I would have to say that Johnny Miller is probably one of the best commentators on the Tour. He knows everything about the game.

What do you guys think?

I seen many posts here bashing Johnny Miller and haven't posted, but I seen this one and thought I would. I really like Miller, he is not afraid to say the truth and he is very knowledgable about the game and any given course that he is an announcer at. The world needs alot more Johnny Miller's. I better stop here.

I think Johnny is an idiot. Yes, he does have a lot of knowledge in the game... BUT he THINKS he knows more than he does. I saw him talking about grip a few weeks ago and it was the dumbest explanation I have ever heard!

It seems (again... to me) that so many times he gives more credit to a shot than is due, and then speaks definitively about what a player is thinking, or wanted to do, or stuff that there is know way he would know and it drives me nuts!

JMO, but I think we could REALLLLY live without him in the booth!

Can't stand him. Haven't heard him say much that he didn't have to recant immediately afterward. "Telling it like it is" or whatever he does doesn't bother me. It's the fact that he's out of touch and generally wrong most of the time. When the on-course commentator has to correct you at least 2 out of every 3 comments, then there's something wrong. I'm at the point that if NBC is airing golf, I'll either skip the weekend broadcast completely, record it and watch it later and ffw/mute Miller's comments, or just watch it on mute live.

Man, that's a good point, hadn't even thought about that one. He is corrected by the on-course guys and gals a lot!! :russian_roulette:

Couldn't agree more and here's the thing about Miller. There is NO malice or ill intent in what he says. I truly believe he speaks as direct as possible because he believes that's what he owes the fans and the game of golf.

There would be such a thing as too many Johnny Millers but in a game as conservative as golf with a world of announcers afraid to say what *we* on this board would say in our regular foursomes; Miller is refreshing.

I would also argue his knowledge of Golf is among the highest ever.

Sure you can say many negative things about Johnny but what's the point, show me someone who is perfect. Take Tiger for example. I'm a huge fan of Tiger but has that guy ever answered a question directly? I don't fault Tiger for it either because he can't and is very wise not to. This alone increases my appreciation for Miller's willingness to speak his mind and say what all of us sitting on the couch want to hear.

"The last time you see that swing is from a 15 hdcp in the pro-am on Wednesday."
“It's like replacing Bo Derek with Roseanne Barr.”
"This is absolutely the easiest shot to choke on I've ever seen in my life."

Johnny Miller doesn't care what we think of him. Neither does NBC. He's got a contract, and we can either watch him, or vote with our remotes and shut the tv off.

I have grown to like him.

It's strange, I know that he has an intimate knowledge of the game, yet it just seems like he critiques every tiny detail so minutely of others games. It's like, he knows exactly how to perfectly play every shot, which we know no-one does, and if he did, why wasn't he a better player in his own right.

He's not bad. Does he say some stupid things? Yes, but he's better than suck ups like a Rich Lerner. It's pretty interesting to see him calling shots.

hahahahahaha oh my god. I HATE johnny Miller with a burning fiery passion. He is the biggest A**hole ever to sit in an announcers booth. "The guys at the top of the leaderboard arent exactly tiger woods." no s**t! no one is, except tiger himself. He thinks that because the guys at the top of the leaderboard havent won or havent won in a while they are going to drop 5 shots in 8 holes and a wily veteran at even par has a shot still. Nick faldo had it right, cut this guys mic off!

Johnny Miller is, and has been my favorite from day one.
That being said, I don't hold people up to being perfect,
and he isn't, but is closer than the others on golf broadcasts.
And unlike some others, I feel he does know more about the game
than I do.

He knows more about tournament golf than 99% of the people reading these posts (including me  ). I tend to give those guys the benefit of the doubt - my criticism is with the networks and the fact they don't show enough golf shots - too many sidebars, etc...

I think he is great. Does he make a mistake now and then or say something dumb? Of course. There is an awful lot of fill time in golf broadcasts and you can't be spouting gems with every breath. Peter Alliss is my all time favorite but he is a completely different breed than Miller or any of the American commentators.

Johnny throws out alot of useless information. This is his only way of staying in the game. He doesn't wait to slamb anyone who hits a bad shot. In his opinion, he has never hit a bad shot. He is definatley a piece of ----!

He is a bit like Rory S in that he suffers from "Foot in Mouth" disease, but he is not a bad sort, just different, and a was a damn great player

He's the most knowledgeable announcer on tv and the best IMO...its refreshing to hear someone speak his mind and not be afraid to critique players' games. sure a lot of pros hate him for comments he makes on tv about them...most likely because they know hes right most of the time. miller criticized charles howell III about being too mechanical and hard hitting and not having touch in his short game. howell was one of the few pros who admitted johnny was 100% correct and went on to work very hard on that part of his game. does miller make some stupid statements? sure...but id rather hear him speak whats on his mind than listen to announces kiss players' a$$es all day, inflate yardages, and blame a bad lie or gust of wind for every bad shot rather than just admitting it was a bad swing. he's refreshing in my opinion and has a great resume to back his commentary.

I have heard many people say that JM does "inflate" yardages and club selection often though... I think they all do that! 219 yard 7 irons... ya, whatever, maybe 2 - 5 guys on tour can do that... if any... not all of them, geez, do the math, a 219 yard 7 iron would make a 325+ yard drive for those same guys all the time. the math just doesn't add up for most of them...

