that he was pissed off about the tee time issue the most. He wont say it, but give him a round out there on Friday afternoon and he could have post a 63 or 64.
And the USGA is a joke sometimes. As someone else mentioned, they didnt extend this course at all. When the winner can shoot a 73 on the final day and still win by 2 strokes, there is something up. When the finishing hole requires you to hit 6 iron, 8 iron, 2 putt to win, and nobody who is going for it can make birdie, then there is something up with the set up.
It just sucked IMO. The weather wasnt the only reason.
I'm glad Glover won, but there were so many other storylines: Phil and Amy, Tiger's lack of a putter, the weather, Duval's amazing run, Barnes' collapse. It was a good tourney, but it could have been much better!

TWs problem sometimes is that he plays too conservatively at the outset. he was still aiming for par when others guy realized the early conditions meant birdies were to be had. when he plays more aggressively -- like today -- i think he actually makes better swings too. guys like TW, PM etc etc with that swingspeed are just wired to play the game at a higher tempo ... imho
As a fan of pro golf, I'm always hoping for a good storyline to propel golf's prominence in the news and the sport's overall popularity.
Between the guy that needs an interpreter to conduct an English interview winning the Masters and Glover's U.S. Open win on a Monday afternoon.......this season is off to a downright awful start as far as storylines are concerned.
Phil or Duval would have been so much better. But that's golf. I'll just continue to read about it on the back page of the sports section, right next to the penile implant ads and WNBA box scores.
so this is a bad tournament because Phil nor DD won? i thought it was very compelling golf..and the course finally showed its teeth..without the good weather on those two days for the leaders, Even probably wins. Great course. I hope they go back..

You can't call it a bad tourney just cos your guy didn't win!
I'm glad that we've got a different story than a Phil or Duval win. This is sport, not some low-budget feelgood movie. There's way too much Phil and Tiger hype as it is. I feel bad wanting them to lose, as they're decent guys, but its just way too much circus.
I'm interested in golf, and if this kind of result keeps the casual fans away, so much the better as far as I'm concerned.
And so what if the Masters winner cant speak fluent English? This is a global sport, the more diversity the better.
I'm in the finance business. I don't know a lot about picking major winners, but I do read Barron's regularly. Here's their take from last Friday. Now I must return to counting my money.

Don't you think that's kind of elitist?
Thats not how I meant it at all. What I meant was, TV and the media generally want as much hype as they can get and hence just focus on the big names and "stories". I don't give a damn about that, I don't care if a few guys who never follow golf suddenly pay attention and switch on their TV sets for a week or two a year. It doesn't matter to me, and frankly I am happy to be without the brainless coverage that encourages.
If you're in the golf business, then I can see why you want a massive Tiger/Phil roadshow all the time. But I'm not, so I don't :-)

I understand that completely. One thing that always irks me is the insistence of the media to never admit that Tiger is out of it. He was the "Marquee Group" the last two days on the DirecTV channel for the open. Sorry, but a guy who is 14 shots back at one point and who never got closer than three at any point should not be given that entire channel.
Mickelson and Mahan, although long shots, at least had realistic chances to win.
Alas, many fans are front runners. 'tis the nature of the beast.
It was interesting to watch. But I would not call this a great, or even very good US Open.
When the two guys in the final group both try their best to give away a big lead, and noone can take advantage, it makes for a weak tournament IMO.
3-over and 6-over for Glover and Barnes. Not exactly what I would call grabbing it by the throat.
I would have preferred to see Duval not get the terrible bunker lie, or Weir actually make a few 5-foot putts, or PM not cough up another major on the last few holes.....ANYTHING other than watching one of the two final group players stumble their way across the finish line.
The only thing worse than Glover's 3-over stumble-fumble round was Barnes even WORSE 6-over round that VERY easily could have been MUCH worse. It was painful to watch him putt. The guy was actually scared of the hole.
