i saw on tv today, the third round of the buick tournament. camillo marking his ball on the fairway on one of the par five hole not sure what hole number but is one of the par five hole. i am not sure if i saw it right that camillo mark his ball on the fairway with a tee then he return his ball about maybe one foot back where he mark it. what is the ruling on this can you mark and clean your ball in the fairway then return the ball anywhere as long as within one club length (not close to the hole) and not improving the ball lie ?

Thanks

it depends. when the fairways get real wet and soft balls tend to plug.
they may very well do it again tomorrow if they keep getting rain like they have been.
they do it in other tournament when conditions get less than ideal as well.

Usually this is determined before the round starts based on course condition. I played in a tournament last week and the we were allowed to lift and clean.
