A man is judged by his character when he is at his lowest
How many men are accosted by a man with a mic on national television at his lowest? Think you'd come out looking good?
considering the fans and the media are the only reason they have the opportunity to do what they do, Id like to think I would carry myself like Arnie
Not everyone is blessed with the temperament of arnold palmer. Yes, I said blessed- it's as much of a talent as knocking down pins. Despite what you'd like to think, I seriously doubt you could muster both the competitive fire to motivate yourself the way Tiger does, AND the benevolence and patience to put up with an incessant media assault. Tiger can't, so he chooses to be good at his job.
As for myself, Tiger has EARNED my respect with his dedication to excellence. He doesn't owe me anything. It's not like I helped him out, gave him a few swing tips, then dropped him off at Augusta when his car broke down. Just like everyone else, I watched as he did the impossible every week- feats he accomplished as a product of his OWN hard work and his OWN dedication, and I'm very, very grateful that I've had the opportunity to watch him play, if only on TV. I think I put 3 or 4 bucks in his pocket when I bought my nike sp-8s. In return, he's given me endless captivating and unforgettable moments.
Could he be a better man? Yes. Could all of you (and me)? Hell yes.
Well you seriously doubt it because of my posting style on the internet? Strange
I seriously doubt it because 99% of the population doesn't have the temperament of an Arnold Palmer. I've yet to see anything in your posts that even hints that you're part of the 1%.

Plenty of athletes all the time, that's who. And most handle it with something other than short, terse.....leave-me-the-F-alone answers.
Here is a guy who goes out for his practice rounds under the cover of darkness specifically to avoid the media, and YOU, the fans. Eye contact with those "idolize" him, is non-existant. Simply put, he'd rather you stay home and leave him be.
People here crap all over Phil Mickelson for being a false guy who only turns it on for the cameras and fans, but who know what, he friggin tries! He thinks enough of the people that show up to watch him, to recognize their presence, to make them feel special during the time he spends at the course each day. He realizes he's one of the rare people that get to do a job they truly love to do, and shows it on the course, and to the people that appreciate his talent. The guy might be the biggest wanker in the free world away from the course, but he...and a LOT of others out on tour, MAKE the effort.
Eldrick can't be bothered....so my feeling about him is: neither can I.
My $.02
Totally agree with this. Excellent post.
Whilst I'm sure answering endless banal questions does get tiresome, Woods' attitude in press conferences exceedingly poor. The fact he has to do interviews so quickly after a round is not an excuse. That comes with being a pro golfer I'm afraid and it's the same for everyone. Get over it, and yourself.
More generally his responses always fall into two categories 1) Bland stock media trained response which tells us precisely nothing interesting and 2) arrogant put downs. I seriously wonder why people bother interviewing him at all (which is maybe what he's hoping for). Either way his attitude is all wrong. And let's not get started on his club throwing and spitting, both of which I saw being done by a very young junior golfer at my club yesterday!
Lately you seem to be really annoyed at press conferences and after the round interviews. Yea I know the questions are stupid and you are probably the greatest golfer ever, but geez try to have some fun. Lighten up a bit, answer the stupid questions, its only a few minutes out of your day. I know I know your busy, you like your privacy, I cannot blame you, but really you are starting to come off as a spoiled kid at best. Its just golf, Tiger.
Thanks
He should skip the press interviews, since he never says anything worth hearing. Bland, evasive and devoid of content. Shows a certain disdain for the fans too, if you ask me.

Well said. As time goes on, I like Tiger less and less. Yeah, he's amazing, but f--- him and his 6am practice rounds, sneaking in the back door and walking by applauding patrons swearing to himself. Anthony Kim had it right...the tragic death of Nick Adenhart put it all in perspective for him. I thought Tiger's two cubs and his bum knee might soften him up a bit. Wrong. Too bad. Go on, beat Jack's record and then go away, will you?
I just can't understand all the bitterness and dislike for Tiger. It seems to me that the folks posting ought to practice a little of what they're preaching and just accept Tiger for who he is and enjoy it, b/c you aren't likely going to see the likes of him again anytime soon.
He curses, he spits, he throws clubs. So what? He's a human being. Posts in this thread point to Arnold Palmer as the one Tiger should be like. Well Eldrick begs to differ, as it's not Mr. Palmer's records he's after. It's Jack's and Jack used to be vilified for this sort of behavior too.
Personally I'm glad Tiger is who he is. I'd much rather see him do things the way he wants to, without regard for the media or anyone else. At least that's real, it's how he wants it.
People just amaze me. He "curses, spits and throws clubs. He's human." Yeah, he's human. Since when do humans have to do that stuff? I think it's unbelievable how acting with self-control and courtesy is considered some kind of character flaw around here. Guys like Phil Mickelson are vilified for actually treating people with courtesy and respect, while Tiger is idolized for petulance. But that's what makes Tiger a winner/he's being 'real'/the end justifies the means, right? Golf is basically the last gentleman's sport, but it seems many here would like to see it go the way of the NBA or WWF. Hey, lets get some trash talking--maybe some bumping of your fellow competitors as you're walking off the green. They're just being 'human', right?
Funny how disdain for common courtesy and the viewing of empathy for others as weakness is so en vogue in today's society. Then we turn around and wonder at the callousness when road rage shootings happen, or the greed when billionaires wipe out common people's life savings without blinking an eye.
And FWIW, I'm not even 40 years old, I'm not a racist, and the only thing I'm a 'hater' of is that stupid-a** word 'hater.' I do believe being the best at a sport is not the main measure of character, and that courtesy and respect are not flaws. This rant is over, so have at it, flamers.
I do believe being the best at a sport is not the main measure of character, and that courtesy and respect are not flaws.
So do I. It's too bad, but I see courtesy and respect fading away. Look at this idiot, who can't even lay flowers down at Nick Adenhart's memorial without being on her friggin' cell phone.

