We are looking to take an overnight trip to the poconos, but are trying to keep it near the pa/nj border. I have played a bunch of courses there. Just wondering if i am missing something worth playing. The two that I am suggesting to play is CC of the poconos and Shawnee. Anything else worth playing? Not fans of Water Gap or Mountain Manor.

Go about 20 minutes west and play Pocono Farms CC. 5 miles north of Mt. Airie Lodge on 611 in Tobyhanna. Great target golf with great greens.

I'm up in Wilkes-Barre and I highly recommend Jack Frost National, on 940 just west of Blakeslee. I don't know if it's too far or not for you to travel (about 1/2 hour from Shawnee on 80) but I feel that it's well worth the drive - my father routinely drives up from Linden, NJ just to play it with my brother and myself. It's still relatively new, going on only its 3rd season or so, and the course is really starting to come along/fill-in now. It has a ton of elevation changes that make for some pretty interesting scenarios. If you're willing to go a little farther west, even if you base everything out of Shawnee, there are lots of other really great courses that are also very reasonably priced. PM me if you want to know about anything else, or I'll just check back on here, too.

If you are going to be close to the NJ border, and I dont know how much out of your way because this course is closer to rt's 78/22 than rt 80 - is the architects club in washington/phillipsburg NJ. I havent played there for about 3 years, but it was a real fun course in good shape. They have one hole from many designers - one par 5 stands out that really makes you think you are at augusta.

Jack Frost is a bit further than we want. I played it last year and its atleast a 2 hour trip to get there from where we are. Architects is great but way too expensive on the weekend during the main season. We will typically play it now in april or october.

It might be. I'm not really sure. I played it 2+ years ago, and am not from the area.

Looking at their website, it sure seems to be private now.

Either way, it was nice.

Wow, I was across the street at Split Rock this week. I'll have to try Jack Frost next time I go to Split Rock, IF we ever go there again. Not exactly a great place to stay if your in the Galleria at Split Rock.

For those who might want to try Split Rock know this, there are a lot of forced carries, including one to an uphill (at least 2 club lengths) green which seems too narrow for the distance the ball needed to carry.

Hole #4 has a forced carry that leaves little fairway to avoid it. Holes 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14 and 18 also have forced carries. 18 actually has 2, with the landing area blocked from view by bushes.

The architect also has a number of holes where you must layup, including 8, 10, 12, 14 and 18.

The front 9 had just been aerated and they did a poor job filling the holes with sand, so putts and chips went where they wanted to. Course was over watered in places.

Water Gap CC is right on the border with PA/NJ, it is a SUPER FUN golf course and not all that expensive either. How can you NOT like Water Gap????

Not far from there is another called Shawnee Inn that is supposed to be good as well. Otherwise there are af ew others int he area, what about Jack Frost National?

We already took our trip. Played Split Rock in the morning and agree with jotirama. Very awkward course to play just once. I can see how it could be nice but you have to know where you are going. Then went across the street to JackFrost (still one of my alltime favorites). Finally played CC of the Poconos on Sunday. We had a good time.
