Top 5

Pebble Beach
Spyglass Hill
PGA West Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course
Bajamar Mexico - at $60 parts of it felt like Pebble Beach - can't beat that.
TPC Surgarloaf

Local favorites.
Industry Hills IKE - Southern California
Oak Quarry - Southern California

Overated
PGA West TPC Stadium - just not fair or fun.
Torrey Pines - unless you are a resident of San Diego - not worth the greens fee.
Trump National - felt like there should have been a windmill you had to hit through.  Felt too gimmicky.

Top I have played

US list:
Pebble Beach
Spyglass Hill
Spanish Bay
Torrey Pines (South)
Bay Hill
Doral

Internationally (Canada & Scotland):
St. Andrew's Old Course
St. Andrew's New Course
Capilano G&CC (Vancouver, Canada)
Nicklaus North (Whistler, BC)

Most overrated of above:
Doral.

Notable mention for top course list:
Moray Golf Club (near Elgin, Scotland) - very tough track and totally unforgiving to stray shots but what a course! #1 and #18 are borderline silly tricked up but overall the course is great
San Juan Oaks (Hollister, CA) - best course outside the 17 Mile Drive for Northern Cali.
Titleist 915 D3 9.5 degree, Oban Devolution 6 (03 stiffness) 65g
TE Exotics CB2 3w 15 degree Proforce V2
Mizuno JPX 825 19 deg Hybrid fujikura s
Ping i20 blue dot, Rifle Project X 5.5
Cleveland RTX 588 56 degree, Rotex 2.0
Ping Anser 2i isopur

I am only 16 so I haven't been able to play all the ones I would like to yet, but here are my Top 5.

1. Juniata Golf Club (Philadelphia)...........JOKING (anyone in Philly will get this joke)  :cheesy:

1. New Royal Kent (Virginia)
2. Renditions Golf Club (Maryland)
3. True Blue Plantation (Myrtle Beach)
4. Tidewater Golf Club (Myrtle Beach)
5. Queenstown Harbor Golf Club (River Course) (Maryland)

I am hoping to have a couple new ones in there 2 weeks from now after my Myrtle Beach trip (I will be playing some VERY nice courses)

@ joekelli :
Agree with Long Bay overrated, I will be playing TPC and the Love course The week of July 4th and I am now VERY excited! Will have to play Caledonia when we go back down in August. Im 16 and its my last year to take advantage of Juniors play free w/paying adult or Junior rates so My Dad and I are playing most of the courses we've always wanted to (and I am splitting the cost with him as it is pretty hefty.)

Good topic...

1.  Ocean Course at Kiawah
2.  Baltimore Country Club East Course  (got rained out only got in 7)
3.  Caledonia Golf & Fish Club
4.  Atlanta Athletic Club (Only 13)
5.  RTJ Prattville (The Judge and The Senator)
6.  Great Waters at Reynold's Plantation

Out of my list - I'd say The Judge, just didn't enjoy it so much.

My Top 5:
Bandon Dunes
Pacific Dunes
Bandon Trails
Chambers Bay
Tetherow

Most over-rated would be Chambers Bay. Cool Course design, but the greens were garbage.

Tetherow was the best for me. Great course design and like playing Bandon in the middle of the mountains!!! Awesome!!!

Bethpage Black
Bethpage Green
Bethpage Yellow
Bethpage Red
Bethpage Blue

No, kidding.  Just have Bethpage and its five courses on my mind right now for some reason.  My real Top 5:

Bethpage Black

Harbour Town

Kiawah Island Ocean

Pebble (Really? Somebody above played it and doesn't rank it in their top 5?  The 7th hole alone gives it a top 5 as far as I'm concerned.)

And, how could I leave out Sawgrass?

(As I review the above I realize that I may have become a Pete Dye fan boy.)

My Top 5 I have played:
1: Spyglass Hill
2: Pasatiempo
3: WeKoPa Saguaro
4: Poppy Hills
5:Desert Highlands CC (site of the original skins game)

I cant really call any of those courses over-rated all great courses. I will say they most over-rated course I have played is TPC Scottsdale Stadium, Im not sure that even cracks my top 10 Phoenix area courses.

2) Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

4) Bethpage Black
5) Grandover Resort (East Course)

Bethpage Black was the most over-rated but I played the course prior to '02 Open/renovations.

Top 5 in no particular order

TPC Sawgrass FL
Doral Blue Monster FL
Quarry at Giants Ridge MN
Ventana Canyon Mountain Course AZ
Dinosaur Mountain Gold Canyon AZ

I think the Blue Monster is a little over rated and the Great White course a little under rated.

I've heard that from a lot of people.  I didn't play the White, but did think think the Blue Monster did get a lot of accolades for being pretty plain jane.  The 18th is the best hole by far but most everything else is pretty blah.

I agree with you on Pebble, while the views are spectacular and that stretch from 6-8 is pretty tremendous, I thought that Spyglass was a better golf course then Pebble.  As for Whistling, it's a good golf course, but I actually the River course at Blackwolf Run better.

My Top 5 (in no particular order, except #1)
The Riviera Country Club, LA
The Olympic Club (Lake), San Francisco
Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach
Los Angeles Country Club (North)
Southern Highlands Golf Club, Las Vegas

Most overrated: Though technically it's not rated very high, but Cascata in Las Vegas is awful.  By the 13th hole you feel like you've played the same hole 3 or 4 times, you can only have so many blind shots and go up and down a mountain so many times.  If I paid $500 to play there I may just shoot my face off!

No particular order

Shinnecock Hills
National Golf Links of America
Pinehurst #2
Bethpage Black (over 20 times)
Maidstone

Shinnecock is my favorite

Looks like a long Island man.

Mine are:
Shinnecock
Friar's Head (may be the best new layout of the last 20 yrs)
Lahinch
Pine Valley
To Dye Fore/ Tooth of the Dog (I think T Dye Fore is better, but both great)

Over rated: Merion, Sebonack (great piece of land and a bit of a let down.  Not many memorable holes except for the second which is long into a rediculous green complex that is almost unplayable.)

Spyglass hill
Pasatiempo

also played but missed the list:
Bandon Dunes
Troon North Pinnacle
Tehama (Clint Eastwood's private club, what a crazy layout)

1.  Congressional - Blue Course (Maryland)
2.  Royal New Kent (Virginia)
3.  Four Streams Golf Club (Maryland)
4.  Olde Stonewall (PA)
5.  Harbour Town (SC)

Of the most overrated - Harbour Town.  Really a let down considering the conditions are not kept all year long.  The only reason it is in my top five is because I actually like the emphasis the course puts on shotmaking and ball placement.  You really have to strike the ball well there to score and place your ball properly.

Honorable Mentions - Stonehouse (VA); The Golden Horseshoe (VA); Chevy Chase CC (MD); Queenstown Harbor River Course (MD);

Hopefully will be playing Oakmont later this year.  So that will change the list.

My favorite course is actually The Melrose on Daufuskie Island.  Really a good track by Nicklaus and one I could play for a week straight.  The finishing stretch is tremendous.

Biggest letdown:

Brown Deer Park

Milwaukee CC? Really? Just surprising, but a very nice private. Of course, in a sea of nice privates in the area (Bluemound CC, West Bend CC, et cetera).

As for Brown Deer, I agree. I was definitely expecting more the first time I played it. Especially considering it being the host for the US Bank Championship. IMO, I believe part of the issues with the draw for the field, why it was moved in the competition calander, and ultimately why it might fade away to nothing-ness, is due to the course. There are a lot better tracks in the area that would be a better fit, and possibly bring in better players. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine track. Just not as polished as it should be. Being a country resident at least allows me a better green fee..

Amen!

Top 5-ish (in no given order):

  • West Bend CC
  • Arcadia Bluffs
  • Tullymore
  • Erin Hills (post-changes)
  • Lawsonia (Links course)
  • Blackwolf Run

Over-rated:

  • Erin Hills (pre-change)

While EH a beautiful track, it definitely had it's quirks. It was always a bit surprising to me that it was getting as many accolades as it was, so early in it's existence. The revisions appear to have really helped the layout and fluidity of the course. I'm really excited as it continues to mature. In any case, I'd play there regardless..