You got give JM some respect. How many professional tournaments has anyone on this board won? Or US Open's for that matter. I know Jm makes some comments that rub the against the grain, but he's just calling it likes he sees it. He's not trying to come up with a bunch of fluffy Jim Nantz lines, he's just calls it as if he were sitting with his buddies at home watching tv. Now if you really want to make the broadcast more pleasant, PLEASE take the mic away from Gary Koch. Go Johnny go.... :victory:

I really don't care how much Miller has won or knows about the game. Bottom line is he just annoys the h*ll out of me as a commentator. I can't watch golf on NBC without fast forwarding through as much of the commentating as possible.

I find it funny that years ago Paul Azinger slammed Johnny good over comments that he considered too abrasive yet now that Azinger is in the booth he is talking straight from the Johnny Miller school of broadcasting. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

ya, credentials in no way make someone a good commentator or announcer AT ALL! Great teachers aren't always great golfers and great golfers are certainly not always great teachers!!!

He may have had skills and certainly was a good golfer, but that in no way parallels his ability as a commentator. I do think he talks about TONS of pointless stuff, and as I said earlier regarding some of his "here' show you should do it folks at home" stuff, so often it's total rubbish.... again IMO

At least for those of you old enough to remember, he is not like two former CBS announcers that would sit and comment and drink Gin and Vodka and would sometimes slur their words towards the end of the telecast.

What got to me was during the '08 US Open, ever single comment out of his mouth was about his knee, and how he knew better than anyone what tiger was going through. His constant me, me, me, forced me to turn it off and watch online.

Ah....another thread on Johnny. "When I shot 63 at the Open the last round at the Open I hit 18 greens...." "Caught that a bottom groove low didn't he Rodge?" Best quote ever from him though, was a bash on himself basically. Sergio hit a "hook putt" as he likes to refer to Utley's method, and totally yipped a 3 footer, Miller chimes in with "Jeesh that was a terrible putt, looked like one of mine..." (Lol he was an awful putter and he isn't afraid to say it!)

The fact that there is this much opinion on him reinforces that he is a good announcer. Love him or hate him, he is drawing a response from viewers. For the people that don't like him, there is probably 100 guys that will listen waiting for him to iritate them for every 1 guy that puts the telecast on mute. I suspect that if you were given a more benign telecast that it wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable. It's nice to have somebody who will give you something to like or dislike about him. Makes it more interesting.
I personally prefer Faldo. He has a great sense of humor and great insights.

Now waith justh a minuteth...hic...you saysth that like itsth a bad thing...hic!

Seriously, I am 45yoa, cough-cough, and grew up at my dad's feet watching golf on television and while the technology has improved the telecasts technically people are still people. Talking heads are paid to fill air time, hopefully more, but let's face it...Johnny Miller, Gary McCord, Kelly Tilghman, et. al are faces with a productuction team behind them. We all possess some golf knowledge to some degree but a pedigree isn't what golf announcing is all about...maybe the best just are better at it. Highest paid aren't always the best...they just sell and have gotten their shot.

One extremely wise poster mentioned Peter Alliss on this thread...if only he would cross the pond, live forever and call every match...the golf world would be a happier, much more well informed place....J

:black eye: :black eye: First, even for a professional golfer he is not too swift. He is supposed to be a great analyst and most of what he says is just plain wrong. I like sophisticated analysis from smart players. But, bad analysis made by a dope is to much to bear. How he garnered his outsize reputation is a mystery. He cannot speak succinct english, his grammar is fractured and his "analysis' nonsensical. So he's got that going for him, which is nice..... :fool: :fool: :polling: :polling: :WTF: :WTF:

:man_in_love: :man_in_love: And still contribute more, half in the bag, the this MOPE !! Henry Longhurst, Peter Alliss and Ben Wright had a breadth of knowledge, education and experience that Johnny will never have. Johnny couldn't spell "book" if you spotted him two letters. Mope...... :bigwhack: :bigwhack:

There are so many people more knowledgable that they could put up in that booth that would probably be more enjoyable to listen to. I would also have a lot more respect for them. I hate Miller because he speaks like he was a good golfer when he was good, but not a great golfer. Even more he can't even commentate...how many times has he mis-read a putt up in the booth when he has a graph at his disposal on how the putt should break. He could have that equipment from the Golf Channel that shows the correct line and still be wrong by a mile.

Here is a list of better people to put in the booth:
Tom Watson
Lee Trevino
Nick Faldo
Seve Ballesteros
Greg Norman
Raymond Floyd
Hale Irwin
Ben Crenshaw
Curtis Strange

+ 1

Also, I think he makes shots look bad as well, when they are really difficult.

All i have to say is:

"My dad beat Johnny in high school golf match "

Even more he can't even commentate...how many times has he mis-read a putt up in the booth when he has a graph at his disposal on how the putt should break. He could have that equipment from the Golf Channel that shows the correct line and still be wrong by a mile.

Here is a list of better people to put in the booth:
Tom Watson
Lee Trevino
Nick Faldo
Seve Ballesteros
Greg Norman
Raymond Floyd
Hale Irwin
Ben Crenshaw
Curtis Strange

More names that are even better: ( how about not a damn golfer, but someone exciting )

To take one from Robin williams, the guy who announces mexican soccer.

I am sooo sick of some of these announcers, also, these women are completely retarded, and everything they say is from the Teleprompter, now im not trying to be sexist, but seriously, Women shouldn't announce a sport that they dont play in.. put them all over the LPGA, and softball etc.

Names of better announcers:
Adam Sandler
Michael Jordan
Gary Player
John Daly
Sevee Balesteros****
David Duval
Robin Williams
Jim Carey
( That lady on comedy central who does all the roasts )
Anika Sorestam
Eddie Murphy
And SOOO MANY MORE Players and non players