Very well said! There is no doubt that Tiger is the best in the game, but that doesn't - well shouldn't - mean carte blanche to act imperious. Arnold Palmer warmly recalls his dad admonishing him over a thrown club when he was young... as he says - he never did it again. Frankly I don't get why Tiger can't be nicer... I guess being a near billionaire still leaves you with a bit too much stress... Yeah there is "golf" stress that's unrelatedto the money, but hey - I guess as Tiger would say "it is what it is...."

I think he's annoyed because he knows when he signs into Golfwrx that night he's going to see posts like this.
nobody here or in the history of golf can relate to the media scrutiny and pressures tiger has faced growing up, not to mention the discrimination he also dealt with early in his career. with that combination, i think it would be foolish for anyone on here to judge his attitude and demeanor. he grew up with jack's records on his wall, not arnie's. its not surprising that he grew up with more of a jack persona when it comes to media and fans than developing arnie's charm. tiger is a product of his circumstances growing up, and he did not always have it easy. earl admits he had a sailor's mouth and it rubbed off on tiger. for those bashing tiger for his lack of enthusiasm and interest and arrogance, maybe you should remember that you have NO IDEA what it was like to grow up as tiger woods. nobody here has any idea what it is like for the world to EXPECT you to shoot 66 every round and critique what might be wrong with your game if you don't, not to mention question you about it. maybe when he's around all the a**-ki$$ing today, he's remembering the same kinds of people staring at him and snickering behind his back when he showed up at local courses when he was still a youth, people who would not even shake his hand 20 years ago are now in his face non stop asking things of him. while i by no means think that tiger's media presence is ideal, i think that people are too quick to call him a spoiled arrogant brat. he had it pretty tough growing up and i dont think hell ever forget that. nor can he shake it from his persona. he is who he is. if you really can't stand him, turn off the tv. me, ill gladly watch tigers response when he is forced to comment 2 minutes after a crappy day at the office and ill be happy i got to see how the greatest athlete of my generation really feels after a disappointing performance.
I agree with the original poster. There is no reason tiger can't be a little more amiable to the people who allow him to play golf for a living, the fans. For example, why couldn't he have played in the par 3 contest wed?
i guess we're all perky and chipper when we have a bad day knowing better results could've been achieved.......shame on him for being a competitor who expects more out of himself

That's just the price of being top dog. Anyone can be vilified no matter how great their achievements. There are people on this board who will vilify Arnold Palmer. You just never know with people.

Fans and media are, indeed, the only reason golfers have the opportunity to do what they do. Same as any other entertainer ... (i.e., all of sports, hollywood, musicians, etc., etc.). However, what golfers do is play golf. I don't watch Tiger (or anyone else) because of what he says in interviews ... I watch him because I'm a fanatic golfer, and he's provided more than his fair share of dramatic memorable moments on the golf course.
I might say I'm utterly indifferent to interviews with entertainers - any entertainers. I have favorite actors and musicians - but they are my favorites because of the skill and talent they bring to their professions. Frankly, most of the time when you hear them speaking in interviews (about everything from their personal lives to politics) they sound like completely banal idiots.
When it comes to golf, however, I'm actually not totally indifferent to the post round interviews ... they are irritating - in fact, usually when I'm listening to them, I'm thinking about the shots actually going on in the field that aren't being covered - so I can hear someone say "Well, my irons were pretty good, but I didn't putt very well". Blah blah blah. Show me golf.
I do not care if Tiger, or Phil - or anyone else - is great, or irritated in a one minute post-round interview. I could care less what they're like at all. (I also could care less what Amy Winehouse's personal life is like, or what Sean Connery says about any issues).
I love entertainment of all sorts ... sport, movies, plays, music ... makes life a lot richer. And watching any entertainer perform at the top levels of his or her craft can be unbelievably thrilling. By the same token, listening to an entertainer talk about themself is generally about the most mindlessly boring exercise its possible to engage in.

