Definitely the best of the best. Why on Earth he's not at the Masters doing color commentary, I'll never know, because Lord knows that THAT broadcast needs a little excitement.
COMPLETELY agree ... LOVE listening to his broadcasts !!!!!!!!!

I'm with you ROBOPTI. I love listening to him!!!! I mean really, who dare says this except for Johny. "He must of hit that two grooves high, that is why he was short" The crazy thing is, he could be right.
I have met him and was fortunate enough to have a personal lesson with him as well. He is a FANTASTIC down to earth guy and a real honest family man. If you met him it would be impossible not to like him. His candour and sense of humour are also top notch.
Let's not forget he has two BIG majors, competed at a top level for years and was/is regarded as the BEST iron player in the game for a decade - even by Nicklaus. You have to show him some respect. In fact, when he went on the Senior Tour I believe he led the field in driving and GIR's for some early events but tanked due to almost worst in field putting. You have to admit he knows swings and ballstriking.
Some of his comments are "know it all-sih" but so what? Feherty (off the bottle) is a little over the top at times as well and last I heard McCord he was brutal .. he seemed drunk or high and his social commentary and giggling have worn real thin for my liking.
I like that some of Johnny's comments just slip out and that some of them are nonsensical .. imagine how hard it would be to call shots from a freakin' monitor. This adds some degree of entertainment you must admit
There are so many announcers that are terrible compared to Johnny ... Wadkins, Tirico, Tilghman, Strange etc etc. Give me Alliss and Oosterhuis with Johnny and Koch and you have world class on NBC.
Lowlite of Canadian Open was him losing to John Cookie in that epic 7 hole playoff
PS I played a round with Gary Koch and he is also an unbelievably good guy - he took 10 bucks (CDN) from me (70 vs my 71)
He is without question one of the more prepared announcers regardless of sport. After what I saw on "Real Sports," I have a ton of respect for him. He walks every inch of every golf course, measures rough, drops balls, speaks to groundscrew, the superintendent, tourney officials. He leaves no stone unturned.
That said, some of his statements drive me nuts. As a former player, he should know better about giving personal opinion. He was a great player with a beautiful swing and not many guys, outside of the top 5 or 6, today, have his game. When he says things like "His swing would make Hogan vomit" or the like, it's just uncalled for. He should also never call someone a "choker" even if its true. Considering there was a point when he could barely hold a putter let alone make a putt, I would expect him to refrain from those types of comments.
That's part of the problem. Although he talks about his problems, he remembers himself as a great player, not the guy who hit a rough patch and struggled for various reasons. Would it be fair for someone to point that out? No, not really. That's why he should do the same. Stay away from the personal attacks.

I agree with what your are saying for the most part. I do not agree that when someone is coming down the stretch and hits 3 inches behind the ball. You call it as it is.. He chocked. That isn't a personal attack. It happens to everybody. It is what it is.... Lets face it, I don't think Johny has used the C.... word in a few years. He has toned it down a bit. I'm ok with him saying "the pressure must be getting to him"... but me personally I would rather just have him say he chocked.
He is the best. No one is even close. If everyone either loves you or hates you, you are probably very good at what you do. It is the same with Tiger. Most people have a man crush on him or they start a post about how golf would be better off without him(total BS).

That just doesn't stand up...that would make obama the best president and michael moore the best film maker.

There are people who love Michael Moore, Really? never met one seriously...

there is some truth to that comment. The whole point of announcers is to add value to the program. And it seems with Johnny, the guys who love him, want to watch him...and those that hate him, watch even MORE closely so they can start posts about things he said literally 3 seconds after he says them.
he is great for NBC in that regard. In fact polarizing figures are great for television
His performance at the Shell Houston Open today is nothing short of brilliant, he made a comment about how Freddie can hold the ball into the wind off a hook lie, I really feel that todays performance may deserve an Emmy, too bad he won't be the lead at the Masters next week.
Brilliant, he just made the observation that Ogilvy is the best long iron in the game with Tiger being close, no one else would have the guts to make that kind of observation, everyone else would say Tiger is the best but Ogilvy is a close 2nd. Does anyone know if Johnny has an audio book, I would love to download a copy.
