Over priced, 6 hour rounds, guys that like to think they play by the rules but don't know what the rules are. I'm skipping it this year. Last year was enough.

That sums it up pretty good. Save your money for something else.

We didn't have 6 hr rounds but its is way over priced! I like to compete but to pay the $199 plus $40 more per round (than normal price) is crazy!
Absolutely THE worst amateur events that I have ever played in. Over priced rounds, poor organization and the courses that we played were definitely not worth the money. I won my region last year, and they still wanted me to pay to play in the national championship. After winning a ridiculous amount of money in gift cards to tgw.com, its totally not worth it. I'll be playing in qualifiers this summer instead and a couple of member guests. Don't waste your time.
I'm thinking about doing the Golf Channel Amateur Tour... but have no experience or knowledge of it... anyone done it?
If you're a good player - in other words, can shoot par or better most of the time - then this is not for you.
But for all other amateurs that work a regular job during the week but sometimes want to experience that little bit of tournament atmosphere on the weekends for fun, it's a good place to play. You also get to meet some good people with whom you'll make fast friends.
It is, as it says, as it is advertised, an AMATEUR TOUR, there is no prize money, but you do win a Trophy and a gift card.
It is for ALL SKILL LEVELS, and I know that my friends and I enjoy it very much, to be able to play in a "mock" atmosphere and pretend like you're out there on the Final round going for the Trophy.
Don't listen to these poser-detractors, believe me, it's good fun.
I really enjoyed playing in the events as well. I have made some good friends out of it. I am not playing because of the price - it is expensive - but it was fun. I think it is great for the amateur golfer - I just wish it was more affordable for me. I looked into egolf as well, but even then cannot justify paying the membership fee and the tournament fee - although almost half of GCAT. I will stick to qualifiers and state AM stuff - at least those are 2-3 days for what one GCAT event costs.
I just joined the egolf tour here in Columbia. Tournaments every other weekend on some decent courses. Great chance to meet people and play one round of stroke play for a trophy and gift cards. www.amateurgolftour.net

That's a good response. I've always been curious, but you explain the type of guys I play with. Mostly for fun (full time jobs/families) but might want to have a 'fun' competitve round. I may check it out!
I played on the GCAT in Myrtle Beach (not sure if they still have a section??) and it is over-priced, especially the initial membership fee, and the prize money (gift cards) isn't great at all. HOWEVER, if you don't have any other legitimate options around you, I'd absolutely go for it. It's tournament golf and it will certainly make you a better player. Check into other options in your area but don't be completely turned off from the GCAT by the opinions of some of the others on here.
By the way, DTRAIN, I just joined the Columbia eGolf tour as well. Send me a PM - look forward to playing with/against you!
