There is absolutely no one more intelligent in terms of how to play the game, how to swing, and what people are thinking. In fact I am so disappointed there are only 4 active threads on this forum right now. A person of his stature should have at least 6 or 7.

Too smug for my taste. Never interested in what is going to happen, always tells us what he thinks is going to happen. Smart guy, can't take that away from him but he's in too much of a hurry to prove it.

It's sickening that there's not more threads dedicated to JM eh, Rog?

I will give credit where it is due. And he is very insightfull and defiinitely knows what he is talking about. On the other hand though he can be very smug, boderline condescending.

Well actually Johnny is "kind of a big deal"

I also hear he musks up before he goes on the air.

Anyone just hear what Miller said about Hunter Mahan's missed putt?

"That putt goes right, Mahan should know that if he's been watching this event over the years"

Gimme a break. THAT right there is why I can't stand Johnny Miller.

Yeah, I really like ol John. He's intelligent and not drab like a lot of commentators. He's no Feherty in terms of pure entertainment, but he's still awesome.

Definitely the best of the best. Why on Earth he's not at the Masters doing color commentary, I'll never know, because Lord knows that THAT broadcast needs a little excitement.

He has said that Pat Perez and at a different time today Tiger "spin the ball more than anyone on tour." This along with the 450lb bench press comments just crack me up. What he says is almost comical.

At one point he was talking about Tiger's ball. Maybe he was talking about his ability to spin it in a different discussion. My take on the ball comment was that Tiger's ball is different than everyone else's ball.

Is Tiger's ball unique to Tiger?

I'm with you Pure745. I hear those exact things myself. When he gets something wrong they will replay the swing and he'll come up with some reason that he thought the ball was going left. He'll point to a guys knee and say that it was out front or that his elbow was tucked or that his shoulders were closed. Any of us could do that.

Rog: Here is Tiger 200 yards out.

Me: Headed left isn't it Rog?

Rog: No, way right.

Me: With that closed stance and that lie, I figured it had to go left. Lets look at the replay. YEAH, you can see the closed stance and the HOOK lie. Only a guy like Tiger could hit it right from this lie. Here he is and you can see the open clubface. If not for that open clubface that ball is going left, I mean so far left you wouldn't be able to find it, eh Rog, Gary, Mark?

Dan Hicks: Lets go to 14, Dottie Pepper.

What's the nickname Phil Mickelson is supposed to have? FIGJAM? I'm pretty sure it was originally invented for Johnny Miller.
"I was pretty good at holding a lead, and I always tried to make more birdies."
Yes, point taken, you were pretty good at everything, now can we please return to today's tournament?

Im sure he said a little while ago that the 14th was def. a chance of making 1.
And now he is giving tennia advice!

Dlygrisse was being sarcastic, this thread was started due to all the negative ones in existence.

It was just good natured sarcasm. It's like if i were to say the Maple Leafs were a good team :D

Exactly my intentions, thank you for understanding....... :clapping: :clapping:

BTW, I find Miller a little annoying on occasion myself, but I also find him entertaining to a degree. Yes sometimes he puts his foot in his mouth, but I enjoy his honesty and I enjoy his insight even if he comes across as somewhat of a know it all. I actually do think he is the most entertaining announcer in golf, Feherty is a good on the course guy, but sometimes his constant banter is a little annoying, always trying too hard to be funny. He is much better than McCord in this manner but my point is no one is perfect.

I just find it funny that every time JM is on the air that 4-5 threads pop up where people are actually getting angry about what he says, nit picking and critiquing every comment he makes and are personally offended by it. Quite frankly it is the controversy like this that keeps him in the booth, if he didnt stir things up a bit then no one would care or notice. I for one find it funny how much love Renton Laidlaw and the other, yaaaaawwwwnnn, boring Euro Tour guys get. I literally fall asleep trying to watch an event. Watching C-Span is more exciting.

JMO.

The question is: Do you tune in to listen to people in the booth, or to watch the best in the world hit golf shots?

10th hole today.

O'Hair teeing off.

JM: 3 wood's a great play, it'll leave him a short short second.

O'Hair hits it in the bunker.

JM: That's a bad club selection, a driver will get you right near the green.

Woods hits driver in the right rough.

That's a bad club choice, he's got a bad angle to the green.

WTF?

a little of both, I mean during the middle of the telecast it can get a little boring without some entertaining commentary, now I do appreciate when they shut their mouths coming down the last hole with the score all tied up like today.

Miller is a good announcer. I especially liked on 15 or 16 where Tiger had to lay up and hit a wedge 95 yards. One of them said 'why is he aiming towards the building'... and he proceeds to hit it to 3 feet. It was funny to hear them laugh about questioning Tiger's shot selection. I'm thankful to be alive to watch this. On another note... Zach Johnson looks ready for the masters, I love how he isn't a boomer but can still keep up.

If nobody is tuning in to listen, just watch, why do they have a booth? Why do they pay Miller big bucks if nobody is supposed to be listening to him? Why not just get a couple of Golf Channel retreads, that would be a lot cheaper.

I don't get the simplistic view that since golf is on, bad announcing is OK. I would agree if this was a high school match on local access but we are talking about NBC. Major newspapers have media critics and Miller is the type of guy those people are writing about. So the topic is OK for a newspaper article but not a golf message board? Makes sense.

I don't particularly hate or love JM. All in all his golf commentary doesn't bother me to the point where I can't watch, but when he strays off topic he pushes the envelop on acceptable commentary. For example today when he was talking about O'Hair not being complete (or something to that respect) until he resolved his issues with his father. I found that to be completely rude. There is no way that JM could know everything that has gone on between O'Hair and his father, therefore its not fair for him to assume he would be any better off if he forgave his father. Just my opinion.

I swear to god that J.M. has never hit a proV1 with a Vokey wedge... every time a player spins a ball on the green he has to comment on THE DAMN BALL SPINNING. Like he's a toddler looking at something shiny - or similar.

I could go and list the multitude of quotes of him commenting on spinning wedge shots, but really, I don't have time.

Golf balls spin, Mr. Miller.

let me add another lame to that. and yeah ...totally agree with the Miller spinning comments. that's super funny you mention that. that was bugging the crap out of me.

NBC is like golf coverage for the stupid.

If it were up to me, Chamblee and Foltz would be calling everything. Now THAT would be coverage!!

I always gave John the benefit of the doubt but today he said some of the stupidest comments I have ever heard... The one that takes the cake was after O' Hair missed a putt... He called the miss a half birdie, what that means I don't know, but if I can put 3.5 on my scorecard tomorrow I'll post about my 63.
