The subject really says it all.  I want to find out my swing speed without going through an entire fitting process.  Where can I go to figure this out?

I live in NYC.  The major golf shops I know about are Golfsmith and The World of Golf.

I can give them a call to see if I can walk in, take a few swings, and walk out.  However, I feel like I'll get better info on this forum.

Thanks -

How far do you hit your driver the times you hit it reasonably well?  IIRC it is often ~2.5yards/1MPH club head speed.  Short of getting a swing speed radar that is a ballpark estimate.

Old rule of thumb that still works:

Estimate your carry distance and DIVIDE by 2.5 = estimated swing speed.

OR to check:  Swingspeed X 2.5 = estimated carry distance + estimated roll = total distance

Example in reverse:  My ss (as verified by machine/monitors) is about 92 X 2.5 = 230 estimated carry distance.    This seems to be right as my average TOTAL distance is about 240 +/-

You're margin of error depends on ego.  But you'll be within a mile or two of your "monitored/verifiable" distance imho.

And when in doubt - go with the softest shaft you can control, imho.  :-)

Funny b/c it's true.

the 2.5 rule seems to work for drivers - how about for irons?  Or does one usually ahve the same swing speed for both (I doubt that).

5 iron supposedly 80% of driver ss.

As far as your original question goes....if you know one of those stores you mentioned has a trackman or something, you could always test a driver you're interested and ask if you can test on the monitor instead of the sim because you're more interested in seeing the numbers you generate with the club.

I guess it's a little sleazy if you have no plans what-so-ever to buy the driver, but if it makes you feel bad, just buy a dozen balls or a shirt or something before you leave and it'll be a little more admirable.

For irons, the perfect smash factor is about 1.35, while the driver is 1.5.

Coincidentaly I went to the golf store during lunch and was trying a 5W.  I have never really paid attention to my SS before but this time I was and it was mostly on the lower 80s probably around 83 average.  My carry distance its probably around 195-200 with the Driver currently but the launch is really high  so I guess that will be somewhat accurate at 2.5 times although I am not sure if Driver SS should be higher than lets say 5W SS.

Anyways....

Peace

It is basic physics.  As the club gets shorter the speed of the clubhead gets slower.  As long as the 5W is shorter than the driver- then the ss of the 5w will be slower.

Thank you sir...  So a 5W 3" shorter than Driver will yield what % reduction? :)  Are there any formulas for this, curious....

OP - you should be able to get a rough swingspeed measured at Golfsmith I would think with one of those little swingspeed gizmos with the LCD displays.  They should have one in their hitting bay.