I dont think anyone is saying acting courteous is a character flaw. The only ones pointing out flaws seem to be the Tiger haters. I don't really think Phil is vilified for being a courteous person either. I think Phil has been vilified because he is not a machine like golfer. Personally I like that about him. A Phil victory means more to me as he is just as likely to collapse as he is to pull of a great final round. Tiger on the other hand is automatic if leading going into the final round.
Tiger had a bad day at the office and was pissed. I'm not really sure that gives him the right to act like a brat but I'm also not sure I'm the one to judge him. I hear often how he should just be happy he gets to play golf for a living. I don't buy that. It is a job to him. It is how he makes his living and he was lucky enough to be born with an incredible gift. He has taken that gift and coupled it with an enormous drive to be the greatest golfer that has ever lived. Some call him rude and they may be right. I look at it as focused and determined. He has one purpose in life and that is to be the best that has ever lived at his profession. I for one an thankful that I am around to be witnessing it. I was also thankful for being able to grow up watching the greatest athlete of all time IMO MJ. He was not exactly the model of happiness after a tough loss either. I don't idolize Tiger for being petulant. I idolize his abilities on the golf course.
And FWIW I am not a Tiger lover. I'm actually a Mickelson fan. But I do love to watch Tiger play.
I sincerely hope that was a joke. It is not as you say just golf, it's his life, his being, his purpose.
I sincerely hope this was a joke. He's got a wife and 2 little kids and a mother, that's life. IT's just golf, it could stop tomorrow and "LIFE" will go on.

There is a difference between being a Tiger "Hater" and a person that expects a Professional to behave like one
The way people fawn over Mr Woods is tiresome, Its funny how they can be so enamered with an individual that could careless about you.
I can understand the juniors, but grown men acting the way they do over another grown man is kinda silly.

well said. i just recently got into watching golf and the more i watch tiger the more i'm amazed at his talents and dedication to work, but the more i don't like him as a person. wouldn't want my son throwing his clubs when he misses a putt. i'm sure tiger wouldn't want his son to do that also, so why is he doing it himself?
i can appreciate what different people are saying, and we all love the game of golf, but it is only a GAME, and in the grand scheme of things is...trivial.
tonight five million children in the United States will go to bed hungry.

It's not that surprising really. Look at us, posting on a internet forum about a game where in the participants hit a small white sphere, chase after it, and hit it again. Being that we are all clearly obssessed with this game, it's not surprising that there is an equal obsession with the player who is the absolute best at this game. You miss the point of why people are enamoured with Tiger. I has absolutely zero to do with whether he cares about fans be it in mass or an individual. It has to do with his skill for playing the game and the enjoyment that most people gain from watching him.
Man, I don't recall Jack spitting like that or misbehaving like many of this players!
Yes, we want efficient pros, but on a golf course we need gentlemen first.
Come on people, he's Tiger Woods, he can act any way he wants. It's a shame that all he ever wanted to do was break Jack's records. Would have been nice for him to display a fraction of the class Jack, Arnold, Player, Norman, Watson, Langer, etc........ had. Bottom line, all the money in the world can't buy class.
Some day, years from now (or maybe sooner than we think) when his game starts to fail, and it will, we may be in for some of the most embarrassing actions ever by one so talented....... or are we seeing it now.
oh for f***'s sakes, you're saying his game is failing right now? Did you watch the Arnold Palmer? When did inside the top 20 at the masters become a bad thing especially considering the names who missed the cut completely.
No, looks like you need help with this. Some day, years from now, is when his game starts to fail, and it will. What we are seeing sooner is some of the most embarrassing actions ever by one so talented.
Glad to help.
oooo we got a psychic here! please help me out and tell me who is going to win the masters so i can win some money off of it
I find it funny how some people tend to nitpick or just try to find something pretty meaningless to complain about, directed at someone who's at the top of their given profession.
Tiger gets paid to play golf, NOT to give interviews or whatever else some people
thinks he needs to be doing to satisfy their ideals of what a perfect professional
golfer s/b doing.
If some of the past greats of the game got the same media coverage TW gets today,
I've got a feeling you might just have a whole different perspective on how they might have been portrayed or conducted themselves.
Arnie used to smoke, was that a good image to teach a younger fan base?
Jack's been known to publicly berate his caddy on occasions when things weren't going his way, etc, etc.

Darpar
Back when Arnie smoked it was not considered the big deal and health concern it is today. Plus the world was not as politically correct (how I long for those good old days) but where the media and the fans were concerned Arnie was always a perfect gentleman. Tiger could learn a great deal from the King. We all could where sportsmanship and just a great guy is concerned.
