Every player on tour owes Arnold Palmer a % of their earnings. without him golf wouldnt be where it is. Tiger would be a Navy Seal and Phill would probably ........ well.

The earlier post saying Arnold Palmer should stay at home, well, that is a great example of the trash that is "the new golfer".

What an absolute idjet.

You're dead on with Arnold. But remember, back in his day, tournaments were "events" at the courses where they were held. No corporate tents, no courtesy cars, and the majority of the players knew where the money was coming from and most ate and drank at "the club" with the members after a round. It was a lot harder to make a living on the tour back then than it is now. Most PGA Tour members had other jobs, many as club pros in the off season or had deals with equipment manufacturers to do outings in the off season, as they had to, other than the superstars of then, they needed to make a living. Mr. Palmer, has never forgotten where he came from, or how he got there, as as much as everyone owes him, he feels he owes the fans too. They don't get much classier than he.

Just a little story about AP to share with the WRX crowd. When I was a pro in South Florida, I worked at PGA National and it was the former home of the Senior PGA Championship prior to the rotation of venues.

After one of his rounds Mr. Palmer walked through the pro shop and out to the valet to get his car. He was immediately swamped as he left, by many of his "Army" looking for an autograph or to talk for a minute. Now anybody who has been to South Florida in the early part of the year after the nice cool winter months roll through has an idea of how hot and humid it gets. Well this day was no different, very hot and very humid. So instead of shunning everyone and leaving because it is too hot and humid, what did Mr. Palmer do???

He told everyone that he would be sure to get to everyone if it was ok he just wanted to sit in his car with the AC on, as he put it "he was not as young as he used to be and the heat would surely get to him". So he sat in his car for the better part of an hour with the window down and the AC running, and he signed every last autograph and spoke to every last person that wanted to speak with him.

One of the more impressive gestures I have seen in my tenure in the world of golf.

Hats off to you Mr. Palmer, you are truely one of a kind and everyone who is involved in this great game owes you a bit of gratitude for all you have done for golf.

Think I heard somewhere that the reason God gave us of a "certain age" bad memories was so we could forget all of the stupid things we said when we were younger.

Palmer is great. IMO you have Nicklaus, Tiger, Vejay, Phil, ect. But there will never be another AP. He truly is one of a kind. I think its the way he looks at you. His spirit is absolutely incridible and it shows through. I have a few great photos that I took at the 01 Sr. Open that I took up close. I'll have to post them today, they are original and one of a kind. When he signed my autograph he was so kind. If you didn't know who he was, he sure didn't act like the Giant he is. My best friend is a huge golf nut and has an awesome home office, with one pic on the wall. Its an old black and white photo of Palmer, its great. He is from PA and he tells the story how his mother wrote a letter to palmer back in the 70s and about 6 months later recieved an autographed photo in the mail. He and Jack are the best IMO.

One thing that I wish people would do is remember that Heroes aren't perfect, they are just better than everybody else. The things that guys like Arnold Palmer,Richard Petty,Pele,Michael Jordan,Babe Ruth and a few select others did was to change/improve the game to a point where it was more commercially acceptable.Every person I mentioned has flaws but each truly brought their sport to the masses. Without them we wouldn't have the highly compensated athlete's in there respective sports that we have today. With the exception of Jordan most of the guys I listed are not the best players ever in their sports, but they all were the best for their sports. IMO Todd
