So I just got done reading John Feinstein's book Tales from Q-School, good book. I figure there's gotta be a couple guys on here that have given it a shot, what's your best Q-school story???

And if you have, how much different was the experience from anything else you've ever played in?

I have a friend/ex-teammate/ex-roommate that is featured in that book. He wrote the wrong score down that ended up costing a guy his tour card. It wasn't his fault, the player is responsible for making sure each hole is correct. I can tell you that he felt pretty bad though.

I played at Q-school once, but I don't have any interesting stories about my play. I did play with Alec Cejka for the first 2 days, he was a real nice guy.

My dad caddied for me at my first professional event- the open qualifier for the Houston Open- and was more nervous than I. On the 18th green, I had a slippery 15 footer above the hole and he was in the classic caddie behind the player pose as we read the putt. I asked him him what he thought regarding the break and he said, loud enough for all to hear, "I think you better not 4-putt." The small gallery laughed and I tapped it down for an easy par.

He caddied again when I went to Q-school for the second time in '96. I am 6'2" and was paired with three other guys for a practice round that were both taller and bigger. On the first tee, my dad says, loud enough for all to hear, "Jeez, doesn't anybody play football anymore?" Loosened us all up again!

Those memories of being with Dad are for more precious than anything I ever accomplished in my professional career!

Not a Q-school moment but when I was taking my PAT for the PGA. I got on the first tee and the other guys all seemed so tense and up tight. I said alright guys 1 mulligan a nine and 2 off the first tee. Everyone laughed, really lightened the mood.

I've been there and played in it, but nothing noteworthy happened. Wish I had an exciting story to share with you. If you have any specific questions on your mind, then post them. You might get some more replies.

i'm only 14, but my dad has made it through q-school many times(long time ago, he's 64). the best story is that he lived in indiana when he was younger, but couldn't afford a trip to Florida for the q-school. he heard that if you buy a peice of land in florida, you get a free trip down. so he bought a dumpy little patch of grass in the middle of nowhere for about $50 (a lot now due to inflation and popularity of FL) and got a free trip. he spent 2 weeks sleeping in the streets and then later qulified for the tour.l

Well how much different was it then anything you've ever played in? What happened, if you don't mind me asking?

I've been. It is tough for a lot of guys due to the $$ plunked down. Second stage gets very tough because you know a top finish gets you some play somewhere no matter what. I dont know how interesting this story is but... I played with a guy who definately felt the pressure. It was the third round of first stage and I was middle of the pack needing a good round to move up. Weather had been bad (wind and rain). Morning of round three the clouds looked horrible and the wind was gusting. Anyway. I played with a guy who was a shot ahead of me so he was in the middle of the pack too. He said something to me about the weather and some other things and I could tell he was freaking out. He went off and made a couple pars and then just imploded. He hit a drive in a lake on the 4th hole or so and I think I witnessed a mental breakdown in real time. He could barely make contact after that. I dont know what happened but he cracked. He went something like , double, double, par, triple, bogey,double. The 10th hole headed away from the club house and parking lot uphill. Pretty easy hole. He drives it down the fairway, knocks it on the green and then hits three putts and still is not in. He bends his putter over his knee and then goes and holes out. The other player and I mentioned he may want to check with someone about having played with a "modified/ altered" club. We werent positive. Standing on the 11th tee in a back up he comes up out of nowhere and says "see ya guys" and disappears, WD, quit. As for me, I was happy to have him gone though he had infected my play quite nicely.

Needless to say I didnt get past 1st stage!
